Type 1 Diabetes Signs & Symptoms | Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Complications & Why They Occur

Unraveling Type 1 Diabetes: From Cellular Changes to Clinical Symptoms

Managing a type 1 diabetes diagnosis begins with understanding the "cause" of the symptoms. Because this is an autoimmune disease—where the body stops producing insulin—it causes significant metabolic changes that affect the entire body.

This lesson covers:

* The root cause of insulin deficiency.

* How high glucose levels manifest as physical symptoms.

* The science behind complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis.

Knowledge is the first step toward managing the disease. If this lesson helped clarify the complexities of type 1 diabetes, please like and subscribe to join our learning community.

— @Life_style67

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition involving destruction of pancreatic beta cells, which leads to compromised or completely absent production of insulin. The lack of insulin leads to very high levels of glucose and other metabolic changes, which causes many different signs and symptoms.

I was diagnosed T2 around 1.5 months ago, I did my own research and with healthy food and exercise I've managed to reduce my insulin from 20 units a day down to 10. As the guy says, exercise is key. I'm lucky in that my new job provides me with well over an hours walking a day so it's no effort at all. I've reduced my carbs to 40g per meal (except breakfast) and a treat meal once a week. I went to my DSN not long ago and she said she'd never seen BS numbers as good as mine and about a week later I received a CC of a letter to my doctor stating that my lipid profile was excellent blah blah blah. Now bare in mind that I was 108kg (obese) when this started, I'm 96kg now and that's still well off normal weight. Now I know everybody is different but if I can get these results from food and exercise at 108kg then pretty much anyone can.

Breakfast: 50g Bran Flakes and a few blueberries. Meds, multivitamin, omega 3,6,9 capsule, electrolyte tablets.

Lunch: Vegetable smoothie (kale, avacado, spinach etc) and a meat sandwich with tomatoes or something.

Dinner: 30g wholewheat pasta, 200g+ mixed veg and either fish or meat.

Same thing 6 times a week and the weight is falling off, my blood sugar is perfect and I feel better than ever (I'm 39). I know the diet sounds boring and it is for the most part, but there's no way I'm going through the complications diabetes brings if I can do something about it.

If you've just been diagnosed, this guy know what he's talking a boat. Diet and exercise people. Oh, and alcohol will mess with your blood sugars BIG time, I usually wake up with a 4.? mmol/l, after alcohol I wake up in the 6.? mmol/l.

I was told 4 years ago that i was prediabetic and had pcos. I since lost 50lbs and now i think i may by hypoglycemic. Doctors wont listen to me though, even though my dad is diabetic. Im 22 and im getting lows or little bouts of them here and there. It would explain almost every issue ive been dealing with over the last couple years.

I became type 2 diabetic in 2021. I refused meds and said I would change my diet and that's what I did. I reversed it 4 months later. I lost a lot of weight quickly. I only eat food I make myself. At the beginning my body and brain were in a battle but I stuck rigid to it and eventually my body and brain clicked into sync. My body now looks amazing and I feel fantastic. The only treat I eat daily is a homemade flapjack and I make a batch of one week's worth. Weirdly my eyesight has improved, but here is the kicker. This is a lifelong dietary change, it's not something I can dip in and out of and it takes discipline. I don't crave sugar anymore, but I feel like a 25 year old in a body that now only looks like the body of a 25-30 year old in peak physical form and I'm 59. I keep a photo of myself on the fridge to remind myself how I used to look. It's a great motivator to keep on track. Exercise wise, I walk just 20 minutes a day at a fast enough pace to get my heart rate up. Now I do intermittent fasting and don't have breakfast until mid morning and don't eat after 8pm. All I can say is it's like I have shed the body of an old avatar and I am in a new fresh body full of energy. It's like I have been reborn.

I’ve had type 1 diabetes for 15 years. I was diagnosed when I was still a child. My blood sugar was 539 and I only weighed 55lbs. I was an hour away from a coma and a week away from death. Luckily my dad took me to the doctor twice and forced them to get blood work done. He saved my life. I used to do competitive sports and actually had a seizure from low blood sugar after 8 hours of gymnastics. Needless to say I changed my career path from an athlete to an artist and musician because of my condition. I hope people understand that autoimmune conditions are certainly not a joking matter. Thanks for the video.

Back in January 2016, my friend Richard and I were having a big birthday party since both of our birthdays occurred the same week. We were all planning to hang out that Saturday, which was his birthday.

Sometime around lunch, my mom was noticing that Richard’s skin appeared really grayish and pale, which isn’t normal. My mom initially didn’t think anything of it, until she noticed how often Richard was drinking water and going to the bathroom. She was thinking it could potentially be diabetes, but she didn’t want to jump to conclusions too fast.

When Richard talked to her, she smelled his ketone breath and immediately had a bad feeling that he had diabetes. She called his mom, but got no answer.

Later that night, she bought a new battery for her glucose meter and pricked his finger. His blood sugar was a staggering 552mg/dL. The normal blood sugar shouldn’t be higher than 140 mg/dL. She put the party on pause and had a friend take him to the hospital.

He spent a week in the hospital and when he was released, he looked much better. These days, Richard has to watch what he eats and has a special meter that checks his blood sugar and helps him adjust it.

Basically my mom saved his life because he would’ve likely slipped into a coma if she hadn’t done anything
