What it's like to live with adult ADHD | Britain and Me
Video Overview & Insights
“I’d never had hope for the future before,” says Kathleen, who was diagnosed with ADHD aged 30.
Being nearly 50 today, I was born in a time when they new very little about ADHD. They just saw me as a naughty boy and segregated me from my peers. It wasn't until I was a teenager and starting to use Speed as part of the club life that I got an insight into how fast and "mutli-everything" my brain usually ran at as the stimulant brought me down to a place wherein I could think calmly, with one voice. The total opposite of what the stimulant is supposed to do !
To my joy, I actually outgrew the hyper side of the condition but I still have massive issues with activating myself and brain fog due to lack of dopamine.
This issue is compounded by the fact all my family couldn't handle me so I have been on my own since I was 13 years old.
I really struggle with getting up and doing anything for myself - if that makes sense? If I'm doing it for someone else - no problem but not for me. From brushing my teeth to cleaning my home to my tax returns as a sole trader in the UK as Maths is not my strong point and Although I try my best, I live in fear that the tax man is one day going to jump upon me from a great hight, not because I'm trying to with intent defraud the HMRC but because of the way my brain works and how I'm going to prove to him that I'm not deliberately trying to defraud the government.
It doesn't help that along with ADHD, the conditions closest friends are depression and Low self esteem so no matter what I achieve, it's never good enough.
Being alone makes it very hard, as I have no one to talk too and those I can speak too don't understand about ADHD nor can anyone offer any advice or give me a pill with will just fix this problem I have and make it go away.
I think about ticketing out quite a lot but have not decided a way to doing it, a time or date. No I don't want to die, I just want the stress, the inability to function correctly, my incredibly forgetful mind and EVERYTHING ELSE - to just go away.
If I've up set anyone by reading this, I do apologies as that was not my intent.
Having no one to talk to who gets me, sometimes, it just bursts out of me.
In the past, they suffered from suicidal thoughts, but things changed after diagnosis.
She wouldn't cure ADHD? Lmao, this woman has no clue. ADHD is hell
“It can save a life," Kathleen says.
It took 8 years to get a diagnosis and now I'm in the 25th month of a 6 month wait for the medication. Thanks NHS.
It’s thought that around 3- 4% of adults in the UK have ADHD: That's 1.9 million people.
I'm in total agreement with the guy's thoughts at 6:45. I, too, would absolutely & immediately snap BOTH my fingers to get rid of my ADHD. My childhood, teen years, and adult life with ADHD has been a constant uphill battle physically, mentally (obviously), and emotionally. I look back, and it's no wonder people with ADHD are suicidal or have committed suicide because normal people have no idea how incredibly difficult life is with it
But what is ADHD and why is the condition widely misunderstood?
man i think one of the most underrated things that is despairing is when one of them said that they actually planend for the future now. i have always lived with this impending sense of no ambition, no dreams, and this gnawing sense that it just wont work out??? idk its not fatalistic but its just like i dont have hobbies??? and i feeel like i never will
Anyone feeling emotionally distressed or suicidal can call Samaritans for help on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org in the UK. In the US, call the Samaritans branch in your area or 1 (800) 273-TALK.

I just got a diagnosis at 46. I had to do it privately because in my area, GPs refuse to refer adults for assessment. That's cost me £300 just for the assessment, and I'm going to have to pay around £200 a month for medication if I actually want to do anything about it beyond having an official diagnosis. My boss's first response when I told him is "I think everybody's a little bit ADHD" as if I'm just throwing away that money out of boredom or an excuse for my laziness.

Diagnosed with adhd and autism and I think adhd causes me more problems in my everyday life. Like it's impacting me 24 hours a day. Whereas autism causes issues less frequently over a typical day. If i had the option to cure 1 for me personally I'd definitely pick adhd.

I came close to being very successful 20 years of my own business worked for numerous big corporations since in the same type of work and I’ve never seen less than four people do the job I I thought I had to do, but it’s like I always say when I have too much to do is when I’m at my best
@shaynemcmillan8315I was diagnosed this year, I'm 59, I'm sure I have AuDHD, now I realise why I was 'weird' all my life, I was misdiagnosed and given Seroxat which is an SSRI anti depressant for 34yrs now, I had adhd all the time, Ive been addicted to english teas for 40yrs, now I know why seeing as nothing motivates me, and realise why behind me there is a queue of messed up releationships, disastwer business ventures, |i failed atr everything, even a marriage, it all starts out well as I have motivation but then motivation goes and fail
@gerofiore9695impossible to get diagnosed with is what it is
@glockwraithADHD is a disability in some form. Why do we have to pretend it's a "different" way to be? The brains dopamine is less good than a normal person's dopamine. It's not a different hair colour.
@mrbrightside-l4bWatching because everyone tells me I’ve got all the ADHD symptoms. I personally wouldn’t use the medication, I struggle with self control in stimulants and abused them in the past. Some low thc cannabis strains have helped, cbd, cbdv and thcv all have more positive effects but as I can’t legally grow these plants, it’s a struggle.
@tuckerluke80I was diagnosed late, and I never realized how much easier it is for other people to exist, or how hard I struggle. But I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and a lot of my issues were overlooked because I was a girl that got good grades. I'm so glad that people are taking it seriously now. All the women on my mother's side of the family have ADHD.
@marbsnoif i could snap my fingers a cure adhd i would give it back. its ruined my life.
@purecrazyanimal2461It is soooo refreshing to hear people with ADHD really emphasize how difficult it is. I was diagnosed at 32 years old, just over a year ago, and I still don't have a good grasp on my functionality as an adult the way I'd like to.
@shelbyplace8635Long video
@ÁlvaroMartins-x4l"We need to change the environment, not the people"
Words to carve in stone. 😢
Adhd is basically me adding this video to Watch Later and never actually watching it because I forgot I had
@serk.officialFascinating and enlightening. “Damn it’s been hard getting to where I am now”says the man. How true. But, understanding the hard wired brain I find immensely helpful. Best wishes to these three oh-so-likeable, brave and honest people for speaking out to help others, like me.
@timallen6025I disagree so much with people that say that it is not something that has to be cured. For me it is. It is debilitating, it's ruining my relationships, job, personal productivity, it has an overwhelming negative impact on my life. Sure, I'm passionate, sure I'm creative. But it does not erase the fact that my life is a complete mess and I'm barely managing it, always stressed out if my brain will be able to handle another task, cooperate with me or when will I be overstimulated. ADHD is not a superpower !
@lenaardie4555How does an adult get diagnosed in the UK?
@wadecason227Must be nice to have access to healthcare
@zzerxesI zoned out and forgot to skip the ad
@AntonioEvans-l8mI'm 56 and have daughters 26 and 28...we are waiting to see someone, as we took the test on line, we have been told it can take 12 months to 18 months for an appointment. Shocking 😢 to have to wait that long.
@mariemoss2475Im going through this right now & seeking specialists help
@javiismael1480I am 40 years old and I wish I had been diagnosed with ADHD 20 years ago, it's been very hard now even thinking of the past makes me feel like I don't want to live anymore!! 😭😭
@PremWorld5I have the "Inattentive" version of ADHD which affects my ability to concentrate and to study, I'm too easily distracted by things which don't matter, It's why I've never really got anywhere in life, I want it "cured" I want it gone but I don't want to take drugs which wear off eventually anyway, So what's the solution?
@ricchardo6:33 …Girl bffr . On the other hand, i agree with the man after her much more, he explained it perfectly.
@tunamayo2823I was diagnosed at 11 I’m 33 now and I’ve never had a job I would love one but I just can’t I don’t why 🤷🏻♂️🤕
@joshgreen-y9xIt's funny how many people are dismissing ADHD down here, they just want someone they can insult, best thing about sky news is going through the comments and seeing all the angry conservative types getting jealous that we have a bona fide reason for our issues with productivity and focus. Playing devils advocate though it shouldn't be an excuse to avoid personal growth and improvement, Medication shouldn't be the primary treatment, teaching coping strategies and routines should be paramount. However saying it doesn't exist and we're just snowflakes as many comments have stated is an extremely self centered and unintelligent point of view.
@schlogmanThis is a very nicely-presented and considered article. I'm a northern, middle-aged (arguably formerly) working class man recently diagnosed with ADHD. The thought hadn't crossed my mind until a couple of years ago! Post diagnosis, everything makes sense! The persisting stereotypes are real and I shudder to think what responses I'd get from the blokey-blokes in the local Wetherspoons if I told them. I generally keep it to myself, unless the person I'm talking to is patently ADHD as f@*k! 🤣
@ainsleystonesSick to death of hearing people whinge about supposedly having ADHD. The gov needs to wake up before this nonsense ruins the NHS.
@thesiluresscribe567Over diagnosed. Stay off social media.
@dianekettles1923Trying one of my sons ADHD tablets let me understand how my brain is supposed to work .
@NaeMuckleWhy does sky news always try and scare people. The words they use 🤔
@VibzhouseADHD is a never-ending war with yourself! We go to bed defeated every day and wake up ready for a new round of a war
@bakhodirjonkakhkharov344'ADHD' is not, and should not be classed as a disorder. There are disorders that 'ADHD' makes someone more susceptible to, but it itself is a way of processing that is simply different to the norm and struggles to adapt to current social expectations.
@CLANK...6:57 I feel it in your voice my man, I’m sorry your journey has been so rough. Love from one adhd guy to another.
@rustyshackleford6149While ADHD is not as severe as other disorders, it is that fact that makes it difficult to live with because it's dismissed and no one it seriously.
@TheKamrenBI'd happily be a guinea pig if there was a cure for ADHD.... I'd also snap my fingers in a second to be rid of my neuro diversity .... It ruined my life, long before it really started...😢😢
@zadekeys2194ADHD is a nightmare that I wouldn't wish upon anyone.....
@zadekeys2194It ruined my life, at 60 I cannot get anything back.
@JimmydawhiteI'm waiting for my assessment, finding out about ADHD at 36 explained why I always felt miserable. It takes ages...
@abelhanino69My scare is if i take medication will it take my personality away? Like change me. I want the struggle to stop but not the creativity if anyone gets me
@lesleybell7842so I opened this video, watched it for 3 min
forgot about it, then wondered off
2 weeks later, I think, I've come across the tab opened with it, still at 3 min
I think that should say something, right?
Look it make me mad when everyone thinks they have adhd then go to the pharmacy and there backorders. People with severe ADHD /and Minor autistic without my meds im ruined helps filter what i say. Honestly they have a minor case of ADHD from what i see
