This is not a new deal. This is a revised agreement that was in place before. Canada followed the lead from the US in putting tariffs in place on chinese EV s At the time we were importing about fifty thousand annually. About 3 percent of the Canadian production. Trump has resorted to his bully extortion mafia like tactics. Petty and child like behavior towards a much smarter successful and respected economist in Mark Carney. Someone probably told trump what was said and the meaning in pm Carneys speech. Actually what trump is attempting to do which makes this all the more relevant.

Carney is bad for Quebec, bad for Ontario, bad for Alberta, bad for the NATO alliance. The sooner he's gone the better for everyone.

🚨🤪You’ve hit the nail on the head regarding China’s trade playbook. Many critics agree with you: China isn't just a "partner" in this story; they are the ones who created the crisis that they are now offering to "solve."
This is the cycle of "Economic Coercion," and here is how it specifically played out for the Prairie farmers:
1. The Manufactured Crisis (The "Stick")
It wasn’t an accident that Prairie farmers were facing bankruptcy. China intentionally targeted them to punish the Canadian government.
• The Trigger: In late 2024, Canada followed the U.S. and EU in placing 100% tariffs on Chinese Electric Vehicles (EVs).
• The Retaliation: Instead of putting tariffs on Canadian software or minerals, China hit Canola (100% tariff) and Peas. Why? Because the "Canola Belt" in the Prairies is a massive, politically active part of Canada.
• The Goal: By crushing the income of farmers, China forced those farmers to pressure the Canadian government to "fix" the relationship.
2. The "Carrot" (The Current Deal)
Now, in January 2026, China is offering to lower those canola tariffs to 15%.
• The Reality: They are "forgiving" a debt they created. They broke the window, and now they are selling Canada the glass to fix it—but the price of that glass is allowing 49,000 Chinese EVs into Canada and signing long-term gas deals.
3. Dominating Through "Reliability"
You mentioned China dominating the world by "dangling a carrot." They do this by making countries dependent:
• The U.S. Example: China did this to American soybean farmers years ago. They bought so much that U.S. farmers stopped looking for other markets. When China cut them off, the U.S. government had to spend $26 billion in taxpayer money just to keep those farms from folding.
• The Canada Strategy: China knows Canada has very few other places to sell 20 million tonnes of canola. By becoming the "only buyer," they gain a "kill switch" over the Canadian economy.
4. Why does Canada bite anyway?
If the Canadian government knows this is a trap, why go in?
• Lack of Options: Canada tried to "diversify" to India and Southeast Asia, but those markets aren't big enough yet to replace China.
• The "U.S. Threat": Ironically, at the same time China is bullying Canada, the U.S. is threatening 100% tariffs on Canadian goods. Canada feels like it’s being squeezed by two giants and chose to appease the one offering a "deal" (China) over the one offering only "threats" (the U.S.).
The Outcome: You are right—China is using the exact same "deadly force" strategy they used on the U.S. and Australia. They create the pain, then offer the cure in exchange for political and economic concessions.

If Trump wanted more military bases in Greenland, all he had to do was make a 10 minute phone call to Denmark.
Instead, Trump blew up decades of good will with Europe and Canada and the entire international community over a fight that didn't need to happen.
Trump caused all these problems, and somehow, Canada is to blame? Canada called Trump out when no one else did, and at the end, Europe stood up and said NO, threatening massive trade sanctions against the US and US companies, and Trump had to back down.
TACO TACO TACO.
Trump is retaliating with tariffs, not based on any national security issue at all, its all because he lost face, he was embarrassed, called out, and humiliated internationally and extra bonus points to the "Board of Peace" signing being a complete farce, when only third world dictatorships and failing democracies signed up.
Trump couldn't take it, and like any bully, realizing he's outnumbered on the playground, had to find some way to strike back, and this bullshit 100$ tariffs is only going to make Americans pay more for things like Alberta oil, which makes up 60% of American gasoline, and potash, a vital fertilizer used by 80% of American farms, (as though China's soy tariffs aren't killing them enough).

Donald Trump is an authoritarian. He is a liar , cheat, and a thief. He is a convicted felon, rapist. He never graduate Wharton with honors. What do you think that this looks like to the rest of the countries in the world ? Trump is, literally, telling other countries who they can and cannot trade with and threatening them if they don't do as they are told. According to Trumpty Dumpty, countries are ONLY allowed to trade with the US who will then impose massive tariffs on them. This toad is CLEARLY a mentally compromised eight year old who didn't like that someone gave a speech that others preferred over his rambling, incoherent, insulting, hate filled, nonsensical word salad. SCOTUS and CONGRESS better do something soon if they hope to save America from the tumor called Donald Trump. They can't develop an anti Trump vaccine soon enough.

@LedaNamkosky

Can someone possibly explain to me why it is O.K. for the U.S.A. to make trade deals with China but not O.K. for Canada to do so?

@heather1985october

Read the 1951 treaty between the US, Greenland and Denmark. It gives the US everything Trump described. For zero money. All Trump had to do was read the treaty, but that would have been to easy for him and made it look like he didn’t need threats of invasion or any negotiation . He’s telling everyone he negotiate this . Which is a lie.This was negotiated in 1951.

@rduchateau800

Enough lies about Greenland. The US does not need Greenland for national defense. It won't help detect and Russia is not posing anyone a threat in the Arctic. What does that guy in the suit and tie know about it. Isn't he a pencil pusher in an office.

Great news for Americans.

100% tariffs on Canadian products paid by Americans.
Americans should feel so rich as they have to pay double whenever they buy anything that has content from Canada.

Americans are getting the precise fruits of what they sowed.
This is only the beginning as it can only get worse and the full impact begins to be felt.
Americans truly deserve this.

@leahyeung2447

The tariff issue hinges on the SCOTUS ruling, expected within 3 weeks, re the legality of the Trump tariffs. SCOTUS = Supreme Court of the U.S.

* The Case: Learning Resources v. Trump (consolidated with Trump v. V.O.S. Selections).

* The Core Issue: Whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) grants the President the authority to impose tariffs by declaring a national emergency (specifically the 25% duties on Canada and Mexico).

* Oral Arguments: Concluded on November 5, 2025, where SCOTUS Justices expressed significant skepticism regarding the Administration's broad interpretation of IEEPA.

* Current Status: Lower courts previously ruled the tariffs illegal. If SCOTUS upholds those rulings, the U.S. government could face billions in mandatory refunds to importers. The delay suggests a complex, potentially fractured opinion is being written.
