The WWII Pacific Air War: Annihilating the Japanese Air Force | Rare And Restored Archives In Color
Video Overview & Insights
B-25 Mitchell strafers, skip bombing tactics, and the brutal reality of low-level jungle warfare define the Allied struggle for air supremacy in New Guinea and New Britain. This deep dive explores the radical mechanical innovations and aggressive flight tactics deployed by American and Australian airmen to dismantle the Japanese supply lines during the Second World War.
Given the audited accuracy (or lack thereof) from the ETO with only 20% of total bombs dropped landing within 1,500 feet of the designated target how many fish and palm trees died unnecessarily during WWII????
Experience history like never before, as many parts of the vintage, rare archival footage featured in this script have been fully restored and upscaled. Presented either in native color or meticulously colorized, this combat camera documentation offers an unparalleled look at the mechanical intensity of the Pacific air war.
To combat the unique challenges of dense jungle canopies and shallow coastal waters, standard bombardier aircraft were heavily modified by field mechanics under the direction of the legendary Pappy Gunn. Glass noses were replaced with heavy machine guns, and the B-25G variant was famously equipped with a manually loaded seventy-five millimeter M4 cannon, transforming the aircraft into a flying artillery piece capable of sinking a destroyer from two miles away. You will see these heavily armed warbirds execute skip bombing runs, bouncing ordnance across the water to slam directly into the hulls of enemy transport barges supplying the Lae and Salamaua garrisons.
to hell with all of you who work at hook promise ! Mark Bardon, you rat ! it was your fault all those kids died at that school! You forgot to tell your viewers that there was no police at any of those schools where those kids died !!! We need more assault weapons!!............not less !!!!!!!!!
The film also covers the critical support role of unarmed troop carriers, fondly known as biscuit bombers, which braved dangerous skies to drop rations and medical supplies to ground troops fighting through the impenetrable kunai grass. Furthermore, the documentary captures the massive airborne drop at Nadzab, featuring perfectly coordinated smoke screens and paratrooper deployments that rapidly secured the Markham Valley. From the intricate maintenance on the tarmac to the intense dogfights over Wewak, explore the full spectrum of Fifth Air Force operations.

Thanks for posting, I learned that US /Allied forces captured Lae and Finschhafen (often spelled "Finch Haven") in New Guinea during World War II with a combined strategy of rapid amphibious assaults, close coordination with Australian forces, and intense naval and air bombardments. The ultimate goal was to take control of the Vitiaz and Dampier Straits, neutralize the major Japanese base at Rabaul, and secure stepping stones for the drive toward the Philippines; and it worked. ... US Outsmarted the Japs by skipping over heavily fortified islands in order to seize lightly defended locations that could support the next advance—became known as island hopping. As Japanese strongholds were isolated, defenders were left to weaken from starvation and disease. oh, 🤔... the Australian 9th Division, did the bulk of the jungle fighting on the ground.😪 😢 That's what this is all about. Thanks DroneScapes. 👋

0:21 That A/A crew is right on azimuth. Add a little elevation, fire another burst, and... Those are some big ol' 25-mm rounds incoming. Makes me wonder what brand of forklift those B-25 pilots and crew men preferred whenever they had to haul their massive forged steel balls from A to B.

Pappy Gunn was an amazing mechanic and pilot. His family was captured and held in an internment camp when the Filipinas fell.

00:00:00 Target Rabaul and the Secret Strike Force
This theater was so far from it's supply chain. The 5th AF started with nothing. They assembled A- 20 from crates, no ikea instructions or tools. They improvised, they swapped, they recycled, they stole, sometimes at gunpoint to cut any red tape.
Now, in addition to some P40s, they had bombers.
Pappy Gunn was a pirate. Seeing 18 just delivered B-25s destined for the Dutch and paid in cashin advance. Pappy flew his plane back to base, gotten two dozen pilots to heist these pretty babies. They pulled it off. The 5th AF had their new Commerce Raiders. By time General Kenny arrived to take command of this scratch force, the Raiders were halfway transformed with a nose full of 50 caliber guns.
The General didn't have much to work with at first, but he did have some smart, dedicated airmen and ground crew. They were the core of the new tactical development of low level PRECISION bombing.
Brilliant and innovative. Mast head attacks after staffing the decks of thin skinned vessels.
Skip bombing perfected. Parafrags by the thousands, scattered in the rivetments and hidden jungle canopies.
