Trump says he told Israel not to retaliate for Iranian strike

Video Overview & Insights

President Trump told several outlets Sunday he is asking Israel not to retaliate after Iran's strikes, hopeful that he can somehow preserve this very fragile ceasefire. Olivia Rinaldi reports.

I don't think Israel will just sit and watch after Iran lobbed missiles at their country. 🤣

Oh, so Israel should just ignore the destruction being caused by Iran? President Trump is not making sense. Forget the "peace deal" - it will never happen with Iran.

If US got bombed and an ally told Trump not to retaliate…would he listen? If Trump did nothing in response to the U.S. being bombed he would be impeached. Right. Your country gets bombed…you must respond. No matter how bad you want a peace deal. You must deal with reality.

And they listened, right? Just a few days ago 47 said he tells Netanyahu what to do and he'll do it.😂😂 As long as bibi is PM, he does have to worry about prosecution. Bowing to trump puts him in serious jeopardy.

Throughout history, God is allowed moments in time for good men to address the evil in the world, especially in the biblical times. Nowhere do we ever hear well? We're going to make a deal. Can't deal with the evil Mr Trump and crew. What are you going to do? Meanwhile, us citizens are paying or the pump getting smaller portions of food paying, paining for crooked politicians etc etc

Add that to the billions we’ve thrown to Israel for getting us into this war. Funny how it’s called a war now when it was passed as a “special operation” to avoid congress getting involved🙄 the American Putin

Why the U.S. is invested in Israel

The U.S. and Israel have been close allies for decades. Reasons often cited include:

Israel is one of America's strongest military and intelligence partners in the Middle East.
The countries cooperate on defense technology, missile defense, cybersecurity, and intelligence sharing.
Many U.S. leaders view Israel as a stable democratic ally in a region that has often been politically unstable.
Domestic politics also matter, many Americans, advocacy groups, and lawmakers strongly support Israel for strategic, cultural, or religious reasons.
Why the U.S. cares about Iran

The U.S. and Iran have had a difficult relationship since the 1979 Iranian Revolution and hostage crisis. Major concerns include:

Iran's nuclear program.
Iran's missile capabilities.
Iran's support for armed groups such as Hezbollah and other regional proxies.
The security of oil shipping routes, especially through the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital to the global economy.

Even Americans who don't follow Middle East politics may feel the effects if conflict disrupts oil supplies and raises fuel prices.

Why the U.S. gets involved at all?

From the perspective of U.S. policymakers, the goals are usually:

Protect allies (including Israel).
Prevent a wider regional war.
Prevent nuclear proliferation.
Protect global trade and energy markets.
Maintain American influence in the region.
Why some Americans question it

Many Americans ask the same thing you're asking. Some believe U.S. involvement is necessary for national security and stability. Others argue the U.S. spends too much money and attention on overseas conflicts and should focus more on problems at home. This debate exists across both major political parties.

So the real answer depends on who you ask:

Supporters say involvement protects U.S. security and economic interests.
Critics say the costs, risks, and foreign entanglements outweigh the benefits.

It's one of the most debated topics in American foreign policy.

We voted for this. It is not just the president moving in. It is the group as a whole. This should have been dealt with when Carter was in office.
