I follow the results daily. So many short priced horses win these days. The other day at Delaware Park the favorite won every race on the card. I have never seen that before.

Agreed.. but now the late money wipes out exacta values and you can’t really play against public biases anymore bc computers drain all exacta value on the last tote click…

You made some good points. However, if you're betting more than one horse on the under, you're cutting your odds in half for every horse. And if a horse is good enough to come in second, why not win? In my super awesome expert opinion, DD are easier and pay better because you're picking a single winner each race.

If the Quinella is offered at the track, check that pool before you exacta-box. Also, daily doubles and pick 3's are great bets

A lot of sage advice here but telling folks to concentrate on cheap claimers is the single worst piece of horse racing advice ive ever heard.

Racing isnt a sport . its thievery on horseback . drugged horses and jockeys stopping horses . its a minefield . i like it though .

if you’re playing the horses for fun, this information is very good, but it’s targeted to a rare kind of spot so it’s most useful for the professional player who is “working” his side hustle like a part time job and very few horse players are in that category. I’ve made a side hustle living at the track on large show bets, one race done in a perpetual sequence at an aggressive negative progression linking all bets until I got the win then restarting. It is 5:15 my “Joey Knish” sequence, establish a unit amount 1X and bet your most sure Show opportunity in a medium to large sized field on high volume handle days, if lose your next show bet is 3X bet, if lose next bet is 7X. If your best Show choice is 4th or worse in three straight bets, you’re in the wrong business. I’ve won $300 Show bets on races like the Derby (Renegade) & Preakness (Nap Solo) which when the gates opened I was already in the cash line, they were can’t miss Show bets and if you’re in it for the $$ you aren’t in it for the fun. Treat like a job, build your betting bankroll and run it like your own LLC. $300 to show on a horse that pays $3 is still a $150 side hustle profit for the day. Go home deposit the $450 into your side hustle LLC Account and look for your next opportunity.

You can read a hundred books. Listen to 50 experts and playing horse still remains the worlds longest apprenticeship. I will say caw is killing the chances for the average player

I have to disagree with you on betting graded stakes races, take a look at Santa Anita tomorrow, a couple of really good betting races with a medium price horse on top with a couple of medium priced longshots in the exacta, ( I like King of Gosford at 10-1 ML, I/e..) maybe get a $1 exacta upwards of $50, bet $5 or $10, there you go..

@chrisp.9172

Now that the cab's nock every favorite to odds on, and 6-1 down to 3-1 I search for overlays in the exactas, ( I wish they had a TV just dedicated to exotics at the big tracks rather than showing Century mile or something. )Napoleon solo was 11-1 to 10-1 for 6 to 8
hrs. Before the race. I went up to my otb bet, came back , still 10- 1 then 5 minutes before the post, he goes to 9-1 , 8-1 , then finally 7-1 , I finally get a winner at a price, after a super slump, and basically what are hedge fund guys, cost me a $40 to $100 better, about 20%of my winnings..💗🇺🇸

@chrisp.9172

The Daily Doubles are and awesome bet too. The point being that you only have to deal with the track take once. instead of twice with a parlay.

@patrickdebonis6493
@

Pick 5 is the best bet. You have a single takeout usually 15%, spread over 5 races, or 3% a race. That's negligible. If you are good enough to beat the exacta pool at 20% you should be crushing the pick 5's.

I too am an old horse player 50 years of it.What I would tell you is extactas are hard to hit its much easier to hit daily doubles alot of tracks offer one dollar dd every race you can play 3 horses in the first leg and 3 in the second leg for $9.00 it won't always pay as good as ex but you'll win more often.

@DavidLaughlin-x7e

My wife plays supers. Average wins about $2000 a year. Her tickets average $5. This is over the last 40 years. I play exactas Average losses over the last 40 years about$700. Guess you have to find whay works for you. The biggest hindrance to making money at the track is the rake.

@normanfrazin9851

I also have been betting a long time . over 40 years. Can't tell you the number of times I missed tri's or super's and said I should of hammered the exacta and cash nothing!

Line speed can be dangerous but more than one speed horse sets up closer. You need to use win bets to cover yourself.

I’ve played horses since 1979. Pick 4 is a very good bet. Exactas are good and tris. Must know how to read the forms. Know breeding , especially in maidens and first timers. Read workouts.

Many years ago Florida Derby, six horses. Only two with Beyers over 100, one with high 90s, other two low 90's. Took the two best horses and played them against each other and the third horse. An 8$ bet, paid 24$. I bet it ten times, $80. BTW, one horse scratched before going to start, so only 5 horses. One of my top two finished first and third horse second. What happened to the other horse at top. He broke his leg and had to be destroyed. I went home, gave my wife a hundred dollars and each kid $20. When they asked me where this money came from I neighed like a horse. Then we all fell into laughter.

@edtaylor8205

You are betting against the takeout and other wagerers. The lowest takeout with the best return is the win bet. Bet to win.

This guy although just an amateur is on the right track. What he does not mention is field size. Any race with less than 8 horses in it should not be played period. Yes, you can get by with a 7 horse field but keep the bet down to a minimum. These days all tracks have an acute horse shortage. They now stack all their bigger fields in the last 4 races on the card to appease the late pick 4 players. Those are the only races you should bet on. Exactas of course would work the best. You go with 4 friends. You all have 100.00 to bet on the 10 races. Simple. 10.00 a race they say. You drove. They all say step on it we have to make the double. (1st race) You say there is a daily double on every race now except the last one. Hold your horses. The first race is a 2 year old maiden race. No horse has ever run before. We don't care your friends say. Someone has to win it. You think to yourself these clowns are going to go broke by the 7th race. They start out betting 10.00 a race, lose 3 and then increase their bets and their 100.00 is gone after the 6th. Let's go they say to me. We have had enough. One of them though hit something and is even or ahead slightly. He wants to stay and of course I do since I haven't even started betting yet. I waited for the last 4 races and am betting 25.00 a race on exactas. I handicapped starting with the last race first when we got there and only did races 7-10. I am ready. I am fresh. I am prepared. I have all my original bankroll. I will hit one of these last 4 for sure. Probably 2 or 3. I will make money for the day. Actually you could stay home and do this much better because the temptation to bet when you get there is what the track counts on you doing.

Don't make it a habit it will bite you i play the horse for years here and there i
Iike the triple crown horses.

@lorenzosanchez8735

How about P5s and P6s with large carryovers? The effective takeout can get down to single digits. Requires some research and investment to structure a proper ticket(s) but the bang for buck makes it the more attractive, and financially sound, play. In my view.

This is nothing new. The stats say that the best bet in Racing has been the exacta for at least 50 years. So, good on ya for mentioning it, but anyone who has attended the track with any kind of frequency has heard someone like me trumpet this.
However, there is one more (and still obvious) angle that everyone should try: Track your own play. And it's easier than ever today with computer platforms. Look at it seriously. The short advice is: See what bet has worked for you, and keep doing it. Doesn't matter what it is. If you have at least a 3 year history, and one type of bet stands out as the won you win on, keep making that bet. If the stats show that you have zero bets that show a profit, then try exacta wagering only for at least 6 months. See what happens.
One last thing: If you enjoy going to the track, and your losses are manageable, there is no sin in writing it off as entertainment. How much does a night out anywhere cost, anyway?

The late money coming in after the race has started has all but destroyed any chance of a positive R.O.I. when placing straight win bets. That 3:1 horse leaving the gate is now 8:5 or lower when they cross the wire.

I like the way you stressed the importance of lower claiming races it's never easy but as the purses increase the element of consistent handicapping does tend to be a little more difficult
