The Most Addictive Sticky Braised Chinese Pork Belly Recipe Ever!

Video Overview & Insights

Today's recipe will be one of the most delicious dishes to add to your cooking list. It's Chinese sticky braised pork belly (Hong Shao Rou 红烧肉) and is super addictive! This tender, juicy and savory pork belly is served over steam rice and will change your home cooking game forever. This recipe calls for 1 hour of braising the pork belly in addition to additional 15 minutes of precooking and another 15 minutes of reducing the liquid afterwards. The total cooking time is around 1 and 1/2 hour. Garnish with green onion and enjoy!

Great thank you

— @patcunningham1634

3 tbsp brown sugar or rock sugar

3 tbsp light sodium soy sauce (do not use regular sodium. It will be too salty)

What about the stock of the boiled meat

Is it necessary to add wine , in India i ll not get that wine

— @strnaium4285

— @mac772

1 tbsp corn starch water

Green onion to garnish

I’ve been watching Korean shows on Netflix and love it. Because they show a lot of foods, love it, I learned about pork belly which I never had. It looks so good I am cooking it now. Thank you for this recipe. How long is the boiling of PB the first time? I just did 5 minutes and now 1 hour for the second time

Pretty similar to how I make mine -- looks delish!
Your pot: carbon steel? Who makes it? It's a perfect size for home use.

I definitely like the way you cooked it it was really good but you're right I am not a fan of licorice taste especially not black licorice and when I was a kid there was a little boy who used to eat Licorice and he would show his teeth and they would be all black and I tried some and it just made me sick so I I really don't know can I leave that out please let me know that's an optional choice everything else with the pretty darn good

I tried making pork belly for the first time following your recipe fully. And it was fantastic! The only thing I will do differently next time is cut the pork slightly larger than 1 inch. I like bigger chunks, just my preference. Your video is the best I have found on the step by step guidance. Thank you!

Does the star anise make it taste like liquorice? I want to make this for my kids and they do not like liquorice whatsoever.

@moniquejacobsen2683

One tip if substituting brown sugar for the rock sugar: the brown sugar (often/usually?) contains molasses. If so, adjust your heat down (IIRC) as the molasses can scorch/burn rather quickly.
N.B. It's been years since I've used molasses in this way, so fact-check me on this.
