What No One Tells You About Studying International Relations

Video Overview & Insights

Is an International Relations degree worth it in 2025? In this video, I break down what International Relations really is, what you actually study, the pros and cons of this degree, and most importantly — the career paths you can take after graduation.

I am in Germany and I do want to go for my masters in IR but should I focus myself on a certain place like the UAE. Tbh I am more interested in the UAE, Japan and countries near Turkey. (I do want to study there)

— @Liv-ie4xl

I’ll share my personal journey: from studying IR in Kazakhstan, to working at the UN (UNICEF), and now building a career in Germany. If you’re considering International Relations, International Affairs, or Global Studies, this honest review will help you decide if it’s the right path for you.

Quick info about me:

Symbat, 26, from Central Asia (Kazakhstan), currently living in Berlin.

Helloooo, I want to move to Kazakhstan! My roommate is from Tajikistan and she's planning to move and become a teacher in kazakhstan. Do you know any other good majors I could study to get a decent job in Kazakhstan? Im majoring in film, but I wanted to double major in something else, because I'm not sure how hard it would be to get into film in Kazakhstan.

— @Russian_raccoonn

I studied international relations and work in the communications sphere.

I have a blog for the russian-speaking community with over 70K followers across platforms.

I completed my BA in International Relations and then applied for a Master’s, that’s when things started to go downhill. I think I was already burned out, but I also believed that getting a Master’s was necessary to land a good job. Around that time, I also developed a strong interest in video editing, which eventually turned into my full-time job.
Even though I don’t regret studying IR, it definitely helped me see the world from a broader perspective. I don’t think I would choose it again if I had the chance. I’ve gone through several interviews, and like you mentioned, it’s difficult to demonstrate your value when your “hard skills” aren’t very specialized. Being analytical, for example, is often seen as a soft skill now. Especially in the private sector, employers tend to look for skills that directly generate revenue. As for the public sector, at least where I live, getting a job there is extremely competitive and difficult. Sometimes I wish I had studied English literature at least then I could confidently say, “I’m an English teacher,” instead of hesitating when someone asks, “So what are you going to do after graduation?”
I’m not trying to discourage anyone haha I know plenty of people who have succeeded in IR. But I think it’s just as important to hear from those who struggled, so you can make a more informed decision.

@motivation3599
@

Hi! If I i want to become a diplomat or smth in international relations it would be better to have a degree in international law? I mean you can take the law path or the second one and maybe complete a master degree in international if you have gaps. Would you think if that would make you more seen or reliable? But I know that this would be more hard and i really like history and seek for learning languages. What do you think?

I came in scared and left feeling overqualified.

Guess we study differently over here. Because in every field there is history of course you also study history, now depends from which perspective otherwise you'd just go to a University with History profile.

I’m currently interested in studying this degree but I wonder if I will succeed? I have a tattoo on my hand and other tattoos on my arms.

I do have piercings but they’re piercings I don’t mind taking out.

I mean, I’ll get a removal on my hand tat if I have to as I don’t care for it but I’m just curious if I have to go to this extreme lengths yet.

I don’t see myself working in the super high side of things. I would like to do more non profit based work. But in case I do decide to do so

I'm into minds whether to pursue in Medicine or political science and international relations. Why medicine is, my parents burning desire of seeing me doctor and the good financial profit. And why political science and international relations is, my interest and some skills. Can someone who graduated in IR earn more than physician do?
