The Latin alphabet is useless for describing the English language. We're constantly having to use combinations of letters to express single sounds! That's why the Shavian alphabet - or Shaw alphabet - was invented.

It was designed as part of a competition paid for by George Bernard Shaw, via money left in his will. Its 48 characters represent every sound you can think of in the English language. It's more efficient and it's easy on the eye too.

If you want to ascertain how much more efficient Shavian is without doing statistics, run it through a text compression algorithm. The ratio of compression factors will tell you the minimum savings over English (minimum because compression algorithms might be tuned to existing language).

"inconsistent" he says. You don't even need to hear the accent to know that he's not a native English speaker. What he's talking about is what makes it so difficult for people to learn as a second language, but also what makes it so versatile and intuitive to someone who spent their formative years and on learning and practicing it. Once you understand how placing a particular letter in a particular spot in a particular word changes the sound of the other letters and thus the sound of the word, it becomes easier to use different combinations of letters than to memorize a larger alphabet. Also it makes you a better critical thinker by having to infer more from context. But, you know, haters gon' hate.

I know I'm way late replying to this, no idea why the algorithm sent me this video two years later, but I feel like everyone is missing something:

Would this be a useful tool for people learning English for the first time? Efficiency is nice and all, but if the Shavian alphabet was actually adopted, would it make English more accessible to non-native speakers?

Shaw may have been good with letters, but he was rubbish at maths. If you save 100% of your time, it now takes no time at all. What he meant was 50%. He was probably thinking it takes 100% more to use our current alphabet compared with Shavian, but that's not how maths works.

0:57 Introducing Shavian

1:42 George Bernard Shaw

The annoyance, and great loss, of past effort, by adopting the shavian alphabet and spelling, ahead of the traditional one, is, in no way at all any doubling or repetition of our past effort made to learn traditional spelling and writing. The greatest loss, by far, is all the literature and culture that we, after its adoption, soon will not be able to connect to. Most, by far, of our culture is in the language, especially including what has been set down in text.

5:50 Letter names

6:21 Letter shapes & sounds

Iโ€™ll tell it to you straight. The whole idea of Shavian is dumb and impractical. The concept behind recreating a new alphabet for a preexistent language with a functional alphabet is a terrible idea with no merit, even if it sought to correct flaws in our preexistent one. Thatโ€™s not how language works.
Itโ€™s arrogant to even wonder if your own alphabet that you made up could replace the preexistent one, ever. Languages are lived in, and we donโ€™t just rewrite alphabets and change the spelling of every damn word because one guy said he had a better way.

โ€” @davidgeldner2167

9:29 Is it phonetic?

11:26 Accents

To be fully honest, this is a truly terrible idea. Imagining learning a new language simply because your old one went out of style. Thatโ€™s not practical or better, itโ€™s a problem.

โ€” @davidgeldner2167

12:33 Countries & names

13:41 It's more efficient

Youโ€™re wrong, itโ€™s not better. Itโ€™s just more. Itโ€™s not more efficient itโ€™s just simply got more letters. That is not the same thing as being better. In fact, Iโ€™d argue the current alphabet is much better simply because we arenโ€™t forced to learn a new alphabet, a more complicated alphabet, just to write and read the Shavian one. Ours is better simply because it works for us. Yours is worse because it isnโ€™t practical that we all learn it just to switch: itโ€™s a worser option right now by far.

This is useless, every accent would write differently and you couldn't read it. People already read English using the Roman alphabet in their own accent, it doesn't matter. This is just really poor cryptography.

I know this vid is 2 years old, but... How many letters would a "grand shavian" alphabet have? It could include literally every sound made by every tongue, and still be manageable. People learning languages that use different scripts learn new alphabets all the time, it's not like it's hard.

Some of those characters remind me of shorthand. Single strokes for the sounds "nd," "t," "th," "n," "s," and "f" represent the words "and," "to," "the," "in," "is," and "for," respectively.

I just wish we'd do away with all the spelling and grammar rules, and introduce letters for th sh ch and so on. I find grammar trips me all the time. An English teacher annoyed me by saying "the star trek intro, to boldly go where no man has gone before.. should be to go boldly ..." and i told her that Latin sentence structure would allow for that, and it maybe lands with more punch because of the "incorrectness". Or incorectnes if we go by Shavian spelling.

If you simplify the alphabet, you lose connection with the etymology of the words and with it a huge chunk of important cultural heritage, leaving us vulnerable to political subjugation akin to Orwell's Newspeak. It's an ill-considered idea.

The problems arise with pronunciation. I am from California, so I pronounce for as fir, I pronounce egg as aygg, my pronunciation of "let's go to the beach" sounds more like "lits go duh thuh beach."

The reason English is difficult is because itโ€™s not a language. Itโ€™s 4 languages in a trench coat. The alphabet isnโ€™t the problem, the amalgamation is.

Absolutely not. As a dyslexic person, this alphabet is unusable! If you're going to design a new alphabet, WHY would you ever make the letters look so similar to each other? Make them look unique! No letter should look like a horizontally or vertically flipped version of any other letter. This should not be a big ask.
