A history documentary on the True Size of a Roman Legion. This is our first episode in the new True Size series which seeks to bring history to life in 3D using Unreal Engine 5. In this episode we cover the organization of a Roman Legion from the soldier to the Contubernium, the Century, the Cohort, and the Legion. Along the way we not only include the troops and their officers but all the slaves, mules, support, staff, and gear which accompanied them. This makes for a much better understanding of the Roman army structure.
With the second in command being an Optio, is that why English slang for a friend is " Oppo" ? Not likely, I know. But does someone know ?
We then put these into context by looking at a Roman army camp, a Roman army on the march, and a Roman army in battle order. This gives the viewer a full 3D history of a legion like never before.

This is an interesting topic. I live in a small town built on the site of the Roman port of Alauna which is located at the SE end of the 25 miles of coastal defences which are part of the Hadrian's Wall complex. This town was an important location for bringing supplies safely to the western end of the wall.

I feel the basic structure is not that different from modern army brigade. Brigade = legion, batallion = cohort, company = century, squad = contubernium.
Though since company is usually bigger than 100 man century, in modern army there is also platoons consisting 4-5 squad (30-40 man).
This structure obviosly varies by the country a lot.

@PaulGualtieri-m6vCaesar explained very well the most important ability of the roman legions. Beside of weapons, discipline and organisation are the not told abilities key. Caesar said, much more battles were won by the shovel and sweat than by steel and blood. The speed of march and the speed of building was in most cases the key factor of the victory. You find this advantages also by Napoleon

@Mr.56GoldtopWhat’s crazy to me is Rome has these 50k+ battles and 10k or more losses while medieval conflicts in comparison whole medieval battles with forces on both sides barely make a single legion
