Disagree. Drums stand on their own. The idea that technique is boring and songs are fun is a bad attitude. All my students do their exercises and techniques and if they want to learn songs in their range, they have the tools and understanding to do so.

I love the idea of just getting right to playing music, songs. That's all I've ever done. I'm a "bad" student, in ANY class. I just can't learn any other way, other than doing the thing I want to learn. Has it's drawbacks, but works for me, for the most part.

The definition of Fatal is "leading to failure or disaster"...and this mistake in our drumming leads to just that. This is the #1 issue and mistake I have had to address with students over the past few years. Are you working on music or material that is directly related to music you want to learn? We should ALWAYS be working towards the music. I spoke to a drum student just the other day...they had been playing almost a full year and had never learned a song! And they were discouraged, demotivated, bummed out. As they should be! Your first drum lesson should be working towards playing a song. Period. My students in my online drum school learn to grip the stick, play a beat, play a fill, play a song. Each of those short lessons is geared towards conquering that first song. It's a HUGE win!

Learning the drums is not NEAR as challenging if we connect it to MUSIC as soon as possible.

It litterally is my first lesson ๐Ÿ˜‚ im getting an electric drum kit pad today and i might get and actual acoustic drumset for my birthday

If you're just starting out on the drums, I also give a TON of examples of songs that you can play almost right away. There's no better way to learn the drums than to play with music!

great point!

Been playing guitar for 26 years now. I always focused on learning songs and always had fun. In one year I had the basics down and was moving towards complex
Techniques. I always tell people
Itโ€™s better to learn songs than drills. Now Iโ€™m about to learn how to play drums and my only focus is learning how to play Young And Aspiring by Underoath.

Low expert guitarist here, was gifted a full electronic drumset w/amp, looking back on guitar I would have done a LOT different, cost me years of progression, what is the right way to start drumming so that it doesn't turn into a shit show

I agree that a beginning drummer's goal should be to learn how to play along with songs. What I don't agree with are the beats chosen in the songs you've mentioned. I don't think they are good starting points because there is very little consistency between them, which can be confusing, especially for a young kid who is just beginning to learn.

A beginner, especially a young child, usually doesn't yet understand how drumming works or why different songs use different beats. Because of that, they may become confused when one beat is taught for one song but isn't used in many others. It's important to have structure and a solid foundation. Without it, new drummers may struggle to recognize common patterns and understand how drumming works at a fundamental level.

This is exactly how I learned, for me it was Gimme All Your Lovin' by ZZ Top in 1983, it was on MTV every hour of the day, started by air drumming, then on the kit, once I had that down I was off to the races. Great video Stephen

My coordinations sucks so this didnt work for me. Ive been practicing the same basic beat until i pray play it 2min straight at 120bpm. I figure if i build the muscle memory up for that then the adding to it or learning other beats will be easy. I play other instruments tho. Tbh ill be happy if i can play some basic beats so i can jam. Ya know, let others play the bass or guitar. Just trying to be more versatile during the jam seasons.

This dude gets it. Doing paradiddles endlessly is nonsensical if you canโ€™t match tempo creatively on your own to music. When I was young, and learning piano, listening and playing was called โ€œThe Suzuki Methodโ€.

You are absolutely correct. Kids and adults get bored and give up playing the old fashioned way. You want start rocking right away ! ๐Ÿ™‚

Drumeo has made me despise even coming to my little studio, I've only been on it 3 weeks now and they've destroyed any want to use them. I've took lessons for turntableism DJing, guitar a little piano and even a wee bit of harmonica when I was little and never seen anything as EXCRUCIATINGLY boring as what drumeo has. We are doing the slowest drumming to what sounds like our beats from an old Casio keyboard from back in the day that took the old 6D batteries!

Yeah, I gave up after a month of going into my teachers house and TRYING to play his drumset which was a MASSIVE ABSURD RETARDED SUPER RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE DRUM SET.... that shit scared me ๐Ÿ‘€ buuuuut I had to use it, and he would put me on some routines for 1 hour and when I got home, I had to redo that on my stupidly super ridiculously cheap drum set ๐Ÿ˜† and it was horrible. ๐Ÿ˜†

Almost all of these are variations of the fundamental 4/4 snare then bass drum. This is the place to start. Gotta get the fundamentals down before adding any flourishes. Also, itโ€™s important to hear the spaces between the beats. Too many drummers, even accomplished ones, want to do as many rolls as they can. But think of one of the best rock drummers everโ€”Ringo Starr. Heโ€™s all about listening to those spaces rather than doing frantic rolls. Less is more.

Just bought a NRG EDK 1000 Pro kit for our kid and spend a couple of hours in the past week playing as a musician - non drummer (guitarist). It was pain during the first two times until my hands got used to banging with sticks a little. Since then, its pure joy. I didnt do any excercises, straight to playing songs. Im sure it might be useful to do more methodic approach eventually, but I just cant get enough of enjoying the songs I like that are within my range of at least playing through with lots of mistakes :D

As a bass player at church, we had a week where the drummer came down sick. I filled in as drummer but now here I am to figure out how to expand on that. Great video and a great place to start! Thanks a lot!
