What Makes This Oil So Special?

Video Overview & Insights

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is chemically different from Pennzoil Platinum. So what makes it so special? Going beyond the elemental analysis, Certified Lubrication Specialist Lake Speed Jr reveals what sets Pennzoil Ultra Platinum apart from Pennzoil Platinum and other conventional oils.

Great Info. I have been using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for years.

Who is the @themotoroilgeek ? I'm a Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers Certified Lubrication Specialist and Oil Monitoring Analyst (I've maintained both of those for over a decade). I also worked for Joe Gibbs Racing for 12 years as their lubricant specialist. During that time, we worked with Wix Filters (one of our sponsors) to test and develop filters for our race engines. We also worked with Lubrizol and Chevron-Phillips Chemical to test and develop oils for our race cars. Following that, I was the head of R&D for Driven Racing Oil. During that time, I formulated and tested over 50 products. We also worked with Cummins, Comp Cams, Oak Ridge National Labs and General Motors on various R&D products. Those efforts are recorded in peer reviewed white papers published by SAE International and ACS Sustainable Chemistry journals.

I’m a NASA astronaut/engineer/janitor. I spray Pam cooking spray in my regular oil. Don’t tell anyone !!!

PENNZOIL Ultra Platinum is my next oil change for my 2019 MAZDA CX-5 AWD 2.5 L. turbo. And I'll keep using Ultra Platinum.

Going to use PUP 5w-30 going forward on my BMW B58. It's not spec (unlike regular Platinum Euro, I'm out of warranty range anyways) but I'm convinced Ultra is a lot superior.

Vs. Castrol Edge? !!!!

@michaelferrell5448

Nope. Mobil 1 synthetic is the best. Has been around decades and I know from experience it will go 10-15k between changes with no oil issues. Have 500k on same engine and never an issue. Doesn't use any oil and runs like new still. There's lab tests and then there's experience. The racing world doesn't use Penzoil they use Mobil 1. People here are trying to sell you an idea.

I wish they put the numbers by the handle, coz i use 0w16, 0w20, 5w20 and 10w40 for the toys, and i use penzzoil on all of them. I have 7 bottles of 5 quarts in my cabinet.

Isnt this using Shell's PurePlus Technology?

I always ran mobile full synthetic from day 1. Tried the Penz for 1 oil change and it started burning oil. Went back to mobile burns no oil. 205k miles JKU.

you already know valvoline restore and protect is the best............by far

Many years ago Penzoil was the oil that would almost guarantee to sludge up your engine. Glad to see things have changes and it seems to be a pretty good oil now I hear.

Although Pennzoil claims that they make this in 10W-30, good luck finding it anywhere.

I got my oil analysis back on my two Toyota hybrids. My Venza was running Pennzoil Platinum 0w-16 and my Prius was running Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-20. They don't make an Ultra Platinum in 0w-16 but what I find interesting is my Analysis for both are almost identical. Both higher oxidation, basically the same additive package. The 0w-16 had more Boron and less Calcium. I think their 0w-16 Platinum is formulated like an Ultra Platinum. They have a 0w-16 Platinum Hybrid that is more similar to a regular platinum with low oxidation and no Boron.

Hey, I just purchased 5 jugs of Ultra Platinum 0w20 and they no longer say: Made with natural gas, I am wondering if it's still the same! I trust you judgement and I wonder what you think about this change. Does it need to be tested again? Lets re-test this oil!!!

All Pennzoil is garbage oil.

Mobil 1 high performance or Royal Purple hands down better than any garbage Pennzoil.

Better power band, better fuel economy, engine runs smoother, better, and longer.

I have tried Pennzoil and all these other supposed better oils. Real world they dont stack up.

@bradschoenwald3467

This is no longer a GTL oil, just lost that specification in 2026, new labeling with NO GTL .

Lake, do you see any performance/wear differences between parafin and asphalt based oils??

What's the latest recommendations on new engine break in? Bought a 2025 F150 2.7l eco boost in the fall. Ford dealer did first oil change at 1491 miles, Motorcraft 5W30 syn blend and Motorcraft filter. Now have 3050 miles, and I will change oil again. Do I use the syn blend again to help with seating the rings or go to full synthetic now? On third oil change I will be running Pennzoil Ultra Plat.

@gadgethunter5732

I used to use this or Mobil 1, but now I can get Liqui Moly for $30CAD a jug, so I use that. Whichever premium oil is cheapest, use that

Too bad you won’t be able to get your hands on the real deal product shortly as the Pearl Plant in Qatar has been significantly damaged. 😢

To me ,Ultra doesn't meet the MS-6395 Chrysler Requirement. I think that's a pretty big deal.

I run mobil in everything I own. One of my cars 05 infiniti G35 3.5 revup I ran the ultra platinum from others UOA results on these motors. The G35 is not my daily and sits for a month or two without driving. With less than 300 miles on this oil I started it up and heard the most God awful grinding I've ever heard. Immediately turned the car off and drained the oil, mobil back in it and never heard that sound again. Probably great oil for daily vehicles but for vehicles that sit for awhile it's horrible. I have other vehicles that sit for way longer without starting with mobil in it and never have a hard start like the infiniti with ultra platinum. Could it be the natural gas ultra platinum doesn't have a good lasting film and drains too much and this contributed to the grinding at startup before the oil pump could get oil the the mechanicals? For this reason I've never went back to pennzoil products at all. That would be a good test for this oil to see how much residual stays on the internals over time.

@SWAYST

If I remember correctly, Pennzoil Platinum performed better than Pennzoil Ultra Platinum on Project Farm's testing. But maybe my memory is failing. I'm not saying that would prove anything, if it's true.

@jedward5155
@

Can you do your tests where you run the platinum and compare wear indicators to the others? Wouldn't that be the definitive test of the hype?

@frankenstake

Hey Lake, would the Ultra P be better for a brand new gas vehicle with a turbo or should I just use the Platinum ?

What are your thoughts on Ultra Platinum 0W-40 for a 2015 VA WRX with direct injection when it comes to the calcium levels being "high" when it comes to LSPI risk? Stick with Motul? Car has intake and cutback, with Accesport and tuned. Thanks.

Glad I stumbled across your page. I was in a sunday school class with your dad, never been a race fan and didn’t know what a legend he was for a couple months. I was a techy oil analysis guy du to my work. What you do its techy oil stuff, well and good but you miss the vast majority by not real world relating. Real world is not a flat tappet NASCAR engine. Its not a hot rode Poche . We go to NASCAR in a Forester, Ford Twin Turbo 4, A Nissan, a Mazda, a Toyota 4 runner. those are the real world engines. A bit off oddball would the the Boxer Subaru boxer engine (maybe),. Lets see a V6 non Turbo and a VB-6 Tubo. You don't want to use a poor oil but do you need Top Penzoiil for a non turbo engine and what climate (Minnesota vs Arizona)
So, you get to show off your Triblogistg creds, and leave behind how it applies in the real world most of us live in. Its a totally disservice. Right now what I what to know, what is the besot oil for mu Forester? It appears Pennzoil Ultimate Platinum is the best, But that is using 5 different sources not the Motor Oil Geek.
If I never see your flat tapped V-8, it will be too soon. Get me tests for a Ford Eco 4 Twin Turbo. I can talk to my brother on that one. The old 91 F-250 is covered, Mobile 1, because tis old school and it was proven in the day. Passat Diesel: Go with the bottle that as 5050-01 on it.
Of them all the Passat is unique in not just being a diesel, a diesel with Unit Injectors that were stuffed in (narrow) where no unit injector was intended to go. Narrow lobes. Needs an EP oil Not all oils have it, so VW has a sub set of 505 01 it better have it or there gos our lobe.

I remember when Pennzoil came out with what they called ball bearing technology. I put it in my wife's car motor had always been clean and never used oil. I switched because I used Kendall since it was new but it was getting hard to find it. After switching to Pennzoil the tarnish built up and for the first time it started using some oil. After that I swore I'd never buy it again. I use Valvoline now I'm satisfied..
May God bless everyone 🙏
