ULTRA ORTHODOX: The Strict Reality of Being a Rabbi’s Wife
Video Overview & Insights
Rachel was raised in Israel by Canadian parents who converted to strict Orthodox Judaism as adults. Girls were taught from a very young age that their primary purpose was to become wives and mothers, and the culture emphasized conformity, modesty, and obedience. Rachel explains how these systems created strong psychological pressure, particularly around purity culture, body image, and social behavior, while also framing outsiders and even other Jewish groups as morally inferior. At 18, after only a few weeks of dating, she became engaged to a man who fit the religious and cultural criteria expected of her, despite lingering doubts and emotional attachment to someone else.
actually, to eat meat is highly immoral, considering the great suffering, that animal went through

I'm an Orthodox Jew. I was born into it and am raising my children in the same way. I have never felt that it was cult-ish. I have gone thru very hard things in my life and for me (not judging anyone else), I know that I couldn't have survived it without my intense connection to G-D and my religion. There is definitely a different side to the views of the interviews that I've seen of yours. I think you do a great job!! And I appreciate that u give these ppl a place to speak their stories, but there is DEFINITELY a different side to Orthodox Judaism and I wish ppl had the opportunity to see the flip side. One thing I MUST say is that we are absolutely NOT sexualizing 3 year old girls!! That is absolutely NOT the reason that we teach our children from a young age to dress and act modestly. I would really love to talk to you to show you the other side of this! Have a great day!! I should have started with this: I very much enjoy your interviews! U seem very fair and also very sympathetic, as well as really giving your guests the space and time to really tell their story! I may not always agree, but it is STILL their right to speak their minds. Wishing you continued success!!

What she experienced in that religion was such an example of modern day Pharisees!! If you see this you would greatly benefit from reading the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John in the beginning of the New Testament and see how Jesus (God Himself in human flesh) responds to the religious people (Pharisees, Scribes, Sadducees) !! ❤

You can’t say gods name if you have to pee? The idea that the human body is inherently disgusting and shameful feels like an insidious control tactic

Sounds like she joined the purple hair cult instead!
Yeah, I think no rules sounds great! Everyone just do what the hell you want! Run amock! There should be no laws of the Land either, no speed limit, no seat belts, no age limit for drinking alcohol, no age limit for sex, noone wants to be part of a cult with rules and laws that keep people safe and in check! Makes alot of sense! Live a purposeless, meaningless, carefree life! Eat what you want, dress how you want (walk around naked if you so please), sleep with whomever you want...Just do what makes YOU happy! Sounds so rewarding! No thanx for me! I really enjoy living a life with meaning and purpose!!

I agree that it's much harder to escape from so called intellectual beliefs than faith. It's a trick all wily religions play on.

13:02 Here lies the problem
1:07:14 it sounds to me like the "laws on the books" were originally made to protect woman. But then all these other ideas trickled in to the culture, maybe a result of living in Christian countries?

00:11:16 Growing up in Israel
Most Jewish religious couples including myslef are perfectly happy with the way we live according to the laws of our religion. The divorce rate is very low amongst religious Jewish couples! The grass is not usually greener on the other side! Are those that don't follow a religious lifestyle statistically any happier then their religious counterparts? Absolutely not! Would one say that non religious couples have better, more fulfilling marriages and lifestyles? Not necessarily at all! The divorce rate amongst the general secular population is MUCH higher then those of their religious counterparts, so in my opinion this is just one rebelious women's opinion and one should not think for a moment that this is how other religious Jewish women think (but are perhaps afraid to express). It could not be further from the truth. I have zero desire to live a G-dless, selfish, self centered existence. Myself and most other religious women are perfectly happy living a rich, G-dly fulfilling life full of purpose and meaning! Come visit a religious Jewish home and you'll see for youself! We are amongst the happiest, most satisfied, fulfilled people on the planet, and I speak from experience living this way for the past 50 years! The few people that I know that threw away their religion thinking they would be so much happier without it are much less happy in their current carefree lifestyle! Just because this women decided to toss away her religion and live just for her own selfish desires does not mean that's the ideal way to live! because its absolutely not! A simple analogy would be an obese person sitting on the couch stuffing themselves with pizza, fries and desserts and saying they have it better then the person that goes to the gym and eats a healthy diet because they don't need to put in any effort or go out of their comfort zone, they get to do things the easier way! We can all agree that the satisfaction of putting in effort for something so rewarding such as feeling fit and healthy or having a conncetion with G-d and a meaningful life is certainly worth all the effort and hardship involved. There is a reason why G-d made these laws and G-d certainly knows best! Thank G-d I am perfectly happy following all the Jewish laws and not just living a selfish, self centered existence! It feels very rewarding living for a higher purpose, a G-dly and holy life instead of a shallow and meaningless purposefree, selfish existence!
I feel bad for her ex husband who married a religious women hoping to raise a beautiful religious family together and she chose to rebel and influence some of their children to follow in her rebelious ways! Seems unfair, as that's not what he signed up for! But never mind him! Its all about her selfish desires! Me, me me me!

So you cannot say God's name in the bathroom? Wow! I do pray to God anywhere- and I do feel a connection with him- even when I pray while in the shower. God is everywhere, and we can access Him at any time. So sorry you went through all of this!

Yeah, one point I decided I didn’t wanna do the Mikva, we never had like half a dozen rabbis knock on the door and ask why I wasn’t going and then recently despite the fact that we’re secular at this point, I decided to start going again I wanted not just time for me but some special time for the deeper spiritual part of me. And so I decided to start going to the McFar again one of the best things about being Jewish is that since you’re usually Jewish by birth, there’s no kicking you out of the club. We’re just not doing it now. If I don’t go to synagogue it’s like if I miss a class when I’m taking a course it’s like oh I hope you’re OK. I hope there wasn’t a an accident that caused you to miss it, but nobody is going to think that they can tell me whether or not my reason is good enough. It always hurts when I see Judaism practiced as a high control religion or as a cult but I also kind of throw up my hand and say they are colts in every type of human grouping and we’re just no different. We don’t have a magic Jean that makes us special and immune to cults other than my Temple had us get together twice a year for programming on how to resist being recruited and how to recognize when a group you’re starting to join start smelling like a cult and how to get back out, but I think that’s the only thing I did in your group, but it was well worth it and I think it’s kind of a good message for many young adults who are planning to go away to college to a new job in a new city or whatever when you move in you’re looking for a new group you are vulnerable to these things and you think joining a house of worship is a safe way to go except for when it gets culty.

so similar to being muslim!!
@manuelareid4684Considering your own needs is not selfish, it is your absolute right.
@aprilporter7908U didn’t get and never get it till u Do what u like Do it
@sorayariuoni2183This is so sad! Freedom is so important.
@lisaperlstein7711From what I understand, the men are expected to study the torah or do religious duties for a majority of their time, and don't get a regular education. The women have get a regular education in addition to a religious one so they can earn money. But if women are also expected to have a lot of children, how does this work financially?
@thesavagekitti5668All organized religion is about sex and controlling women!!!
@carolyncrawford759I'm so sorry this was her experience. My Jewish religious journey has been so different to this. There is so much good in our religion, I wish this was her experience of Judaism.
@hsa330That's all in the Old Testament and because there's no belief and Yeshua as being the Messiah everything is done the Old Testament why.
@letshaveacuppa_official🌼🇩🇰🌼
@MadrielDKThis is Judaism looking bad. Unfortunately there are those who take it too far. I'm so sorry you went through that. Main stream / yeshivish Judaism is NOT a cult. Come visit us sometime! Sending love, my sister.
@sophialejtman5504So Hi everybody. I am an orthodox practicing Jew. Am I thriving? I think so. Do I like it? Yes. Why ??? I want to point out briefly and respectfully the difference between my way of thinking and Raquel's and the podcaster's. If you don't believe in God, so by all means, do what u want when you want and how you want. You are the only one that can ever decide what is good for yourself. You are relying on your human brain and emotions for everything in life. And good luck to you. you will need it. But if you believe that there is a God and he is infinitely good even when this is not understood by human logic, you understand that God's view of things are perfect, then you can accept things that are hard to swallow. There are many many happy Jewish orthodox people today and they are proceeded by thousands of years of history. Not dumb or suppressed people. Rather people who have learned to enjoy life with the recipe of a Creator who made life. Wishing Raquel and the podcaster true happiness.
@unasanehtoikef32This cult is just sick
@CatherineZimicFrank insightful discussion with some perspective from distance in time and other life experiences
@rachelgranter8623God forbid (literally) men experience any discomfort unless they can blame women for it.
@cloverhighfivecertain things discussed is more the law of men than what the Holy one says, even Jacob and Rachel were playing together
@GCM4uSo, an 8 year old boy can touch a 4 year old girl??? Did I hear that correctly???
@christinafidance340When all of the onus is on women, you know a man wrote the rules, not God. Menstruation isn’t unclean, nursing a child isn’t unclean and your husband should see you uncovered in your home if that’s normal for you. The extremes people go to is so sad to be seen as good with God.
@MagicSchoolbus1If only this women would've married her high school boyfriend, she would have been a very happy God loving Jew.
@EmperorOfTheAliensI will say things simply. I am unaware of any society, any public education, or family that encourages a person to question one's assumptions and indoctrination. The best that I was able to do was to tell my son to copy what I do that works for him and to reject the rest. For most people, they understand that if they go along with things as they are, they don't have to think. Other people understand that if they want something more in one's life, one has to think.
@bdcochran01✝️🏞️👫📚🏠⛪ Ortodocsi, evreii ? Nu! Iudaici e termenul corect. Nu mai induceti Lumea în eroare.

@LenoreAllen-xe4tjI grew up in the same background as her and always thought that as a gay man and when I was a kid a gay boy that all of that doesn't make sense to me because what if you're gay like me? Then you're not into women that way so you allowed to be around men and boys though so it crazy. lol
@dineyashworth8578I’m curious about how it went about when you asked the kids
@spidamitchell8311Damn would be really call to hear more for this person.
Or if she responds to comments.
Definitely she has what to say!
I hate the fact that you have to get your discharge checked by a Rabbi.
@ValerieLeaderMisogyny and control veiled as modesty and goodness. I worked in an Orthodox long term care home and the yeshiva boys would visit. They were little sh*ts. The brats were so rude and disrespectful. Could not stand them. Women in their eyes were scum. To the greater community women were merely vessels.
@adppositiveapproachtocare45Nebach
@bsdiyhI was raised in a conservative christian southern religion and so many things were the same for me. This is so enlightening for me. I am so sad that spirituality is lost in all the rules, guilt, and oppression of women.
@glendagaiDo lady blue hair got a ig?
@Sam-m6d8uTo me it seems what is lacking is the freedom and love of God for each individual. Reminds me a lot of Christian cult’s “purity culture”
