Larry always looks a bit taller than his 6’9” listing. Seems at least an inch taller than Magic every time they stand next to each other. Bird is in my top 5 all time. Legend.

I've always wondered if Pat Riley made that comment based on the fact that MJ will do absolutely anything to win, but probably doesn't really give two shits about your life.

Bird or LeBron, career LeBron maybe Kareem is equal, one year - Bird over LeBron. Starting 5, MJ, Bird, Duncan, center? Is harder Shaq, Kareem, Russell, Wilt, and now Joker, all are unique depends on the day — Wilt, power like Shaq but more skills, and maybe Joker at power forward, sorry Tim. That leaves point, Magic or Curry. Neither a true point. Magic really was a point forward and outside shot was questionable. Curry is more a two, or a hybrid, he has Green who is point for GS. I should say Magic, but a better team is Curry. Every position is great passers, lessening the need for Magic, Curry will spread the floor, best shooter ever. Curry, MJ, Bird, Joker, & Wilt. All are hybrids except MJ, he’s just GOAT. Joker at 4, I think is genius. Coach, easy Phil Jackson. All are team players, even Michael, a team that competes with each other not scoring but who had the most assists. MJ played point the Collins’s last year, numbers like Magic. Defense is probably the weakest part, but Curry, Bird, Joker play great team defense. MJ one of the best defenders ever. He has won defensive player of the year. Who takes the last shot, MJ will pass to an open Bird or Curry, this is Jackson’s problem. Don’t really expect close games.

As a kid, I despised Bird for beating the 76ers. Years later, I had respect for Bird for being such a disruptive and consummately skilled force.

I was the night security guard at the Hellenec College where the Celtics practiced 1983-84. While I went to college.
Saw them play a lot. Unfortunately, I was not into basketball at the time, so I paid little attention.
Also, I worked for 3 years just before as a valet parker at a very swanky business mens club, and frequently drove Red Aurbach around the Back Bay in his light green Chevy Caprice Classic station wagon.

Youth is wasted on the young.... I didn't pay much attention to any of it.

I don't watch any Celtics/Bird videos after the '86 season. Seems like it was all downhill after that. They had that huge heartbreaker in '87 to the Lakers. They never had another championship with Bird after '86.

i see a lot of Bird VS Jordan in every Bird video on youtube.

the simple fact is that, although they did face each other plenty, PEAK bird and PEAK jordan never faced each other, so its tough to compare them straight up.

Bird was at his peak from '81-'86 (injuries derailed him after '88). I'd say MJ was at his peak from '92-'97 (minus "retirement" of course) once he had talent around him and learned how to facilitate and improved his mid-range shooting.

rather than focus on the 1 on 1 matchup, i think the more fun question to ask is who would win a 7 game series between the '86 Celtics and '96 Bulls!!!????!!!???

both are considered among the best teams ever assembled, and they were close enough in era to match up well.

The '86 Celtics were probably one of the best passing (29 assist per game) and most disciplined teams ever, with the mental toughness and confidence of their leader, Larry Legend.

The '96 Bulls were a great defensive and rebounding team that featured the famous "Triangle Offense" which, coupled with Jordan's explosiveness, was dominant when clicking.

Ultimately, this fantasy matchup is one of the most fun to imagine IMO. I believe it would've come down to health and a few timely possessions, clutch shooting, etc. Both teams were deep and well-rounded.

Check it out:

PG: Dennis Johnson VS Ron Harper

SG: Danny Ainge VS Jordan

SF: Larry VS Pippen

PF: Kevin McHale VS Rodman

C: Robert Parish VS Longley

6th man: Bill Walton VS Toni Kukoc

For you youngsters who only have old Youtube VHS clips to see the 86 Celts, let me share some insights...

Although Scottie Pippen was a great defender, Larry Bird often TORCHED Pippen in direct matchups. Bird was 6'9 and his release was way above his head. on top of that, he had a killer back-to-the-basket post up back shoulder fade away that Pippen struggled to stop even when Larry was playing hurt late in his career in his mid 30s.

so then you say, what about putting Rodman on Bird?

HAHAHAHA

go look up videos of Bird VS Rodman. Bird used to literally play BETTER when they put "the Worm" on him! lol

Now, the biggest advantage the Bulls would have is obviously MJ. if these teams squared off, both DJ and Ainge would take turns guarding MJ, often throwing double teams on him to force the very mediocre Ron Harper to get more involved. Don't get me wrong, Harper did his job well, but he was by no means an offensive threat and some would argue that PGs like Paxson and BJ Armstrong were better compliments to Jordan due to their 3 point shooting. Harper's size was his only real asset and Phil Jackson loved having big PGs.

in real life, Ainge guarded Jordan quite a bit throughout the late 80s and 90s. Ainge was on the Phoenix Suns when Barkley led them against the Bulls in early 90s. while Jordan was obviously superior and won the matchup, both Ainge and DJ were at least competent Guards with the size (6'4/6'3 respectively) to contain MJ at times.

The biggest advantage the Celts have on paper is probably the Center matchup. Parish was FAR superior to Longley in every single aspect of the game. "The Chief" was capable of posting up against just about anyone, and had a consistent, arching "rainbow" turnaround that served as a 3rd offensive weapon after Bird and McHale who were both excellent at having the offense run thru them.

The beauty of Parish was that he seemed to elevate his game when the Celts needed it most, like a reserved bullet to fire as needed. I think the 4 headed-Rebound monster of Parish (7'0) -McHale (6'10) -Walton (6'10) -Bird (6'9) would negate whatever rebounding Rodman offered, while all but cancelling out Longley all together. Pippen and Jordan were both great rebounders for wingmen, but Pippen in particular would have to play at a very high level for the Bulls to win a 7 game series VS the Celts imo.

for real life stats, here's how these two teams matchup

SCORING = Celtics scored more with 114 ppg vs Bulls 105

REBOUNDS = Celtics win with 47 RPG to Bulls 45

ASSISTS = Celtics win with 29 APG to Bulls 25

STEALS = BULLS win with 9.1 SPG to the Celts 7.7

TURNOVERS = Bulls win with 1.5 less TO per game

FG% = Celtics win again, 50.6% to 47.8%

3p% = Bulls win with 40% to Celts 34%

FT% = Celtics win by almost 4% advantage

OVERALL - i think the Celtics win with a superior front court, inside scoring. The Bulls make every game a battle, but ultimately Jordan has to carry too much of the scoring and the Celts pick on guys like Longley and Rodman in the post to cause foul trouble and get to the line where they slow the game and their half court offense is the difference.

Benson was a SOPHOMORE, in September, ‘74, when Larry was a freshman, at IU, but, apparently, HITCHHIKED, back, home, after ~3 weeks; he was in the same dorm as Benson, May, Wilkerson, Buckner, Tim McVay (Sean’s dad), & ME (Tim was in one of the rooms next to mine). Jimmy Wisman was Larry’s roommate (both were freshmen). Rumor was that Benson “boressed” Larry, during a preseason team practice scrimmage, which, apparently, REALLY, irritated Larry, so, he decided to get REVENGE, mercilessly, because of that!!!!
