In this video expert guide and historian Kate takes me on an adventure through the incredible and often hidden history of Valencia.

Editor: Clément Letourneur

Might be good to do some more research on the Christians and the bible, that was a little cringy to watch. I quite liked the rest of this video though.

Absolutely adore Valencia, would live there in a heartbeat.

I wouldn't want to move, too much of a trauma, at my age, but traveling and staying for a decent periodo of days to enjoy.

She’s confusing her Jesus lore. He is said to have turned water into wine as his first miracle at a wedding. There is no notice of a special cup or bowl in early Christian writings or even traditions. The first note isn’t for over 1000 years, but not even related to Christ. It’s a French Celtic story and later the myth of King Arthur popularized it in Christian culture. There are over 200 “holy grails” in European churches alone. Multiples in Spain. They have fought and killed for a lie.

If I was to move to Spain 🇪🇸, Valencia would have been my first choice to move to. One more thing, Kate is a smoke show. A nice little package and she knows where to find all those perverted statues, that’s a plus. 😂😂

Jesus don't turn water into wine during the Last Supper, that was the Wedding at Cana.
At the Last Supper Jesus symbolically turned the wine into his blood

I am a local from Valencia (born and raised) and mass tourism has become a burden here. Buses and the underground are overcrowded to the point where residents like myself can hardly use them, apartments for rent have all but disappeared, and prices are skyrocketing. This kind of tourism benefits only a handful of individuals while creating a nuisance for the rest of us who live here. Please consider visiting one of the many other wonderful cities throughout Spain: you’ll find similar experiences without adding to the strain on communities like ours.

James, please talk about the corruption scandal around obtaining a TIE in Valencia specifically. How it's "accepted" to pay the gestor to get an appointment, leading many foreigners to get scammed.

@ChadMCrowell
@

You’ll always see the surface, dear "expats"tourists. And on top of that, with your videos, more people like you will come. The best option would be to go back to your country. Many of us are fed up with so many Anglo-Saxons. You drive up rent prices, take advantage of our healthcare system, and ruin everything wherever you go.

I absolutely love your channel. You give real information. It feeks like as a viewer I am there with you. No annoying accent, no high voice pitch, not too little or too much talking...just perfect. You are the best Spain Channel out there at the moment. Loved the history lesson its so amazing. Being from South Africa I wish I could say I've been to Valencia plenty of times before! 😅💝

Luis de SanAngel was a converted jew fact that allow it to enter the court circle as a book keeper, the mention that he was a jew it gives the impression that there was a kumbaya thing between the three religions fact that couldn't be far from truth. A converted jew or muslim became a christian therefore they were not longer jew or moor or Arab but another christian.

A message for everyone visiting Valencia:
Valencia is a beautiful city, full of history, culture, great food and vibrant local life. But right now, it's also struggling with the impact of unregulated mass tourism.
If you're planning to visit, please be a respectful and conscious traveler.
👉 Avoid staying in tourist apartments like Airbnb, especially those located on ground floors. Many of these are unlicensed and are driving up rent and housing prices for the people who actually live here. Instead, choose hotels or regulated accommodations you’ll support local jobs without contributing to gentrification and housing shortages.
👉 Respect the people who live here. Valencia isn’t a theme park or a party-only destination. We live, work, and rest here. Keep noise down at night, don’t drink in the streets or urinate in public spaces. It seems obvious, but sadly it happens way too often.
👉 Get curious about the culture. Try an authentic paella (not the mixed one), learn a few words in Valencian, visit local markets, explore beyond the touristic center. There's a whole real city beyond the Instagram shots.
And while you're here:
✅ Support local businesses eat at family-run restaurants, buy from neighborhood shops. Every small purchase helps keep our communities alive.
✅ Use public transport or rent a bike, instead of clogging the city with cars or riding e-scooters on sidewalks.
✅ Ask questions, listen and connect — the best travelers are the ones who come to learn, not just consume.

Thanks for visiting Valencia with open eyes and a respectful heart. 🌱

[7:50] When I 1st tried to do a Spanish language course, I heard all about horchaterias in Valencia. Since then, I never made it to Valencia, the source of such joys. However, more recently, I spotted an 'imitation' one in Granada, which was closed. Since then, I returned to Granada and caught the shop open. I was excited to try the famed horchata, as a less than cheap treat. After such a long wait over the years, I was impressed. I wished they sold it in more locations. I've never heard of 'fartons' until today.

Watched your video. Good indeed.
But it is actually all out there to research, explore and see…

30 years experience with that city ( I died to see foreigners when I landed as I did not speak Spanish back then! ) and if the tour guide did not show this lot, your guide duped you ( nowadays, quite a few euros! )

And if the locals are not aware of what they have around them, then they are not culturally aware.

First thing to do is go out and explore, do not let anyone like myself tell what you can find out for yourself!!!

Worked for the Valencia Tourism tourist board ( the city, not the province, that was confusing back then! ) and intensely, leading up to the 2007 America’s Cup Boat race in Valencia’s port area and the F1 circuit that died a sorry death ( lack of funding I dare say…) although the track markings are still there along with remnants from race day and the America’s cup bases…)

There used to be quite a confusion but thanks to a certain Señor Salinas back in the 1990s, they got tourism well and truly sorted. Then came Forbes magazine and flaunted the city viably and economically, perhaps to the detriment of what is about to come as a backlash to what’s happened in the ‘’ciudad condal’’
There are plenty of remnants of the Arabic wall free of charge to see in el carmen, an Arabic bathing area as well behind the cathedral and fountain, with its much talked about chalice…
A must see bakery in the calle Roteros which hosts part of the original wall that surrounded the city almost opposite the free museum of the giants ( Corpus Museum ) which are paraded on the streets for Corpus Christi, a spectacular Valencia religious tradition that can be traced back to 1516.
What about the SAINT NICOLAS CHURCH which resembles the Sistine chapel in the VATICAN!!! A must visit site. Or even the arm of one of the 2 saints of Valencia!!! There is a story there to research as well.

Did you mention the 7 tributary rivers which run under the city ( and in certain areas of the city you can hear the rushing of water under your feet, obviously not between 1-19 March, when all manner of chaos takes place for LAS FALLAS ) and the weekly Thursday morning ritual of debating what should done with the city’s water, called the Tribulation de las Aguas de Valencia.
La Plaza del Arbol, which has one solemn Olive tree and a quint bar with a few tables outside it, but is adjacent to the oldest Arabic tower in Valencia, even older than the Serranos and Quart towers!!!

Did you mention that the most expensive bridge in Spain is located over the dried out riverbed which is probably the longest park cum garden in the world with el puente de los flores that need gardener every season ( 4 fast becoming 2 as winter is fast becoming spring then summer with autumn also disappearing thanks to El Niño…!
In order to adorn the bridge, the flowers must be changed, and guess who pays for that..! Not a cheap feat to make look beautiful..! So much more I do not know where to begin..!
AH, yes. Go there and see it for yourself, who knows, you may well discover the Roman / Valencia connection in la plaza de la Almoina & the back of the Basillica de Valencia. Spring time after LAS FALLAS or December to end of February is highly recommended if you do not like heat or noise.

Things that a true guide would show and tell you as a unforgettable walking experience around the city which only needs a long weekend to see and marvel
But, you’ll want to go back and see LAS Fallas after if you like noise and spectacle!
