Understanding The Racing Program

Video Overview & Insights

For more information on how to read the racing program, see the interactive guide at PennHorseRacing.com

"A racetrack program contains all the past performance information you need to pick some winners at the racetrack. It can be a little intimidating the first time you look at a racetrack program, but here is some general information to help you get started picking some winners and cashing some tickets. The program will show you the race number, the type of race and the distance of that race. It will also show you the horses name and horses number (you'll need that for betting purposes.) It will show you the jockey's name, the trainer's name, as well as their statistics. In horse racing, statistics are displayed based on number of starts, then next to it, three numbers that indicate the number of firsts, seconds, and thirds. That goes for the jockey, the trainer, and then in the top right hand corner, the horses statistics for the year and for its lifetime. So, if you look in the top right hand corner, you will see the lifetime statistics of a racehorse. The first number is the number of starts, and again, the next three numbers indicate the number of wins, second place finishes, and third place finishes for that racehorse. For more information on how to read the program, you can see our interactive guide on our website that will show you the rest of all of this information. Visit our website at PennHorseRacing.com"
