US Presidential Election explained (explainity® explainer video)

Video Overview & Insights

Every 4 years the United States of America is electing a new president. The process itself is rather long and very old - even outdated - wich makes the whole undertaking somewhat complicated. In this video, we are trying to break it down for you anyway.

I think a toddler group having tantrums devised this system.

-------

Reminds me of applying for a job abroad.
All the offers look great, when You read them.

You call the recruiter who takes Your application for a specific job and meanwhile You get totally different offer, because its not available anymore or something else. But that's not the end, because when You travel all the way to place of Your deployment You might be informed that You will work somewhere else, because: blah blah blah. Your fate lies in job agency's hands.
So You finally have "what You asked for", and when something goes wrong... Well, noone is responsible for the outcome 😂

Okay, before I thought that American elections are stupid. Now I think they are uber dumb and unnecessarily complicated

I know all of the Ivy League political science professors will disagree with me in this comment, but when are we going to wake up and recognize that the electoral college system is completely broken and has been broken for several decades? Before you chime in trust me, I fully understand how and why we chose to use this system and don’t need the history lesson, and I am strongly of the opinion that we STILL need to ditch it entirely. It’s simple guys… go to a US population vote system (that completely eliminates electoral college votes / voting districts / and even ignores the reality that we have states just for the presidential election). Whoever gets the largest number of votes (in the entirety of the US) becomes president. In doing so, you also go to the EXACT SAME voting method in every state… no excuses…either voting machines or paper ballots. Pick one, but for god sake get rid of the damn mail-in ballot for all people that are in the US. If you can’t make the time to vote, you don’t care enough anyway. The only people that should be allowed to do a mail-in ballot are those that are deployed overseas. It can’t get much simpler or fair than this, nor does it get more bulletproof. We’ll never have another election where someone wins the popular vote and loses the election. It’s just… who got more votes… that’s it. You can still keep our structure of House of Representatives / Senators exactly the way it is today, you just change to a popular vote only system for the presidential election. BTW - I’d recommend at the same we do this, we set term limits on congress members. You do these two things and America suddenly becomes the absolute envy of the world and finally lives up to the promise that our government truly intended to keep to its people.

If they only allowed voting as I stated in previous comment , it would put an end to voter fraud and corruption of voting system, to much a chance of voter fraud with mail in votes ,because with mail in voting you have citizens voting who have been dead for decades.

Only in person voting with a valid picture I.D. should be allowed to vote , the only exception to this would be military personnel who are stationed overseas but then there picture I.D. needs to be verified by a superior officer before overnighting there vote to district of service persons city of origin

you skipped step one. get donations from the ultra wealthy towards your campaign to establish yourself as a viable candidate. this amount = 2% of the population wealthiest populations. it's called the dialing for dollars stage of elections and continues after election to secure the next election. it's can be called a plutocracy or an oligarchy because a wealthy few choose the leader and most often comes with strings.

This video's entire script for no reason: (Btw, there are 538 electors, not 535, it's the only thing I corrected in the text)

"It's that time again. The United State's presidential election is around the corner. Every 4 years, the american people decide wether a democrat or a republican gets to live in the White House for the next 4 years. But how exactly does the United State's presidential election work? Well to understand this, we have to take a closer look at the entire election year. It all starts with the primaries, in which democrats and republicans each decide who's going to be their presidential candidate. How the primaries work and who's eligible to vote in them varies from state to state. In some states, every registered voter is allowed to vote. In others, only voters registered with a particular party can cast a ballet in that party's primary. Even the dates the primaries are held are different in each state, although there are some cluster primary dates, for example, Super Tuesday. On Super Tuesday, multiple states hold their primary. And it gets even more complicated than that. Because the people don't actually elect the presidential candidate directly. With their vote, they are technically electing delegates, who in turn will support these certain candidates. In a primary, each candidate is awarded a certain amount of delegates or representatives based on the amount of votes they receive. Those delegates will later vote for their assigned candidate. Once the delegates from the various primaries have been awarded, you can already get a good sense of who will become the presidential candidate. However the delegates don't officially vote for their candidates until the National Convention. In the end, a candidate must receive over half of the delegate votes to win the party's nomination. If no candidate receives over half of the delegate votes at the convention, the party renegotiates its entries into the presidential race. Additionally, sometimes candidates will end their presidential bids. And then the delegates will have to vote again. In that case, the delegates don't necessarily have to vote for their candidates again, but are now free to each whoever they like. This procedure continues until a presidential candidate has been found. Once the two parties have officially chosen who's going head to head in the presidential race, the actual general election is held on the tuesday after the first monday in November. Registered voters over 18 get to vote for their president on that day. However, similar to the primaries, the president is not elected directly here either. The vote tally for each candidate determines how many electors are awarded to that candidate. These electors will then elect the candidate. Each state has a different number of electors depending on how many people live in that state. But the electors cannot simply vote for the candidate they wish. In 48 of the 50 states, the elector tally is awarded winner take all. This means the winner of that text gets all the votes from that state. Let's say a state has 10 electors. If at the end of the voting day, the tally awards 6 electors to the demotratic candidate and 4 to the republican, the democrat has won the election in this state and gets all 10 votes while the republican gets nothing. The winner takes all. This is why in so-called swing states, states in which both parties have an equally high chance of taking the win, candidates are campaigning harder than in other states. It is hard to predict the electoral outcome pre-election in these states. There is a total of 538 electors. The candidate who can secure more than half of the electoral vote has won the election. This is why electors from the swing states are especially important. Once the electors have been awarded, it is basically clear who will be the next president of the United States. While officially the decision is only made by the electoral college, which is the body made up of the awarded electors. This is usually 41 days after election day. On that day, the electors vote in their states. These votes are then counted in Congress around the beginning of January. And it is in Congress too where the next occupant of the White House is later officially announced. Finally, the inoguration of the next president takes place on January 28th, to formally end the election year."

Was looking at the live cam at 9pm (I live in CA) at the mail drop off location, they were JUST getting the rest of the votes but hours before that Blue has already "won" California.

So the votes that they picked up didn't get counted or didn't matter then? I'm so confused.

We don't need delegates.
We don't need electors.

And why 41 days after?

Bugger me. Down Under we vote using the worldwide popular vote system. I hope one day our buddies in the U.S. switch to the same system as everyone else. The electoral college system seems really flawed and unfair. If not unfair - then unnecessarily drawn out.
