Precious metals like gold, silver, platinum, and rhodium are expensive because they're rare in Earth's crust. But are they rare in the universe? Why is it so hard to make some of the chemical elements? Where do heavy metals come from, anyway? Turns out, we can blame it all on neutron stars and some oddities of the periodic table.

Thank you to the following for helpful discussions:

-----------

1:27 - The catalytic converter (cat) is critical for cleaner air. But it's not perfect, though. For starters, cats have almost zero effect on PM2.5 particulates, which can be very hazardous.

Then, the cat needs to heat up to a hot 300+℃ before it can operate properly. So, for several minutes while each ICE car is started up in the morning, we get unprocessed poisonous toxins out of the car's cold exhaust system. Never be in the garage while your car is warming up.

The cat's chemical operation requires very costly precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium. So the cat is sized to be a minimum size, otherwise its cost would be onerous to the consumer. Therefore, the minimally sized cat gets overwhelmed whenever the car accelerates from a stop or light, or accelerates to merge or pass. We again get unprocessed poisonous toxins out of the car's exhaust system.

The third problem is that the cat deteriorates over time as it suffers harsh ongoing mechanical & thermal stresses, and as it gets caked in particulates

What's worse is that many states and regions have no annual smog check like California has. Therefore, many old vehicles are operating with a minimally functioning catalytic converter.

Lastly, some people remove their cat via a "cat delete" operation. With so many regions having no post-sale checks or annual smog checks, these vehicles can operate with no catalytic converter whatsoever.

Surat Al-Hadid (Chapter 57, "The Iron") in the Quran states that iron was "sent down" (

) and possesses great strength and benefits for humanity (57:25). Modern science supports this by showing that iron formed in outer space via supernova explosions, with meteors subsequently bringing it to Earth, confirming it did not originate on the planet.

Facebook +4

Key Connections Between Surat Al-Hadid and Iron:

"Sent Down" (Anzalna): The phrase suggests an external origin, aligning with scientific findings that iron was delivered to Earth's early crust via meteorites.

Numerical & Scientific Miracles: Surat Al-Hadid is the 57th chapter, and the most stable isotope of iron has a mass number of 57. Furthermore, the Arabic word for iron ("hadid") has an atomic numerical value of 26, matching the atomic number of iron on the periodic table.

Benefits & Strength: The verse highlights iron's "mighty war" (strength/force) and "many benefits" (utility in technology/medicine).

Central Location: The chapter is located in the middle of the Quran (Surah 57 of 114), which correlates to iron being at the center (core) of the Earth.

The verse, “We sent down Iron, in which is (material for) mighty war, as well as many benefits for mankind” (57:25), is often cited to emphasize the divine, scientific, and practical significance of iron in the Quran.

There isnt enough rhodium on the surface of the earth for every catalytic converter to have a couple of grams of it. There is a couple of grams total of platinum group metals total. Depending on year make and model. Some more than others. Palladium is more commonly used as its leaps and bounds easier to work with and right now is cheaper

@

Well, since we can artificially make superheavy transuranic elements, perhaps a possible method exists to create these precious metals as well. We probably need a fusion reactor for that first, though.

wait hang on but how come rhodium is so scarce when there are other heavier elements that cost less?

@Arnikaaa
@

You know it just occurred to me that the reason adding protons makes an atom a different element is because it changes the way the electrons interact. I just kinda subconsciously assumed that adding protons changed the nucleus in some fundamental way. Like you add enough and suddenly those are carbon protons or smth.

Quick correction: Burning anything in air at high enough temperatures produces Nitrogen oxides. This is not unique to gasoline or even hydrocarbons. Even Hydrogen combustion produces Nitrogen oxides. The Nitrogen comes from the air, which is 78% N2. That N2 reacts with Oxygen at temperatures over 1300C.

two atoms of hydrogen make helium
Really, one hydrogen-1 and one hydrogen-2 make one atom of helium-3. Normal hydrogen is hydrogen-1. Normal helium is helium-4. So, really, 4 hydrogen atoms make a helium. But it's complicated so he's simplifying it. See "stellar nucleosynthesis " in Wikipedia.

I’ve spent years chasing answers in documentaries, podcasts, even ancient texts—and none of it hit me the way Erased Divinity book by Dorian Caine did. It’s like it was written for the few who are ready to break the illusion and remember who they really are.

I thought I understood how the world works—until I read Erased Divinity book by Dorian Caine. It felt like someone ripped the blindfold off my eyes and showed me the architecture of control that’s been here for centuries. This isn’t just a book. It’s forbidden awareness in printed form.

also, technetium can be made in similar reactions to noble metals, but all of the technetium that occurred naturally is gone, but new amounts can still be created in stellar nucleosynthesis, same with promethium, neptunium, and (possibly) plutonium

Just a high school theory, can't we remove protons or neutrons from nucleus instead of adding and create or transform the elements inversely to periodic table 👀
