I do not understand, you very clearly design the box, waveguide and crossover separately from one another. You performed different tasks on each one of these aspects which were completely independent from other design attributes. This is just how speakers are designed….??

I wonder if these would be good for studio monitors for mixing and mastering? I know some people dislike the ported design due to time alignment in studio environments. But not sure if that is an issue.

I’ve printed the glow 4c the other day still waiting on woofer to show up to finish it. I was wondering if there is a better way to have a better crossover that’s pre made. The diy one is cool but I didn’t print it. Trying to find other solutions first

Hey, what a cool video, I really enjoyed watching it! Now I'm really interested in your kit, but currently a bit unsure on pricing. Is there also a way to just buy the 3D print file and plans from you and buy the components separately? Or in other words: what is the cost of the components vs. the files + plans?

This is basically the same workflow as designing an antenna in RF engineering. Amazing how similar physics = similar design philosophy in this case.

DATS V3 is awesome! It pays for itself when you are designing new speakers and need the real data. Especially for someone like me who also uses it on random unbranded woofers that I've collected over the years to make some fun one-off personal builds with.

7:40 wth? I've built probably less speakers than you and I almosy always pick drivers off the TS values...maybe I am a wizard? 😂 7:52 and OBVIOUSLY people like me do this VALIDATE them with sims but, are you really picking a specific driver out of maybe 10,000 options without having at least a SENSE of how each TS variable affects the simulation? Or did you never ever learn what any of the variables mean, anything about their equations, etc? Because it doesn't seem like it.. stop it 😂

Beautiful teaching your journey step by step. I love the approach but must admit I prefer a mix of material. A little old fashioned wooden box with a 3d printed front plate especially with the integrated waveguide would be my way to go. But anyway this video is gold and you effort is really showing. ❤

Incredible video again! I’m on the fence building some. If you ever decide to design a horn-loaded speaker I’ll go for it for sure. I don’t even know if at desktop printer size it’d make sense acoustically, but I always find they look so sick.

1. You learned why simulation is of little use. You have to have deep understanding of the subject instead.
2. Learn to modify the drivers, disassemble, add shorting rings or coils, and assemble back.
3. Move to line sources. They can deal with room acoustics much better if you design them for the specific room. Yes, it is a steep learning curve.

Makes sense you had to extend the waveguide to cover more of the tweeter. There are features in the tweeter which will effect the sound no matter how you change the shape of the guide. So to eliminate those bad sounds, you need to keep them from entering the guide in the first place.

The sound you want to hear is generated on the nose of the tweeter, so that's all you need to allow to enter the guide. Other sounds generated by the flexible support material are unintentional byproducts of the design of the tweeter, and must be eliminated as much as possible.

If you look at the stock waveguide compared to your first prototype, the stock one appears to sit much farther out, exposing much less of the side profile of the tweeter nose, and it also covers more of the support. These were both likely intentional design choices to eliminate exactly the issue you found.

I really wanted to do a hexibase build but I think these are better suited to my wants. I'd love to see a more colorful build sound-wise in the future. Flat is certainly good for a lot but I would love for something more V shaped in response.

So, this video leads in with a brand new way of designing speakers, which boils down to using simulations to save tons of design time instead of prototyping physically over and over again. Then, the author finds out he was lied to by the manufacturer about their thiele small parameters (by more than 40 percent in one case), which meant he had to waste a bunch of time working around those lies in order to get a better result, meaning he had to make more physical prototypes. Then, the author began to realize that the simulation program he was using wasn't adequate at simulating his waveguide design (which looks really cool btw), so he was forced to make over twenty physical prototypes, chopping up his front baffle design with hammer and chisel in a desperate effort to save some filament, resulting in tons of smaller, partial prototypes. The author then goes on a side quest with his measurement mic setup, probably to save his sanity, and the end result is likely a very nice sounding speaker... that ultimately uses a design method that I have seen dozens of speaker builders and designers using for years. That is, they start with simulations, and ultimately are forced to make a few prototypes if they're lucky, or dozens if they're not. The summary I've provided is essentially at twenty two minutes into this video. So, the author had his time wasted from SB Acoustics, and I, admitting my own faults, wasted my own time by being drawn in by a click bait title that was only technically true for the author, but not true in spirit. In other words, this video represented a "new" way of designing speakers for the author, but for me, someone who has read articles and seen the same story of lying speaker manufacturers with bad t/s parameters dozens of times over the years, and programs that don't simulate properly, this is a story that goes back by decades at this point. So, in spirit, I've been lied to as well. This is unfortunate, and made me sad. It also tickled my monkey brain, and now, I don't want these speakers. I suppose it's the fact they now represent being lied to, and ultimately my own failings at being drawn in by click bait, which is itself a symptom of YouTube's algorithm. If anything, I'm going outside now, to touch some grass and enjoy this summer day. If you've made it this far, maybe you'll do the same thing as me and decide not buying a product after being lied to is your jam, or maybe you'll decide that you don't care and you'll reward the author and this lying speaker manufacturer with your money anyway. Regardless, I'm not here to judge, but I did want to give some food for thought. May you all be blessed.
