When You Are Old - W. B. Yeats read by Cillian Murphy | Powerful Life Poetry
Video Overview & Insights
Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another heart whispers back. Those who wish to sing always find a song. At the touch of a lover, everyone becomes a poet. - Plato

When You Are Old by WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
Getting old is a new experience for those of us who have, suddenly, come to this realization. It is beyond words.
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
This calls to mind my grandmother Catherine. She came to America from Ireland on a cattle boat at 16 years old. What courage!!! 💜💜💜
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
I tell people surprised by my interest and capabilities in a few things, Hey, I'm old, I'm not dead!
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
Being invisible when you're old is how it should be. Our time is passing just as our elders left and it was ours for a time. We are moving off the stage, our turn is almost over. Nothing wrong with that. I was a bit tired of being focused on, this is peaceful.
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Age is pain.
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
My mother is 84 year old this June , 🥹 thank you for this poem 🥹
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

I don't know about anybody else but that illuminated penis looking to the heavens at the end of the poem threw a monkey wrench into the mood.
@Spencer151There may be snow on the roof but there's a fire in the grate... dont let it go out.
@annmcevoy5686Lose the music
@chloejane8858That is why it is better to die before you get old. Who the fuck wants to be old??
@MichaelaMiller-e7sI now really feel my age....A beautiful poem.....Well read. MRS. Rosa Larsen....wife of Peter in photo, left...He is also my age...(both 87....married 62 years!!)
@peterlarsen1000Read beautifully.
@AbbieHoffmansGhostone of the all time greatest poems...
@bruceg1845Everyone knows what it's like to be young, we've all done that, but age-ing is something you can't understand until you are old.
@cz2045-o8mWonderful poem, beautifully presented. Many thanks . . . ❤❤
@Windy888CityWhat a beautiful voice and read beautifully.
@natbaxter3717AI SLOP?
@xxbatflowerxxIronically, I find the videos of celebrities first old & then young remarkably moving! It’s easy to see an older person and never think about them when they were young.
It’s becoming all too frequent that younger people mock the older of us. “Oh, how we mock that which we are to be”! Everyone do your best to produce a “race well run”.
Very nice. Murphy should play Jarod Kushner in a Trump family TV series.
@davidmayhew8083I wonder who really lives a pilgrim soul?
@Silvergirl42275 now... lawrd knows I'm surprised. Have a cohort of crimes/hormones of our youth. She's 81 this year. We laugh and feel blessed we can still remember times of hormones.
@greylance473Just can't get enough of that man's beautiful voice and that lovely poem.
@Deb-o5bNice, but the music was loud and unnecessary and drowned out the voice of Cillian.
@erinundraNope, that did nothing for me, being a wrinkley and all!
@bobgrassfield909It's like I'm from the last century, which I am.
@MarionAndMeIt is in stillness that we can admire the underlying beauty of change.
@juan7836The Bible says growing old teaches compassion. I can see that now. I'll be 68 in a few weeks and am a widow now. Try if you can to enjoy each day. Don't worry about the world or what others do or don't see or understand. If they are fortunate they will live long enough to understand too. Go in peace strongly.
@Imkinda-z3sReading and listening to poetry recited in dulcet tones needs to become a thing again
@mayaperez6967That was lovely. Cillian Murphy can read to me anytime.
@Kokum11I cant stand my wife😀
@patrickmurray4771I wasn't depressed before I heard this! I am 78 and feel and look much younger, but I realize I am in a race against Father Time!
@Paul-lm5gvThat, ladies and gentlemen, is the most exquisite reading you will hear. Ever.
@carmendesireeponti67Hmmm

@davidgreen6981My mother used to say that old age is ok, it's all it's friends it brings along with it,so true😂
@Carol-y3k2zI am old and very clever.❤
@Auntie_SherrySo beautiful! Thank you 🙏💖
@PhilosophicalScorpioTo love is not the highest or grandest of life’s gifts but rather to be loved. You can love and not be loved and still suffer the pains of sorrows deep in your soul but to be loved is the highest gift life can give both in this fallen world and in the world to come. Human love received is the second greatest blessing only eclipsed by the love of a savior who is God. This love is the highest greatest blessing in the universe. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift of love.
@Southernman469How charming is to read a poet hurt by an unrequited love. Now an old man I appreciate the most how to get rid of a failed love. I love the way Yeats cures himself of that love that didn't prosper; it's that last farewell stanza, leaning over an imaginary railing to murmur, not without pain, that his love faded away.
@rtv423Love this deeply ❤
@victoriagiardinieri1904Wonderful except for the background din of superfluous music.
@patrickdavies5185this music is unnecessary, drags down the entire thing.
