Trying to Land a Plane (to Prove the Dunning-Kruger Effect)

Video Overview & Insights

Turns out it’s harder than I thought. But we all got a chance to learn about unconscious overconfidence. Where else do you see the Dunning-Kruger Effect show up in the world?

When I am on a plane, it's usually for work, and what I think is, "Please crash into the ocean now."

— @rvllctt871

You may not be an expert, but perhaps you feel pretty confident that you could ride a motorcycle, or give someone a decent haircut - if you absolutely had to - right? Not so much, according to the psychological phenomenon known as the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Turns out we’re all at risk of being overconfident about something. Watch Joe put this theory to the test as he tries to land a 737 (in a simulator, of course). Oh, did we mention Joe's not a pilot?

Special thanks to our Brain Trust Patrons:

Like.... First thing would be to establish radio go get help. No bloody video demonstrates that which only fuels the dunning krugger effect even more .

The Dunning-Kruger Effect is why I hate when people argue about politics. I'm centrist, but it seems partisan people fall for this effect very easily.

The cure for the effect is to do science and engineering problems…you quickly learn how hard it is to actually know something

I have about 10 minutes of flying experience in the real world (Counting the time I spent controlling an aircraft irl, not time I spent on board aircraft, of course). I REALLY want to go to a flight sim to find out, whether I can do it. But I think I'd try it with an A320 instead of a 737.

The hardest part of this is being able to contact ATC. If you don't know how to do that, you are screwed. It is not straightforward.

The pilot named Hans looks a lot like George W. Bush in the 2000's.

It is kind of crazy that we are at a point where you can punch in some information and adjust the flaps and the plane handles pretty much the entire landing. You get the gear down, flaps, enter some data, done it lands.

— @TrackerRoo

Baerbel Winkler

Robert Young

Yeah, I think I could do it - in calm weather and with a fully working aircraft. Add one or more failures and/or inclement weather, and the probability of success drops.

Flight simulators teach you how the airplane's systems work, and how to get to the runway.
But they can't teach you how to land the plane, the physics mechanics of flight are very difficult to simulate, too many variables!

This actually the funniest video in the world when you know how to fly. I feel like it took me back to the days when I was learning how to fly and everything he says is clip to the good old days 😂😂

Man! Ya've tried without the auto-pilot. Still a good mark with the very first try.

would be interesting to see how men vs women respond to this question and minorities, since women and minorities severely underplay their skills in hiring settings for example as compared to men.

All of this is of course assuming the passenger knows how to key the mic and tune the radio to the proper frequency to begin with

The older I get, the more I realize, the less I know.

@SlaveNation1

It all depends on what runway.. Even some cessna pilots wouldn't be able to land jet on every single runway.... If you have ILS approach and its nice weather you would have to be really bad not to land.. So we already know everyone can land A320 or 737 onto appropriate runway in good weather conditions.

@Gmancro929
@

to get to the point of "i think i could probably do this" you probably need to ATLEAST play flight sim and land passenger jets properly.

@plutoidrepublic2895

Dunning Kreuger effect is only an important issue when there is something at risk, lives, money, business reputation. Otherwise, who cares?

@wulphstein
@

I've been looking for the perfect word to describe MAGA. The Dunn and Kruger effect. Now I know.

@willieguapo
@

If the dunning Kruger effect is the lack of knowledge or expertise, then we all suffer from it.

@TinfoilHatWearer
@

I can land any plane.

@AlterKater
@

I know enough to crash the plane 😂

@clydeblackburn1653
@

10:07 No you nosed in, And then were doused in retardant from the equipment standing by because they already knew you were an emergency aircraft. Everyone got a good jolt/ride and story (…plus there’ll probably be somebody on there wanting to thank you for being the reason they didn’t become physics that day).

So you actually were correct, you had accurately assessed your potential skill-level… just make sure to factor that in.

Ugh I wanna try this sooooo bad too!

@Dreamcatcher_4886
@

The problem is amplified when everything goes right. Person thinks they really know their stuff.
.
The issue is not when everything goes right, but when it goes wrong. Especially when seconds count.

@kevincaruthers5412
@

Plot Twist: the “pilot” in this video is really a manager at the Piggly Wiggly. He just thinks he knows how to fly therefore he is the subject of the Dunning Kruger effect.

@DanBryant-qj2pl
@

The most challenging aspect of flying is navigation with limited NAV aids. And knowing how to work all of the navigational equipment

And of course, landing through a micro burst.

@DanBryant-qj2pl
@

Could i land a perfectly operational airplane? With over 500 hours in microsoft flight simulator, probable. If there was an engine failure or any type of checklists to run, no i dont think i could.

@DeathMerchant94
@

I consider a non-pilot getting the aircraft on the ground in a way in which the passengers are still alive to be a successful landing. The loss of the plane is immaterial.

@mrblack888
@

I could land the plane, easy. I mean, how hard can it be? AP sets the heading, then it's just about capturing the glide slope, lowering speed, flaps on, touchdown, reverse thrust and taxi to get some well deserved pints.

@e3498-v7l
@

That was exciting. More so with Leslie Nielsen dictating instructions via radio 😂

@borisbabich
@

I'm about to start flight academy and I'll think about it 50000 times before raising my hand in case both captain and FO are incapacitated 😅

@SiligardiS

In other words the old adage is true a little knowledge is a dangerous thing

@bobnefu4452
@

I guess it's true what they say. You don't know what you don't know

@danielfrench9413
@

Yeah I could definitely land the plane if I had contact with the ATC and the plane has an auto pilot that can land.

@mics1694
@

Excellent! I don't wrap myself around the DK effect, I have the problem where other people do it to me. I've been involved with so many things in my life that people mistake my familiarity with a subject as expertise. I've often been given jobs that are not even in my titled wheelhouse as I can structure a process around what I know and figure out what I don't (this happens a lot with small staffs / crews). I'm probably more like 40 chopped up people that have been thrown in a blender.

@brianatkinson6600
@

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Never overestimate your abilities especially in situations where other lives depend on you. I worked in an area under the guidance of professionals and if you have even a little enlightenment or intelligence you realise that you may have extensive knowledge but your expertise is very limited. As a responsible adult never operate outside your level of competence.

@Onlyme4now
@

Step 1 find how to work the radio so you get someone to guide you on how to make the autopilot land the plane semi autonomously. Only way you get a chance at surviving. Only manual piloting you got to do is steer the plane with the pedals once it's landed so it stays centered. Mentour did a video on this, seems doable...in theory.

@hmmmhhhmmh
@

I feel this is very true in healthcare. People come in to the hospital confident they know more than doctors because they read an article in google.

@Luis_Mireles
@

I’m not a pilot but I have 2000 hours in flight simulator. It may be rough but I think the passengers will live

@mj_3861
@

The basics are easy to grasp. Actually managing a plane isn't too hard so long as you've gotten familiar with it and have practiced on a simulator off some kind. Managing a plane in an emergency is extremely difficult and requires real training.

@FatBeardo
@

3:12 you don't know what you don't know.

@Mike1614YT
@

I'm missing the part where "he crushed the gear" was that not shown? Not a great landing but DR and TD looked within limits.

@-Mike
@

I could do it and probably still have an open casket.

@NemoOutus

Good line from the movie, "Airplane". Hilarious movie!

As someone who has flown a plane, even the small ones can feel overwhelming at first… there’s so much to keep track of, it takes all of your attention constantly.
