What is the BEST AI English Pronunciation Feedback Tool? Elsa Speak vs Google's Pronunciation Tool

Video Overview & Insights

At least for me, "phonetic spellings" that only make sense for native English speakers have only added a layer of confusion. IPA vowel symbols make a lot more sense for a native Spanish speaker.

Take your free English test:

We could say there are at least five dimensions to pronunciation, of which individual sounds and fluency are two. Sounds are at the word level. Currency here would be the rate of words over time at the sentence level. Sentence stress and intonation are arguably just as important in conveying meaning of communicating. So this is still quite partial, when this video was made anyway.
But a natural sentence is quite a lot more nuanced than those two considerations.

Very interesting, but google’s pronunciation practice feature is not appearing in Italy. I guess it is not yet rolled out in my region. I think BoldVoice is the most advanced app out of all but it has only American English, no British English and no any other languages

I think Google doesn't do whole sentences because then it would need to give feedback on stress patterns and weak forms, because unstressed words sound different in a sentence. Tools like Elsa fail at doing that, so I think it's a good thing that Google avoided something that could turn out inaccurate.

Something else that's useful to know is that many apps that have pronunciation feedback are all using the same Microsoft Azure tool to process the feedback. So they look like different apps, with different wrappers, but they're all using the same pronunciation feedback tech underneath.

I cant not see the control for save my voice in Google pronunciation tool

elsa has a tool on their app where you can put your own customized sentence and it's really good, although it doesn't like some linking sounds

I am a native Japanese speaker, so I have difficulty pronouncing "squirrel," especially the "ur" sound, which does not exist in Japanese. The Google Pronunciation Tool gives me incorrect advice. It suggests words that contain the "ur" sound, such as "summer, investor, and color," which include "uh" instead of "ur." I have been practicing every day for months, but I cannot pronounce "squirrel" correctly every time.

Google neve give me a good feedback, I spend 1h speak with it and always it show me some "tips". So I acess Cambridge Dictionary website and play the same word and Google says Great Job!

Elsa is more smart and "human" tha Google, in my opinion.

I find Elsa's app so ugly and confusing. 😒

Is it only American English or you can practise British English too?

Google is the winner because it is free and works very well

For me, the best is Elsa Speak for the simple fact of using the IPA, which gives it a huge advantage

I was able to recreate google’s pronunciation system for my app. My plan is to expand it for sentences.

You can practice full sentences with Google Assistant by saying, "English Practice."

Why the Practice Button is not available in my version? Anyone in the same page?

Elsa works pretty good for that. I have the Premium elsa for over one year, now. Works pretty good but the problem is that the activities are not "infinite" within the appπŸ˜…. Google speaking practice is not available worldwide yet. Elsa is not so good for real time feedback in conversation (as it only has a final report) but the speech analizer is worth the money

Great comparison video! Just to contribute with my two cents, within the ELSA app there's a feature called "dictionary" (it's in the discover section at the bottom menu) where you can actually read roughly a short paragraph and get feedback on your pronunciation. BTW, you don't need a paid subscription to use it 😊

For me, elsa is better

I don't know, but Elsa seems more interesting 😊
