I think these suggestions are useful only when the workplace is healthy enough to recognize value.

I did all of this. I asked what the company needed, how I could add more value, how I could make my manager’s work easier. I brought solutions, documented my work, started earlier, stayed later, and built an administrative structure that did not exist before.

After 12 years, I manage the administration of five companies alone. There is no real team, no effective backup, and when I am absent the work stops or piles up. Yet when I ask for recognition, the answer is basically: “You are just doing your job.”

That is the part these kinds of career suggestions often miss. In some companies, becoming indispensable does not lead to recognition. It leads to more work, more pressure, and more denial. If you solve problems before they explode, nobody sees them. If you stop solving them, you become the problem.

There is also a power issue. Sometimes the employer understands your value perfectly well, but recognizing it would mean admitting that your role, level, and pay no longer match the responsibilities you carry.

And at a certain age, walking away is not always a simple option. The job market may treat experience as a cost, not as value. So you stay, not because you do not know your worth, but because the system gives you very few safe exits.

So yes, these suggestions can work. But only where value is genuinely negotiable. In dysfunctional workplaces, the problem is not that you failed to communicate your value. Sometimes the value is clear. They just do not want to recognize it.

mel, you should absolutely not be expecting your employees to come in early and stay late. they have a contract that defines how much time they work and how much they get paid. if they work more than that you are under paying them. this is awful to hear from a boss.

Standing out is not my problem. I stand out naturally for some reason cause people always look at me first when I walk into a room and ask me lots of questions if I look a slightly friendly at work, so everyone observes me, my actions (I’m a young female at a corporate). The problem is I stand out too much and people expect a lot from me.

I was friendly, communicative, extremely hard working, amazing feedbacks from everybody, everything delivered on time with the highest quality, protected my team, took over new taks, always respectful and positive, announcing what I achieved....and only 1 person had true devotion towards me respecting my hard work and support for him. The other direct leader just used me, 0 real devotion or emotional attachment towards me, only a facade approval, but when the push came to shove 0 true help, she helped only those who spent most of their time interracting with her instead of work. Probably saw me as competition even if I never was one.

Slightly disagree that this is a justified approach. "Start early, finish late... You're invaluable". This kind of thinking would promote such a toxic workplace.

Employees shouldn't have this pressure - they can go above and beyond in their role without doing things like unpaid overtime and sucking up to their boss. The job market is in the employers favour, and so they CAN work staff to the bone while paying them the bare minimum. The responsibility for fair salaries should be on employers and managers, not its employees. Also, in my experience, people who go above and beyond are massively taken advantage of. I would rather we teach managers how to be better managers.

Professor Brooks' advice on 'reframing anxiety as excitement' is a total game-changer! 🤯 We spend so much energy trying to 'calm down' (which never works), but shifting that high arousal into excitement is such a brilliant, actionable tool for confidence.

I also loved the '2 Professional, 2 Personal' framework for the 'Tell me about yourself' question. It instantly adds depth and humanity to a standard interview answer. And the reminder that negotiation isn't a battle, it's a co-created dialogue to solve a problem together—that perspective shift alone is worth a million dollars. Thank you, Mel and Alison!

Great show. I find myself avoiding question about myself in conversations with people because my past profession makes people just ask questions. As a result, I feel that they are only focused on me and I feel bad because the conversation just revolves around me. It become difficult to redirect the conversation. I was in the Navy Special Operations.
