Easy. First thing you do is refund your game.

Also any outposts you build on a planet are more productive if you fully survey the planet first.

I think the Frontier Ship has that old research station already.

another really good early game tip, keep the cutter for simple enemies. It does pretty decent damage and consumes no ammo, the real only down side is the range

In the first hour you should download mods to add some life to the game so that the week you will still play this game is bearable.

There is an option to auto hide helmet in hreathable atmosphere and auto hide spacesuit in settlements.

I dont remeber that in the game before but i love it so i dont have to change to look normal in cities.

If you take the bounty hunter class, you can immediatly board all the pirate ships in the tutorial and add them to your fleet.
You need to target the engines and be within 500m of the disabled ship to board, in multi combat you are not supposed to be able to board but you can in targeting mode.
So you can add all 3 pirate ships and you'll probably find contraband on board.

Change your homeship to one of the pirate ships and you can now fly anywhere, you aren't forced to fly to new atlantis. Go to the Den in the Wolf system (just north of new atlantis) and sell the contraband and buy a decent weapon + ammo.

You can fob off the main quest for now but find a ship mechanic and sell the spare pirate ships. You should get a decent amount of credits for that, find a mission board and take on pirate ship hunting missions - keep boarding and getting contraband and selling it in the wolf system.
It'll be the easiest credits in the game, will give good xp, and if you come across better ship just steal them and replace your homeship.

If you have started the main quest it will give you some decent starting crew, their abilities don't stack. Have a follower who helps with fps combat and crew that helps with ship combat, they do have different abilities.
Once you get a semi decent weap do the first mission for the Vanguard (killing the xenomorph), it unlocks some of the best lasers and one of the best shields in the game, they do require a lot of energy to use effectively though.

Steal or upgrade a ship that can jump to a high level system - you can get past the crimson fleet blockade with the ship boost perk that doesn't allow you to be shot at, if you can't jump further without being there.
Plonk a base down on a lvl 75+ system and build a mission board on it, mission boards on higher level systems give higher level missions.
Keep doing pirate hunting missions till you find a crimson fleet wright III, spacer hyena III, or even a crimson fleet specter IV. The first two have 40 energy reactors already built on them and the last is 39. You will need to max out piloting or you won't be able to fly them.

If you want a decent early game ship and decent armor then you'll need to progress through the main quest till you have to hunt down the first artifact with Sarah, you'll probably find a data slate on a crimson fleet guy that will trigger the Mantis quest line.
It's very good early game and if you save just before looting the Mantis armor, you can re-roll the legendary perks on it by loading.
The best legendary perks are....
Backpack - O2 boosting or filter, fastened, assister carry
Helm - O2 again, any (hacking if you are a loot goblin), headhunter
Armor - anti ballistic, weapon holstered, mechanized

You'll need a hell of a lot of re-rolls to get them all but getting 1-2 for all is more than good enough (you can change them in the DLC later if you want).

Last tip is if you want to reset trader inventory and credits just go to Venus in the Sol system and sleep a day there (ship traders take almost a months sleep time to reset) as time passes 100x faster there. 1 hour on venus is over 4 days in UT - which is what trader restock time is set to.
This also works for resource collectors in outposts and is really really broken end game with X tech resource collectors (worth 5k each and you get 141 every 24h slept on venus - over 700k...).
