What Do Music Producers REALLY Do?
Video Overview & Insights
What do music producers really do? It’s not just about pressing buttons or sitting in a studio—producers shape the sound, direction, and success of an artist’s music. In this video, I break down the real roles and responsibilities of a producer, the different types of music producers, and how I personally produce music. Whether you’re an aspiring producer, a musician looking to work with one, or just curious about what happens behind the scenes, you'll want to watch this video.
Are you still using this TEAC 4-tracker for anything? I put mine in "the Museum" (a display case) approx 10 years ago.

💬 Question for You: Have you ever worked with a producer, or do you want to be one? Drop a comment below!
i prefer to work with engineers. can't stand anyone telling me what to do. producers in music should be the same as stage and screen. shut up and make sure the check clears. you are the money guy, no the talent or director.

0:00 - Intro
It varies from act-to-act, project-to-project. I worked with both legendary producers Quincy Jones and Arif Mardin, and they are very involved, hands on, do all of the arrangements, write charts, are gear savvy, even tape-edited themselves. Then there are producers like Russ Titleman who never showed up once in the 3-days I worked with Brian Wilson. In General, Hip-Hop/RAP producers are "yes" men who sub-contract just about every duty to someone else, and rarely give them credit.

Look Man, I am doing it all myself, is it right?
Probably not, that's why I listen to people like you, something is bound to rub off, eventually.
If I hired you to do something for me, it means, I have more money than I currently have and I need your expertise. It would be a stupid move, for me to fire you, so I would need to shut up and listen. I don't have the confidence that you do so your advice is priceless!

Billy your channel is MAD different in the best ways. You are my favorite channel in the audio space. I even resonate with you as a self-produced artist on all the parts of the process.

I’d hire you in a heartbeat because you love cats😁

Hello Gabby!
A huge thanks to my supporters:
Giselle Turner
I've always thought of a producer as being the one who creates the instrumentals. Like DJ Khalid or Dr Dre.
Anne Sereg
Justin Mullinix
James "Bimbo" Barton Listen to Queensrÿche Empire album. That's a great mix.

Is there any chance that you could make a video of you producing a song so I can see the work
@ScottHenson-b5iI LOVE your style and how you sometimes use manipulation for something that ends up being a really good thing. You seem to be pretty knowledgeable about psychology and just GET how people work. Loved this!! Thanks for sharing!
@mayganphynix8267I always thought it's the drummers that would lead the psychotic charts,but then there is Sid, Jimmy and James.
@RedCloud-h6fLots of people taking online. This guy is one you should actually listen to. 💯 pro
@AltoPropertyI LIKE THIS GUY!!!!!! JUST FOUND THIS CHANNEL!!! SUBING FOR SURE!!!!!
@halunkarecordOMG! finally!!!! YES!!! i BEEN TELLING PEOPLE FOR A LONG TIME THAT A MUSIC PRODUCER IS NOT A BEAT MAKER!! OMG!!! YES!!! THANK YOU!!! BY THE WAY DR.DRE HAS NEVER MADE A BEAT IN HIS ENTIRE LIFE!!!! NOR IS HE A DOCTOR!!! TRUST ME INSIDER INFO!!!! THANK GOD YOU MADE THIS VIDEO!!!!
@halunkarecordPlease more videos on producing pleeeeeease
@letsalllovelain4everCame up upon your channel and so thrilled that you share your wisdom! As mom to a teen singer-songwriter, we both are deep diving to learn what we can about the industry. Of all the wisdom you’ve shared in this video, my favorite was where you said you take a stand and tell a singer that that moment they were not on pitch or slightly imperfect is what makes the song so great. Music today is not what it was. Ella knows we don’t want her to be tuned. Her first and only song recorded so far involved a all-in musician/producer like yourself, and other musicians — all real instruments. Look forward to digesting your other videos. Thank you again!

@2jazzen15:00 What you’re saying here is that often producing is being a psychologist.😂
@scottbaxendale323Thanks Billy! I'm gearing up to work with 2 singers this year in my home studio. This video is giving me great guidance, especially on the financial part!
@clozet_muzikGood stuff. Thx. Subbed
@yk303kk9:59 Kitty!!
@AmiicheeseI just found your channel and binge listened to your videos whilst I was working. Since I was about 10 years old I have been making music on whatever equipment I could afford at the time, which was usually not much, I never thought I had the technical knowledge of someone who works in a studio, after watching all these vidoes I actually realise I do and think like a professional, everything Billy says about music and production I have had the same thoughts about it.
@rickyc7845That was NOT a long video. Thanks!
@AlexanderStemkowskiSet ground rules from the get. No guessing. Be honest.
@HorseDrawnRocketAre you a Libra? Thumbs up if you're a Libra?
@shortythepresident3913This video inspired me to go make music. Thanks a lot. Even if I may not be able to do it tonight, the feeling lasts for quite a while.
@itsJustJayMusicI love this video so much cause holy shit you really hit the nail on the head so hard got me screaming “dude literally tho” at my tv while I’m layin in bed 😂😭
@thankyougvtorMac Demarco. Write, play, record, mix, release. Whole supply chain…
@paulyoungblood7484Because we can.
@AlGaraguiMost of what I learned from this video is that I do too much in the studio. To me if you’re a “hands off” producer you’re a fraud. Rick Rubin made others do the work for him to get the credit.
@MrFrizzle117Prince is an fl studio
@d.jAubreyMontyIn Hip Hop and RnB you are often wearing 2 or more hats. You are the writer, programmer, musician when it comes to making beats, a Producer when it comes to guiding the artist often called a Songwriter-Producer or a Record Producer wearing the programmer/writer hat like your Rodney Jerkins, Pharrell Williams, Lil Jon, Scott Storch, Dr. Dre.
@tech22880Lovely channel, super useful and really down-to-earth approach. I love it, man!
@crggotalAbsolutely great channel, and the wisdom we all hear from this and other videos!! 🔥
This is so fresh, I'm on a third video from the channel, and it's so good!
This is the perfect video for people who have no idea about the behind the interesting scenes stuff
@ImstretchstacksYour are awesome, thank you for sharing all your knowledge🙌
