I honestly don't think a midfield that has Wharton and Wirtz would work. Wharton is closer to Wirtz than our other midfielders.

It's not even close to what Ireola wants or needs, Szoboszlai is the only mobile player

The rumoured RB signings....Kayoade, Geetruda, etc....are more defensive minded. If Jacquet starts alongside VVD and we have say a Kayoade at RB, is it not possible that the RB doesn't overlap that much and is more likely to shuffle across in possession to turn us into a hybrid back 3 (only in possession). That frees Jacquet up to move forward into the 6 role to progress the ball forward and it also allows the LB to go forward. I'm not saying that would happen but when you watch the Jacquet highlights reels, he usually played in the middle of a back 3 and often moved into midfield to progress or win the ball like a 6 would. It fascinates me who we will focus on this window.....Diomande seems to be the priority and if we want Wharton, well, that can happen anytime as he isn't at the WC now. There are rumours this morning we have made the opening bid for Diomande which means 1. the Player is happy to come to us and 2. Leipzig must be prepared to entertain offers. I'd like us to sign Diomande, Kayoade, Sangare, Wharton and another pacy wide forward. There are rumours about Trincao from SP Lisbon....he's a versatile forward player with a reasonable release clause....a decent option off the bench. I also think we need to look at Schlotterbeck as the Madrid Mafia are sniffing about him. If we see him as VVD's successor, we might need to do it this window so we don't lose out to madrid, AGAIN !!

I have a feeling it might be Wharton as we have profiles of player that are similar to Scott (Dom & Grav). The price they are talking about for Scott is insane so, we might focus on Wharton this window and bring in a lower cost midfielder like Camara or Sangare.

Wharton is absolutely elite at ball progression, and he’s used to taking risks on the ball to play through balls and find the front line in dangerous positions. But it would really require a lot of Grav/Szobo to be the second in the double pivot with him I think. Could do it with a stay at home minded RB though maybe?

I honestly dont think we can get away with another small midfielder. Don't we need a 6 2 / 6 3 fuy with a bit of presence?

JUST SIGN SANGARE AND CAMARA! 2 midfielders who can play but their mobile athletic beasts who can run for days and can DEFEND! Both of them would cost less than these inflated PL midfielders.

What if? Dom plays on the right with Bradley/Frimpong providing the dbl width. Dom can play/drift more inside. Flo likes to drift left, and in turn provides dbl width on the left. Coady likes to drift centrally overlapping with Writz, good because he never passes to his left back. Hopefully we bring in some good challengers to our wings, but I'm calm with some of Jurgen's boys getting a season.

It's too early even know what the team is going to be like yet. This a hell of a long way to go yet.

Let's be real. He has been bailing out the boat ever since he started. Now he has a yacht. It might need a paint job but it's head and tails above a boat that leaks. And he still not only got the boat to shore, its passengers were drinking way past closing and happy.

I think Wharton is like Alonso, and therefore needs his Mascherano. Szobo naturally would take the Gerrard role. Wirtz as a 10 should probably be closer to a false 9, leading the press and feading striker/wingers like Rio and Diomande.

We seen gravenberch in slots first season do exactly what wharton can do but grav could actually move. We need a destroyer in the midfield for when the press is broken or we’re hit on the counter with our fullbacks higher up the pitch

Slots first signing was going to be Zubamendi. Deal agreed but he pulled out on the eleventh hour. The fact is we never went back & addressed that area, it is a glaring issue which probably cost Arne his job.

Wirtz(Jones) and Szobo(Gravenberch) as 8s. Buy a proper 6 like Anderson, Baleba, Camara etc.

i think Iraola can get more out of the players we have, i dont see the point in paying 80m for a player that isnt better than any of the players we have already in midfield, its Joe Allen all over again, if Scott was £35m and was a replacement for Jones id get it but if we get an actual 6 in how does he displace any of the players we have at the moment, even after Gravs poor season i think we will see more from him under Iraola

If we are going to compete for Titles next season, Ireola NEEDS to unlock Wirtz, Isak, Kerkez, and Frimpong to become phenomenal players.

Wirtz and Isak NEED to connect and form a Gerrard and Torres like partnership together.

I struggle to see where Frimpong fits, so Ireola NEEDS to get Frimpong to play a different style than he’s used to. Frimpong is perfect with a 3 at the back and wing back system, Frimpong is 1000% A WING BACK.

So Ireola NEEDS to get Frimpong to become a different style of player.

Hjullmand from Sporting would allow Dom and Grav to make those runs

Szoboszlai & Mac Allister as number 10's brilliant but as number 8's as box to box midfielders don't even match the same qualities or ability as Wijnaldum & Henderson, dunno what was Klopp thinking when he brought both of them

you look at Bournemouth Scott & Adams similar qualities to Wijnaldum & Henderson,

Iraola biggest headache is trying to build that same type of midfield while trying to build the rest of the squad and team.

From what I understand about Iroela he doesn’t play with a “destroyer” or defensive specialist

He plays with two box-to-box types who are defensively responsible. I think that’s why Wharton, Scott and Fernandes are guys being mentioned right now. They are all defensively responsible while also able to push the ball forward and contribute offensively as well.

I also think we should expect to see 8-9 midfielders on the senior team given how aggressively his teams play and how much he rotates the players.

This season will be wild and the best part is no one knows what will happen, the top teams don't even know their teams yet , they still buying.We don't know what City will do , we don't know what Chelsea will do, we don't know what Arsenal will do in this transfer window.Everything is one nice big mystery , love it .

I don't see it as huge praise saying Scott reminds u of Thiago as Liverpool Thiago was awful, he was great for Barca and Bayern but a flop at Liverpool.

It has to be a 2 midfielder summer need a proper 6 if you bring Wharton in but if they don’t grab em I would be fine with a Sangare or Camara they have to take a shot on one of them for the price if they are both £50 million.. if Scott is 80 and Wharton 90-100 and Fernandez 85 gotta be more creative in the market. I would also fancy that RB from Benfica who could stilll qualify for homegrown as well

Rather have Tchouaméni over Wharton, I like him but if he gets pressed and harassed, you can get at him. Tchouaméni would also be good in a scrap and we lack physical intimidation...

We never replaced Fabinho. For me that’s objective number 1. The spine needs to be world class again.

I was big on Wharton after seeing how good he was at Anfield, he looked good in the tackle and I think more aggressive and stronger than maybe given credit. But I do get what Josh is saying, feels like he would need a real destroyer next to him like Camara.
