Released on 8 August 2014 through Ministry of Sound Australia, Freaks is a collaboration between Australian DJ, producer and musician Timmy Trumpet and New Zealand rapper Savage (Demetrius Savelio). The track topped the charts in New Zealand, peaked at number 3 in Australia where it spent 13 consecutive weeks at number one on the Australian dance chart, and charted across France, Belgium, Sweden, Poland and the Netherlands. It is the highest-selling single of all time on Ministry of Sound Australia, has been certified 9× Platinum in Australia and 5× Platinum in New Zealand, and in May 2025 was added to the APRA Billion Streams List — one of the most streamed songs in Australian music history. The video has accumulated over 238 million YouTube views.

Timmy Trumpet (Timothy Jude Smith) is a Sydney-born DJ, producer and musician who began his career as an acclaimed jazz trumpeter before crossing over into electronic music — a background that gives his productions their signature brass-driven sound. Signed to Ministry of Sound in Australia, he established himself as a central figure in the Melbourne Bounce movement alongside Will Sparks and Joel Fletcher, and has charted multiple Beatport number ones. Savage is a South Auckland rapper of Samoan descent and a founding member of New Zealand hip hop group the Deceptikonz. He was the first New Zealand hip hop artist to achieve a platinum-certified single in the United States, with Swing — a track that gained a second life after featuring in the 2007 film Knocked Up. Freaks represented a reunion of the two strands of his career, combining his hip hop roots with the Australian dance music scene he’d become part of through his collaboration with Joel Fletcher.

On its release, Freaks drew immediate support from major DJs including Laidback Luke, R3hab, Borgore, Thomas Gold, TJR and Sander Van Doorn, and W&W created their own edit which Hardwell played at his shows. The pounding beats and massive brass riffs translated from club to festival to radio, making it one of the defining crossover dance records of 2014.

In less than a decade, Timmy Trumpet successfully transgressed from the international stage as an acclaimed jazz musician to the realm of global dance music. Now as a combined DJ/Instrumentalist, he stands as #2 DJ in Australia (inthemix Poll) with a production resume boasting several Beatport #1 releases. Signed to Ministry of Sound in Australia, his last 3 singles have all reached the #1 spot on the ARIA Club chart. Rightfully dubbed ‘the busiest DJ in Australia’, Timmy averages 10 flights a week, juggling over 200 shows per year, including major festivals and international super clubs.

Timmy’s initial idea of live DJ/Trumpeter has proved to be a great success, providing the launching pad for a career in dance music. After landing a contract with legendary house label HedKandi, he toured South Korea’s Mass, Thailand’s Full Moon Party and performed alongside Erick Morillo at Pacha Ibiza.
