I know I'm asking this way too late, but when one person has too many votes, how do you choose which votes are the "extras"? Unless everyone ranked them in the same order, who you choose as the extras might change who gets the extra votes, unless I'm misunderstanding something here.

What if a candidate has a surplus but the voters who voted for that candidate did not put down their secand choice

Question: in the example with the White tigre and the runoff votes going to the pink one (theoretically same party) how do they choose which of the white tigre votes are the "extra" ones to be passed on. After all, say the second preferences are split in the white tigre vote, does that give luck a factor in deciding whose second preference votes get called upon?

Thanks for sharing this, it is a great teaching tool......BUT what international law requires people doing these presentations have annoyingly loud music going in the background while they speak way to quickly and flash stuff across the screen before one really gets time to digest it? If you went to school and the teacher did this you wouldn't really learn much there.
My suggestion...get rid of the music (or turn it way down), speak more slowly like you trying to get people to understand the ideas you are trying to express - and this will eliminate the need for fast flash screens.

How do you determine which votes are unused?
In your two tigers and two gorillas example, perhaps the second choice vote is more mixed between Silverback and Tiger than you would expect. Deciding exactly which votes to transfer under that system would then determine the next winner, as sending 32% to Silverback puts him in the council's 2nd seat instead of Tiger, while 32 to Tiger gives the example shown.

But in reality the leftover votes wouldn't go to a single other candidate. How would you split the votes in reality? Proportionally to the total vote? Would you round the votes or work with decimals?

i tried using their methodology... how the f does 2000 rows and about 100 calculations not finish solving who's representing the act (equivalent to d.c)

I have a question, if the highest voted candidate has some extra votes that overpassed the quota, how will these votes be transferred to the others? Is the calculation of distribution of the extra voted based on the proportion of the second choices of all voters of that candidate?

Who decides which extra votes are reallocated? in reality, the second choice of a candidate may vary quite a bit. depending on which votes you decide to reallocate could swing an election one way or another.

What would happen in a scenario where there is only 1 party you like, and you despise all the others.
Now, the party you voted for (let's call him White Tiger) got 65 percent of the vote, and none wanted purple tiger, even if they prefered purple tiger to the gorillas.
Now, your vote is being transferred to a party you don't like, even though you voted for a winning party.

The problem with the "overflow" of votes is that which 2nd votes move? In the real world not every tiger has a lion as the 2nd vote.

Just realized a major flaw - of the candidate that wins above 33%, how do you decide which voter's second choice is chosen? Randomly would be nice, but ballot counters are bias and may choose the "extra voters" whose second choice allies with their political preferences.

But why not use Condorcet instead? Condorcet considers which candidate would win in each head-to-head scenario (e.g. A x B, A x C and B x C) and will pick the one with most *wins*, and not necessarily the ones with the most votes.
This is only not always true because it can reach a rock-paper-scissors paradox, in which A wins against B, B against C and C against A, in which case a tie breaking method would have to be put in place.
It honestly sounds more objective and straightforward than STV? I would like to hear points in this regard.

One problem with the STV, how do they decide which votes are extra? It's not like everyone who voted for that tiger was willing to be led by the other tiger, nor is it true that the majority wouldn't have accepted that other tiger.

Problem with svt is that then a small group of unknown, non representative monkeys with their own agendas found a party, recruit a very famous and popular tiger, then get elected with the surplus votes., while more representative candidates aren't.

I still have some doubts on how the transfer works. Like, in these examples all the lower candidates votes and extra votes are transferred to 1 of the other candidates, but doesn't make sense for me since I don't think all of these voters have the same 2nd option, right? I am overthinking it? Or do the votes just go to the most voted 2nd option of those especific votes?
