The meter in this song is genius from a narrative point. You have a guy who has just gotten done from a stressful day at work, and he's trying to mentally unwind. Each time an eighth note is added to the meter, the easier it is for the narrator to air out the thoughts in time. This eventually leads to 4/4, which is the most common time signature in western music, conveying a sense of normalcy. Then, with the realization that something wrong is happening, the meter changes changes to a triplet feel to convey the sudden sense of adrenaline kicking in. And finally, we have that meter shifting again - but this time, it conveys a sense of stress rising as the narrator is struggling to reach the end: his old body can't make it in time, combined with time feeling like it's slowing down due to anxiety of finding out about the inevitable conclusion of what happened.

Not sure if all of that is 100% intentional; but that's why the song is a masterpiece: rather than being technical just to pander to the musically-pretentious (respectively... since I'm one of those jerks lol), it makes sense lyrically and narratively as well.

Great technical rappers who storytell at a high level like Andre, Kendrick, Black Thought, MF DOOM, Eminem all do their thing, but this was SO fucking clean. I've yet to find anything more clear and perfectly delivered, telling such a nuanced story as efficiently as this.

Notice that the crash cymbal is there every time the time signature changes to help the listener follow along. Really nice touch in my opinion.

One of the weirdest things about this song to me is that the 4/4, four on the floor beats are the hardest for me to count and keep track of the 1 on. The 5 and 7 are easy, but the common time is super jarring.

Seeing the visual explanation (and then reading the transcript on your main channel, and watching Yogev Gabay's deconstruction as well) is phenomenal, and makes me appreciate clipping. more than I already did, so absolutely thanks for that. I didn't think I COULD appreciate them more than I already did (my initial love, and still greatest, is the plethora of references they make, especially in Air'em Out from the Hugo nominated album Splendor & Misery, to various authors (I rarely find fellow sci-fi fans who've read M. John Harrison, much less see a musical act reference him like clipping. did in that song)).

I will also mention that William Hutson, of clipping. has a Ph.D in theatre and performance studies with a focus on experimental music, which probably helps to inform the time signature fuckery and overall complexity :D
