- A viewer brought to attention that a portion of the Mortal Kombat script ended up being taken from a Mental Floss listicle, nearly word for word. Listening to myself read someone else's words was shocking. This appears to have been an unfortunate series of accidents where two bulletpoints from the Mental Floss listicle were copied and pasted into my notes without being correctly marked, and many months later were added into the script. These commonly known facts about the game, that the game was created in under a year, and that it was originally based on Jean Claude Van Damme but later reconfigured around an original character, were later read and mistakenly understood by me to be originally written and not notes intended to be used as a reminder during my writing. I have contacted the author to request permission to keep it in the video.

Bro half of these history insights make no sense lol “portal was groundbreaking for being a little game packaged along with two other bigger games”, “viacom realized they couldnt just buy their way to success, unlike activision who acquired existing IPs”, “kojima made sony make ps3 backwards compatible”, like what. And most of it sounds like a ramble that sounds like this: “how do we find meaning in controllers and accessories, how do we create connections with resources at our disposal, and how do we identify consumer interest and bargaining power?”

Great informative video. My only critique is the insane amount of time spent glazing Halo and Bungie. There are more infuencial games than just Halo out there. 4 minutes spent on WoW which is still going strong and vastly more influencial...

Nicco @allhailbuckets for his music

Eryzan, IPostSwords @IPostSwords Rhydon @RyanDopp and Chris @MykonosFan for proofreading assistance

Hot take but I actually prefer Final fantasy 2 -(Three in Japan.)-Over Final fantasy 3-(Six.) mainly due to the ascetics and music.

Stephen @SmooviesTV for his AfterEffects help

Speaking of No Man’s Sky, that game has to be one of the most inspiring comeback stories in gaming history.

The devs looked at how disappointed the player base was and used those launch funds to ACTUALLY FIX THERE GAME!
They’re still making updates to this day and each one is better than the previous.

The devs did good.

It's crazy that even with a 12 hour video, I could think of at least double the amount of games included in this video that were also influential in their own way. The gaming lore is crazy deep.

Great video. Sadly, the Mist footage at @2:21:10 was the remake, not the original. Sony was also not in the console race in 1992.

Why is it starting in 1980? The commercial start was in 1971. Sooo many arcade- and console games came out in the 70ies. Starting with Computer Space (1971), then the revolutionary Pong (1972) for Arcades and later for home. The Magnavox Odyssey, the Fairchild, Atari VCS, the PET and the Intellivison.

And games like Gunfight, Sea Wolf, Tank, Sprint, Night Driver, Breakout, Combat, Space Invaders, Galaxians, Lunar Lander or Asteroids. These were the beginnings. Classics!

7:05 I’ve never heard anyone other than myself call the Pac-Man ghosts by their “names” rather than their “nicknames,” as specified by the arcade cabinet version. Their names are Shadow, Speedy, Bashful, and Pokey; which reflect their differences in AI, so I’ve always found them more helpful than the nicknames.

The story about the Spectrum and its games are wildly exaggerated and not aligned with the truth or what actually happened. The Spectrum was the most popular machine in the UK (for a couple years) but for the rest of the world. Where Atari, Commodore, Apple, TRS80/DRAGON, MSX were much bigger.

Zelda isn't overlooked because Miyamoto didn't consider it an ARPG, it's not considered because its predecessors like Dragon Slayer and Xanadu (and later successors to those like Ys 1&2) that it was in part based on were far more influential to the ARPG genre in Japan than Zelda was. Zelda's popularity and influence were almost exclusively in the western hemisphere until Zelda 2 and A Link to the Past.
