The only thing I would say about this is definitely sit across from the person on the first date. Especially if you met over text and haven’t seen them face-to-face before. If you sit next to them, for one you’re gonna have to constantly turn your head to talk otherwise you’re gonna both be talking faceing the same direction. so have fun getting a neck cramp. You’ll also have to stop eating to turn and talk to them which can be a disadvantage because if you go out to eat for the first day, the food is actually a good thing to keep you busy while theres “awkward silence” listening to the other person. Secondly while yes, sitting next to them offers physical contact, which can enhance the date or attraction. It can also very much make it more awkward if they don’t want to be physically touched that soon or are not comfortable being that close to you right away. Just overall it’s more awkward and unnatural and can be weird. Sitting across also lets you analyze their facial expressions, where their eyes are(often in the distance or on you), good eye to eye contact conversations, etc.

That’s your real first date.
