The Streaming Wars
Video Overview & Insights
There are so many streaming services. This video focuses on some of the biggest ones and their evolution in the competitive industry.
It certainly is an impactful platform is Netflix. It’s formerly 20th Century Fox which did own Star Wars before Disney sold the franchise along with both Doug which did own Doug before Disney and Batman as the franchise was before it sold to Warner Bros. 300,00 viewers of Netflix? Goodness!

I feel like this video was for a certain audience. It's missing an important detail:
For reference, the bit rate of a 4K Blu-ray disc is up to 144 Mbps, with additional dedicated hardware for decoding / rendering video to actually come close to deliverying that.
The avererage download rate of quality internet in a developed nation is something around 90 Mbps, with the average streaming provider giving you, what, 5-10 Mbps? And if they know you are streaming, they'll throttle it down to 2-5 Mbps?
The respective video qualities are not even in the same realm. (For those who care.)
A very special thanks to this wonderful group of Patrons:

I've still literally never had a video streaming subscription

These streaming services have been competing for years to gain general population market share dominance. The battle ground has been “average” households where multiple people and multiple generations reside under one roof and watch 2-3 hours of TV per day. This has been important because number of streamers was not as important as number of people on social media discussing your content and giving legs to your IP (organic marketing).
That part of the streaming wars is winding down because people now have their established preferences that are hard to break and those preferences are now spanning several key demographics. The winner here has clearly been Netflix.
However as we see in other industries, the big players are reaching critical mass and growth is harder to achieve without cutting content quality while simultaneously charging more for that lower quality. So now the big players are looking at which small niche streaming services or studios managed to stay afloat to this point and are serving niche customer bases that look different from their existing customers. These are services and studios like Crunchy Roll, Criterion Channel, A24, Janus Films, maybe even things like Nebula and MUBI. These companies will sprint to generate larger user bases in niche categories that appeal to large streaming services to make their offerings more valuable in acquisitions.
Finally you’ve also got to look at evolutions in entertainment hardware that unlock new media interfaces (think Apple Vision Pro) so that they can be the first to create the content that gets consumed on those platforms before they take off. But this is risky because hardware companies like to keep their ecosystems exclusive and you have to hitch your content to the right horse. Think HDDVD vs Blu Ray. Given how ubiquitous and how much access they have to the overall population already I think Apple is poised to take lead here.

I had Disney for three days and it took me three years to get rid of it. Hulu never worked properly. Max was weird -- a lot of nothing. Netflix has the Knives Out series and that's it. But thank youi for mentioning Tubi. They offer such a wide variety FOR FREE it's impossible not to like them. They're my favorite.

If Elon Musk was truly smart and wanted to be loved again he would buy all these different streaming services and offer them all bundeled under one app for one reasonable monthly price with no adds. . he would make everybody happy, make piracy unnecessary, repair his reputation and make billions in the process.

For me, they’re only two that are really worth it. Hulu and Amazon prime. I like how prime I’m able to buy specific movies and have them stay on there plus they have arguably some of the best original projects they’re only rival on that front is Netflix. My only issue with them is they have probably one of the weakest UIs I get crashes and stuff pretty frequently, despite having good Internet. Hulu biggest advantage is variety and live TV. They’ve got a good amount of shows covering all sorts of genres plus they have a lot of Disney content thanks to that buyout. Live TV is also also date ability for me to stream college football games. Is bug plus.

I think what might happen is they're gonna start to merge. I really think Disney did a very bonehead move. They should have stayed with Netflix and have a tab. Disney plus is horrible.

I’ve welcomed streaming as an addition to the show and film market, especially if it acts as a library for shows and films from years ago but I don’t accept it as a replacement. In recent times, the down sides to streaming and the ways that these platforms can be abused just to line executives’ pockets have become more obvious. I’m glad physical media seems to be on the rise again and some seem to be interested in going to the movies more often again. Though in the latter, selectivity is still very much apparent.

I physically own over 2000 movies and tv shows on DVD and blu-ray. I could watch a new movie every single day for over 5 years, some of which are only available physically. I buy all of them from thrift stores and pawn shops, mostly $1 or less. While i dont necessarily suggest this for most people (unless you are really into film like i am), i DO suggest at least purchasing physically copies of your favorite movies and tv shows, because you are never in control of where and when you can watch them.

Too many streaming services..the prices are too high. Streaming was to replace Cable because it was better. Now it's the same as Cable. All this will do is promote pirating.

We cut cable in 2018, moving over to exclusively using streaming. It really was a great move at that time, as they were far less services at that time and it wasn't too hard too hard to figure out what programing was on what services, and being relatively new it was also pretty affordable helping to save us money...Fast forward a few years.

Helllo Jason Duvall here from gta sex, the horniest game trailer I have seen make sense since iI s a British company maybe you have to do a history on rockstar gaming company, but anyways I remember listening to radio and they have a segment where it’s what they watched on streaming and song that goes with it with piss sound, I don’t really care anymore I personally don’t pay. For anything gell I’m Jason I just find a way to watch it for free and I know everyone does that especially me being poorer then hobops or hobocops. But I just don’t care why pay for a service where maybe you will watch a couple of shows and then some shows fall of that there is no reason to watch it. Or pay for it. Just like prohibition people will find other ways to drink beer same could be said for streaming pissing noises

Are we not going to mention Peacock being THE subscription service if you want to watch the Olympics? The UI set up (where you can select by sport) is excellent. If only Olympics video feeds were allowed to stay up forever :’(
Thanks for the video, I appreciate your research as always :D

The streaming wars have been nothing but bad for the consumer. We're going to see a resurgence in piracy the more like cable networks these companies act like. I don't even pay for any services anymore it's so ridiculous. Netflix asked me to pay $20 for the ad-less tier... Meanwhile alot of my favourite shows are leaving the platform. Why am I paying more for less?
