You have an astonishing way to explain perfectly what every element means using only the essencial words and consuming less time. This is a gift for teaching. Most youtubers would took an hour to explain all of that and we still would have doubts and questions. It looks like you were reading a perfect script, but we know you are not reading. Congratulations. Do more. Ever more !

Interesting plug-in! Thanks for this video! Very useful! There is a popular mastering engineer on YouTube who mentioned in a video that we must only produce 1 master and not one per platform. In your video, if I understand correctly, you seem to indicate that it's okay to produce different masters based on the platform, did I understand correctly? I was also thinking this, but are you doing this even today for some artists or did you change your mind about this since? Or maybe I misunderstood too. Just curious.

Another question: does it happen to you that you deliver a perfect master in WAV format to the artist and then when you listen to it on YouTube, Spotify, etc... the song does not sound perfect to your ears because of the various conversions made either by the artist when manipulating / converting the files or because of the conversions made by the platforms?

I just mix it all for 15 LUFS @ -1dbTP. That puts it in the limits for Spotify (-14 +/ 1), Apple Music, iTunes (-16 +/- 1), etc.. SoundCloud? They allow a high number but what are you going to do, keep changing your masters volume LUFS?.

Can you make a video on how to mix and master for Instagram? I think Instagram has a limiter at -3dB but not entirely sure.

thanks bro..have this plugin ,never know it has great gems hidden til i watch ur video..great video

I/m not familiar with other platforms but I think one thing about Spotify is that in order for the loudness compensation to work, the listener has to turn on a certain thing (I forgot what it's called) in the setting/option page, and by default, that thing is off (at least for me when I installed spotify on my phone) meaning that if you play it too safe and don't squash it enough, MOST listeners without the function turned on will perceive your song as way quieter than the other songs they are listening to.

So I'd say it's safer to still try to be as loud as possible on the LUFS meter but without sacrificing too much dynamics and transients, basically finding a perfect balance spot that makes everyone happy. I can usually get it up to -8 dB LUFS without sounding compressed at all, but I've seen ones hitting -4 without so still a lotta tricks in that arena to explore and learn about

I was aware of this plugin through some time but...thats the best explanation about it in the web.Thanx.Tool to buy list!

@rickblackers88
@

It looks like a good tool... But have you tried MLoudnessAnalyzer from Melda? It does almost everything the Levels do, if you understand and can set the meters, and it's free. For bass, I'm using little cool plug-in called Monitoring from Airwindows (also free, but not in AAX unfortunately) and that can give me a good understanding of what is happening in the bass region.

@SAFAMASTR
@

I heard from mastering engineers on facebook that Spotify uses a plugin called ReplayGain to determine loudness. The -14 LUFS thing is actually not confirmed. Yet so many mastering plugins have run with it

@Barncore
@

2:24 You make a reference to 'minus 1 db' (-1.0 db), but you're actually only reducing the ceiling to -0.1 - so actually, 'minus point one'. Important distinction...

This is one thing I don't understand is mastering for different platforms...it all started with MFiT years ago...For example, if the artist is using a service like CD baby or Distrokid (which let's face it, even my 20 year old brother in law JUST getting into music knows and uses distrokid for quickly releasing his stuff). The thing I don't get is, with a distribution service ( at least on cd baby and distrokid) you can only upload 1 file for everything...NOW I must clarify that is is solely based on what i have been told. I have never personally released anything to the masses via a distribution service. I mix it (sometimes master it) and the artist takes it from there. I always tell them "make sure you use the MFiT file for itunes!" but they always tell me they could only upload 1 file.

@ddsrecording
@

Great timing by the way, I've started a home mastering course The interpsample peak is important, not just for the sake of streaming platforms, but in keeping fidelity and quality in your work. I've also learnt that it you can't have too many meters when it comes to mastering

@Bring_MeSunshine

That looks like a great tool, I will definitely check out how much it costs. ;)

I believe you said on other video that you have never had any song turned down in volume, am I right?

Are rapid fire Q&A coming back? 👀

@albertoskrico9412

Hi David. I was late. Just catched the last few minutes. Not sure if you'll see my question from the live chat, so I ask here again. Different versions for different plattforms makes sense, BUT what if you send your song to a Distributor like CD Baby, Tunecore, etc. which accepts only 1 wav file? Is the quietest Version the best?
