50 Thosand dollar FTIR, thats wild, at that point just get a mass spectrometer lol, A used FTIR would be able to detect just as well as a brand new one (to a certain extent, obviously the technology has been advanced a good amount in the past 20 years or so, but In my experience with the variety of analytical instruments I operate at work, newer revisions typically just offer more streamlined repairs, software compatibility, compactness, and ease of use. Ive never been able to tell a difference between the results on FTIR's we have bought used compared to new ones within 10 years of manufacturing date from one another, but I suppose its better to offer that reassurance to people that the instrument is accurate).... overall though yeah FTIR is ideal for this usecase, no calibration curves, extractions, or need for skilled chemists to perform the analysis, I'm fairly certain you could train a 5th grader how to perform an analysis on an FTIR in an afternoon, versus an LCMS where I wouldn't trust a highschooler to operate it. so this checks out from an analytical chemists point of view, could be more accurate, but that would cost more and take more time, so its a good trade off for detecting bulk contaminates.
