Step 1: Toxic dose (cyanide)


For many animals, a dangerous dose of cyanide is roughly:

👉 So a rough lethal range:

~3–10 mg cyanide for a chicken


Step 2: Cyanide in apple seeds

Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide:

About 0.5 mg cyanide per gram of crushed seeds (very approximate)
One apple seed ≈ 0.05 g

👉 So per seed:

~0.02–0.03 mg cyanide (if fully crushed and digested)


Step 3: Back-of-the-envelope estimate

To reach ~5 mg cyanide:

5 mg ÷ 0.025 mg per seed ≈ 200 crushed seeds
What that means in practice
1–10 seeds: completely negligible
20–50 seeds (crushed): still unlikely to cause serious harm
100+ crushed seeds: getting into potentially dangerous territory
200+ crushed seeds: plausible lethal dose


Important caveats

Chickens often don’t crush seeds well, reducing risk

Not all cyanide is released/absorbed
Individual sensitivity varies
Smaller or young chickens are more vulnerable

My coworker asked me if I ate chicken in front of my chickens, the look on his face when I told him no because they will try to eat it. He didn't know chickens would peck another to death if it had an open wound and would eat it if given the chance.

Hot take. Vegetables aren't real. "Vegetable" is just a semantic classification of how food is served. All flowering plants produce a fruit. The fruit may not always be sweet (or edible for that matter) but generally if it makes a flower, it makes a fruit.

We cut the flight feathers short on one wing so they can not fly far .
The tree had most of the lower branches cleared of any vertical off shoots and the chickens roosted in that tree , keeping the ground under it weed free and ate all of the windfall fruit .
Now from memory the tree was planted in 1840 and the tree + the chickens were still there in 2010 when the property was sold .
Same story with apples , they got all of the windfall & rotten apples .
Just because there is cyanide in a seed does not mean that it will kill the birds.
A lot of plants also have arsenic in the roots and oxalates in the leaves but again either it does not affect the chooks or they just won't eat it .

Been rubbing on my chicken all day 🤔

Quite the opposite ive found with giving them back their eggs. My OG flock got raw scrambled eggs & would break open & consume freshly laid eggs. Once i started smashing them into their serving dish (crunching the shells up too) in front of them, they stopped eating them after laying them.

“Give me a minute, you got more coming” lol yeah right. The panic for treats is incredible and stressful 😂

If it's something that grows from flowers and contains seeds those are fruits....
Yes beans,green peas, avocados, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash etc ...
The others which grew from Roots stems, ..

You know you can make a soldier fly breeder that will feed you chickens. I never made one myself but some guy made one and it worked really well.
