They won't necessarily hire the person with more skills and experience. Often charisma, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn can win you the job over someone who doesn't have those traits as much yet has more education or experience.

Seriously, I have a lot of experience in my field, and half of my job is looking up best practices and figuring resolutions on the fly in this way. Or, when I have to prepare a project, I have time to put it together, test it, and write a report before I present it and implement it. But the interview process is brutal! Half of the questions they ask are textbook questions that I don't have memorized, and there are waaaaay too many concepts to memorize to prepare for ANY off the cuff question they ask me. I went through the process of getting my certifications already, let me tell you about my experience and be done with it, or I'm going to find ways to get those answers to you by other means! I even started using this AI tool that basically listens in on the interview and feeds me answers in real time. It felt a bit like cheating at first, but honestly, it helped me get past those ridiculous knowledge based questions and actually talk about my skills and experience. It's ridiculous that it had to come to that, though.
