What New Army Cadets Go Through During The First Six Weeks At West Point | Boot Camp
Video Overview & Insights
Before starting the academic year, incoming freshmen at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, must participate in a six-week basic training program that teaches military skills like rifle marksmanship, rappelling, navigation, and properly donning protective gear like gas masks.
At the end of training, cadets compete in "The Crucible," a high-intensity final test that cadets must complete before marching 12 miles back to the main West Point campus, where they will begin their academic year. Insider followed these new cadets throughout the summer to see what all they learn before beginning their school year at the prestigious military academy.

@BlakeMendenallI went through Basic Cadet Training at the Air Force Academy, ultimately deciding I didn't want to commit so I left for University of Chicago. The cadet training was a joke in my opinion. I did ultimately enlist in the Army Reserves to help pay for college but I distinctly remember my Air Force BCT and found it to be laughable. Especially when I compared it to my Army Basic Training. That's not to say that AF BCT didn't have any challenges, it did, but the overall mission for Air Force compared to Army are vastly different. The physical training and military culture are very unique to each service branch. The Army was precisely what I was expecting. Air Force was basically some light PT with some military ceremonies and discipline.
@justinmcnally5395Did this in the vision quest program in the 80's. 50 ft. 😅
@MyOhmy-e8oI know most may not know it, but at one point asbestos was good for the lungs
@jjdelany8130Having gone through rappel training that is a tough thing to do. You need to make yourself almost horizontal to the ground and trust your belayer. It is not a human reaction to do that. You are doing something that every instinct in your brain says not to do. But it's the way it has to be done. Otherwise you stumble on the rocks and cannot "kick out." And then it takes too long and you could be an easy target.
@cassidykerouac4126I attend USMAPs, and I remember watching this in 10th grade. Now, I just noticed that my colonel and cadet CSM is in this video. Crazy
@rudrudolph6971forgot the best part.....HANDGRENADES!

Yikes - what happens when the enemy is sitting in the shadows - SMH
Even though my LT came from west point she couldnt demonstrate to disassemble a M4
@mantonchannel6321promotions unwanted why Lebanon
@darenstpierre715An, your math is a bit off. 120,000 applications, 10% get in. Class size is about 1200, so that would be 1%. Typical Army. Go Navy!
@davidwenner8537Damn that’s a fancy lad school if I saw one
@RazzlyCrunchThe rapelling at the beginning of the video can't possibly be the most difficult thing West Point cadets do. In Canada, we did this weekly as Air Cadets at 13 years old.
@mainecooncharlie3409haha west point is bootcamp once you're ass gets there. if your cross eye dominate going into this shit without knowing that you are going to get smoked on rifles if you dont realize it and make adjustments.
@sfctayThe comments here are hilarious - potential officers? Noooooo… 2 years later and it’s still ridiculous.
@flyingfree3422Camp for adults pretty much
@cPdubs-f9jSucks I wasn’t able to attend, dreamed of it as a kid
@ovidiusnaso70:35 if 120,000 apply and 10% get in, then the class size would be 12,000. Considering the fact each class is a bit over 1000, I think Business Insider played their numbers a bit fast and loose.
@thegreatbambino3358I'm from just south of west point, my grandfather ( a WWII veteran) worked there as a maintenance guy. Don't know what he did exactly, my mom has told me stories of watching the cadets on graduation day and my grandfather pointing out which ones would pass out because of the heat. She always smiles when she tells me
@natecanale78892:12 "Make sure you put it on safe and take your finger off the trigger next time...alright.".....West Point should get Drill Sergeants lmao
