Understanding the Holy Spirit
Video Overview & Insights
What are the basics we should know about the Holy Spirit? Who is he? And why is the Holy Spirit even necessary? Why not just God the Father and God the Son? In today's episode, Bishop Barron reflects on the Holy Spirit and explains how to grow closer to him and receive all his gifts.
Thanks. We are living in a NEW ERA w/ Jesus NT. We, the children have power to live Godly for Jehova through the Holy Spirt, New Creation, Own it, Live it out!

You said it yourself, Bishop: “Our language has a way of tripping us up when we (consider) the trinity”… Indeed the ‘three modes of transitionaility (sic)” are dependent on language - notably the use of gender. We call the Father (Not say the Father Is..) male because paternity is a male function —at least in earth! We call the Son male because Jesus was a man—in his human essence. Why do we call (tefer to?) the Holy Spirit (as) male? - to keep the three persons together as one God? … Are not husband and wife now not ‘one’? Christ said they were!
- to keep the gay community happy? … it just provides atheist humanists with another weapon to mock God!
To keep to tradition? … well if you’re going to ignore ‘tradition’ in the language of the Mass, you may as well do so here as well!
- None of these reasons are convincing and listening to Thomas Tallis’ gorgeous anthem of John 14:15 “… I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth…(and She will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (ex.NIV), I cannot in all honesty feel that the three Persons of the Holy Trinity need or must be thought of as male - a spirit by definition has no gender - but could, indeed would be better thought of as female - the Consoler, Teacher, and True Love.

Major respect for Bishop Barron acknowledging when his wording was theologically inaccurate and decided to spend more time elaborating on the relationship between the Holy Spirit Jesus Christ and the Father

I'll think that I am starting to understand "The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit" but it is hard for my simple human mind to grasp it. God can do anything. He just did it this way and we will have to accept it and move on.

In Judaism and Islam, as far as I understand, they have no name for God because His name is unutterable. Reminds me of a YouTube talk I listened to by Fr. Richard Rohr, that Yahweh is breath of God and everytime we breath, we are in a sense uttering the name of God - Father Son and Holy Spirit in the breath He breathed into us to give us life. How awesome is that. But St. Paul; “if I live, I live for God and if I die I die for God so whether I live or die, it is all for God.” We each human person is a part of God’s Yahweh’s essence. Just a thought 🙏

When Christians say "filled with the Holy Spirit," they're experiencing:
V (Volume) expanding = receiving divine knowledge/wisdom
S (Speed) accelerating = perceiving truth instantly (prophecy, tongues, revelation)
E (Energy) increasing = power to manifest miracles (healing, exorcism, signs)
Speaking in tongues = S (perception speed) so fast it bypasses language
Prophecy = V (volume) accessing information beyond normal knowing
Miracles = E (energy) so high it overrides physical laws

6:50 Woahhhh are you saying the Spirit proceeds from the Father AND the Son rn???
@PostThaMostThe Holy Spirit is directly responsible for my return to the Catholic Faith after having been a lapsed Catholic for most of my adult life. When I sincerely opened my heart to God’s existence, I started feeling unexplained moments of joy and happiness. I later realized that I was experiencing the presence of the Holy Spirit within me.
@FirestormAudioSo the Trinity is still a mystery: One God and its (God identifies itself as a he) three actions
@qaswedfr1234I have heard that it is actually heresy to say that the Holy Spirit is the love between father and son, he is is own person in his own right and that formulation puts the Holy Spirit in subjection to the other two in a major way, which puts the equal personhood of the spirit in jeopardy.
@mmariokart231❤️👍🏼🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻Amen 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
@MarcialIRamirezSantiagoThank you for these wise words. Now I know I believe in the Holy Spirit. Thank you.
@petelajal-r2kWithout the Holy Spirit nobody can have a spiritual life. He makes it all possible. He is large and in charge. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
@george277421:50 - so interesting
@saoirserosenstock8144Ephesians 1:13 And you also were included with Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of his glory. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. We cannot lose the Holy Spirit, according to the Bible and, therefore, don't have to keep praying for Him to come to us.
@Van-v3vBlah, blah, blah. Worse splaining I've ever heard. god is not HE, HS is not HE.
@marwar819Huh?
@louisevad6091I just watched a Billy Graham on the Holy Spirit. These guys speak the truth. The Holy Spirit gives us power over our enemies. Love power and a sound mind.
@TrustintheSon1That’s mooooodalism PATRICK
@reformedweeb4360My question is why is it all purely on the intellectual level? No one would know about the Holy Spirit without being taught. No one would have any theological understanding about life without being taught. You wouldn't come to any of these conclusions on your own just from observing reality and experiencing life. We can come to some conclusions about what is right or wrong and we all know naturally that to do harm to others is wrong. I'm not saying there is not a truth to be discovered but theology doesn't fall into that category because as mentioned it is something we have to learn about. A person just observing life and experiencing their own existence would never come to the knowledge of a Trinity or any of that. It is created concepts and mental gymnastics and has no actual beating in life. If it is true then it should be able to be experienced by everyone.
@allenmorgan4309thank you Bishop Barron, great explication, very deep. I have got a different vision of celestial person, not like man
@alanaguilar3161I became Catholic at age 61. Nothing before. Married a cradel Catholic and for 35 years stayed on the sidelines. I signed up for the classes and my Wife sponsored me and attend the classes. What a great experience ! Our priest at the time was awesome as well as the teachers, it truly was a community experience. During this time I was very interested/Fascinated in the Holy Spirit.
The morning i was to be confirmed and Baptized I had breakfast and once finished i drove next door to a hardware store. Upon existing my truck and walked to the entrance only a few steps, out of the corner of my eye i noticed a movement and turned towards it and I spotted a Dove landing on the right corner of my tailgate. I wailked back to my truck rested my elbow on the left corner of the tailgate and the Dove and I looked each other in the eye for a couple seconds, i then said " Ok , i got the message" and the Dove/Holy Spirt
Flew off. I thought BAMM, im part of the team. 😇
Let us meditate on 2 Corinthians 3:17
@wg6338The only evidence that the HS is a 'person' is based on a quirk of Greek grammer in John's gospel! Fact! ELEVEN TIMES in the NT the Spirit is linked with power! Rom 15:9 "With the power of the Holy Spirit". Acts 1:8 "You shall recieve power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you". Also the HS is linked by contrast to 'Water' ( "I baptize you with water, that one will baptize you with the HS" (John 1:33) It is mostly referred to as "God's Holy Spirit" thus not a seperate 'person'! Also Luke 11:20 "I heal by the finger of God" again part of God Himself acting, projecting His power to accomplish His will "If you send forth YOUR Spirit, they are created" Psalm 104:30
@kiwihans100In Deut 9:10 it states that the 'ten commandments' were written by "God's finger" . Jesus stated that he healed people "By God's finger" too! see Luke 11:20. So surely this illustration reveals that just as a person's 'finger' is PART OF them, an extension of the power they have in their body! So the bible mostly speaks of the HS as "God's Spirit. It is His! It is not then a seperate 'person' that is 'God the Holy Spirit' a so called 'third part of a trinity'. This is completely FALSE and was Not taught till the Council of Constantinople in 381 CE.
@kiwihans100This Word on Fire interview is EXCELLENT, imho...Although it was done 4 yrs ago, I haven't seen it before. What a find! Thank you both, Mr. Brandon & Bishop Barron.
With your mentioning WonF new releases of books, I would like to mention one from your organization that means SO much to me: The HOLY HOUR: Meditations for Eucharistic Adoration, edited by Matthew Becklo, c 2022. It is this one that I would like to buy additional copies for gifts. This book includes Scripture, reflections by Bishop Barron & notable others, prayers & poetry by saints including St. Catherine of Siena + several of my favorites: Edith Stein, St. John Henry Newman, Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, & more, as well as recent Popes, & the Catechism. As if that were not enough, it is a soft leather like material w/BEAUTIFUL photography & graphics pages throughtout the book. If there were a place, I'd offer this as a book review...maybe Amazon! THANK YOU for this JEWEL of a publication! 🤗
The Catholic Church must preach more about the Holy spirit, although I believe that the Father, the First Person of the Holy Trinity is hardly known by Catholics. He's hardly ever preached about by the Catholic hierarchy. The Heavenly Father is attacked theologically by Satan through the woke movement.
@valeriocritelli6714Better words have never been spoken ❤
@annairungu2678In the Byzantine Catholic Church, they do all the sacraments all at once when they're a baby. 👍🏻
@dawninilThank you Bishop Baron for your talk on the Holy Spirit. I talk to God, I talk to Jesus and pray to the Holy Spirit, but for the first time in my life I realized just now that God the Holy Spirit was always with me too. I love you. I pray for all our priest and religious.
@ninakosi7979I knew The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are one thank you for the message 🧚♀️✝️🕊🧚♀️✝️🕊🧚♀️✝️🕊
@tasiaflynn3549Im pretty confused
@hithere8753Bishop Barron how do you explain a none believer when there is so much evidence of evidence I thank the lord that I believe
@richardorduno6492So Holy Spirit’s existance depends on creation. Before creation, Holy Spirit was redundant.. interesting explanation..
@mustafam7431So what I gather from this discussion is that God is the eternal embodiment of all perfect creation in the universe. Then, God sent his love for us through the Holy Spirit so Mary could give birth to His incarnate self. God's incarnate self, His son Jesus Christ, was the mortal connection through which His love for us could be shown in our plain of existence through His teachings and ultimate sacrifice via crucifixion. This in turn saved our mortal souls and provided an eternal connection to Him via the Holy Spirit directly. So the Holy Spirit is that divine love that eternally connects us to God, and therefore connects and binds the Holy Trinity. Am I getting that right?
@docgillygun9531A gust of wind is my reminder that the Holy Spirit lives within us…great peace!
@marilynpeluso7903I would like to hear your explanation of baptism of the Holy spirit that the charismatic renewal always emphasize.
@isaiahdibie1184The Holy Spirit is the living dynamic of the Beatific Vision.
