Rising unemployment, increased military spending, and a decline in living standards for most people, including the middle class: the description fits both the 1930s and the 2020s. In the 1930s, it was a situation that morphed into the destruction and horror of the Second World War.

On Downstream with Aaron Bastani this week is Clara Mattei, professor of economics at the University of Tulsa, and author of ‘Escape From Capitalism: Economics Is Political and Other Liberating Truths’. Mattei’s PhD was on the relationship between austerity and fascism in inter-war Italy, and her book is a comparative study of Britain and Italy in that period.

The military economy you couldn't make it up how feral we still are as a human race.We love to destroy and kill. The US is a prime example. The ecomomy is designed for the ruling class and we get the left overs.

— @foppo100

What, they ask, is the relationship between austerity and fascism – both then and now? Is capitalism a ‘natural fact’, as its proponents would have you believe, or a contingent set of affairs designed and propped up by governments? And if capitalism is in fact a choice, how can we go about building an alternative?

00:00 Intro

Clara is incredible. An intellectual powerhouse:

Fair play for Aaron for the interview. He’s a great host.

As the years go by and the more I see him, the more I see him punch down, punch left. The more I see him as a liberal? He often speaks poorly of the most destitute in society seemingly oblivious to the fact they are victims of the system. The system is the issue. I find it fascinating the position he takes, particularly as he regularly self proclaims to be a Marxist a communist and socialist.

The lies of mainstream economics are meticulously guarded by the Church of Economism. The subject of my PhD thesis was “Why does mainstream economics ignore ecology?” at the University of Corsica, France. I completed all my PhD requirements and submitted my thesis in February 2021. Result: my work was excommunicated from the Church of Economism—the academy of mainstream economics—without giving me the chance to defend my thesis. You may see my related blog article: Preface of my book “Ecological Ignorance in Mainstream Economics”. My PhD thesis can be downloaded as pdf on this page.

FIXING FINANCIALISM NOT CAPITALISM:

How to fix the problem of financialism

We must choose to fix the correct problem: You don’t conflate Capitalism(Rule of law – regulation) with Financialism(Absence of Rule of Law – regulation). Fixing financialism is easy. fixing capitalism is not possible. It’s impossible. Financialism is to capitalism as socialism is to capitalism: they are equally destructive

The problem is one of measuring balance sheets vs income statements of the state. (a) measure everything, (b) definancialize (c) organize an economy by competency not by wishful thinking.

There exist a simple set of fundamental laws of competency, incentive, and measurement. Fundamentally these five rules are the levers of political economy:

• You choose either arbitrary rule by man and depend on credentialed or political competency, or rule of law, sovereignty, property, reciprocity, truth, duty, and markets, and depended on demonstrated competency

• You choose whether to use the state as the principle venture capitalist and socialize maximum gains at the cost of low returns on capital and high corruption, or you use the market as the principle venture capitalist and maximize the privatization of gains limiting corruption, or you choose something in the middle.

• You choose whether the state maximizes taxation from private performance, or maximizes returns from state investment – dividing the responsibility for capital formation between the state (long term) and the private sector (short term).

• You choose to fully account for all capital by fully accounting for costs, or you choose to account only for income (velocity) without accounting for capital, or you choose only to account for condition without accounting for income or capital.

The optimum political economy is an intermixed (not mixed) economy of distribution of labor between state and private sector, separation of the monetary flow system into citizen consumption, zero interest from the treasury, liquidity distributed directly to consumers, and business credit outside the state. And to ‘gut’ the financial sector by moving it into the state, so that returns on state liquidity are used for redistribution by the state, while at the same time as maximizing national competition in international markets.

Now, everyone will hate the truth, but the national socialists solved the problem as is china today.

a) What would happen if reserves were required to correspond to the liquidation value of the collateralized assets?
(b) What would happen if an asset could only be collateralized once?
(c) What would happen if credit expansion must come from the treasury, not from expansion?

(d) what would happen if consumer loans were directly issued (statistically) at zero interest for durable goods?
(e) what would happen if the treasury provided banking for the 'bankless'?
(f) What would happen if liquidity was delivered directly to consumers instead of banks?

(g) What would happen if we nationalized all health care, insurance, pensions, and college debts, converting to the Singapore model?
(h) What if we re-created the Work Progress Administration in each state? For the sole purpose of the beautification of the commons
We know

I got a little response to this thread but not as much as I'd expect.
The point here is that the treasury would benefit from gains, while the banks and investors would pay for losses, which provide the state with revenues earned instead of taxes, and end socialization of losses.

The market correct itself so no financial crises the mistakes are not done. This was the case before we lefted the gold

Economy 101:

A mixed economy See Definition Attached An Intermixed Economy(as I use the term) refers to the state acting as a strategic venture capitalist(source of credit)with profits returned to the state instead of the financial sector and consumer credit provided by the state

2. An INTERMIXED economy solves the problem of malincentives in government and private sector, ends rent seeking on the population by both state and financial sector, reduces taxation;guts the globalist financial sector, restores national sovereignty, maximizing returns on capital

3. This effectively makes ALL capital returns in the private sector and reduces the state to venture capitalist in those areas the private sector is unable (unwilling) to risk because of uncertainty, risk, and window for needed returns

4. IOW democratic countries are not capable of making these decisions if it's possible to pander to the ignorance of the population for preservation of political influence.

DEfinancialization of the financial system:

There is no reason we pay interest on consumer loans (and every reason we pay it on business and industrial loans). By nationalizing mastercard, and issuing one every legal and fully integrated citizen, we can distribute liquidity (increase the money supply) by direct redistribution to the citizenry (in which case our homes would all be paid for because of the last recession), and consumer loans can be provided directly from the treasury.

Furthermore, by professionalizing ‘banking’ (basically requiring series 7 for issuing loans via the treasury, and licensing as we do cpa’s), we can eliminate consumer interest, and cut payment periods in half or to one third. Additionally we make universities carry the zero interest loans on behalf of any student, and to obtain payment as a payroll deduction over a period of no more than ten years. This combination will mean that after about 15 years, the first time home owner will own his home free and clear, and the universities will no longer be able to offer junk degrees.

I won’t go into the various extraordinary (wonderful) other consequences but this will restore the american people’s way of life and destroy the predatory financial, academic, and government sectors. There will be no other way to profit than the silicon valley (monarchy) model of investment in research, development, and industry. Financialism will be destroyed forever. 1) Massive economic, financial, retirement, and educational reforms that restore the laboring, working, and middle classes, to the primacy of policy, while gutting the world financial elites, Washington politicians, and media.

This will make single income families possible again. And will end the genetic destruction of our people through abuse of tax, finance and credit. It will eliminate interests on consumer goods. For working people, it will all but eliminate federal taxes. It includes regular distributions of liquidity (money) direct to consumers bank accounts to regulate the economy cutting out the banking system. You will pay for a house in 12 years or so

The state at the behalf of the people is due all consumer interest and all non state consumer interest is parasitism and predation upon the people at

What do you think should be done if you have a hole in your roof? Ask the federal government to send in slaves? Negotiating with a roofer to put the roof on working for a profit is much more civilized. Why should he not be allowed to exploit his personal labor for a profit?

Such a crock! Socialism has failed everywhere everytime. The only difference in facism and communism is ownership! This woman is preaching a failed ideaology somewhat relevant 180yrs ago in a different time, different place and totally different socio/economic structure. Totally ignorant of history and fact! Capitolism has always worked for the people, socialism has always failed it's people! The only danger to capitolism is socialist policies that create massive government spending/waste/fraud, overtaxing the population decreasing their ability to build wealth.

How did you get to the point whereby you're using funding for getting SEND children into school & educating them as an example of wasteful state spending! FFS! This culture & society as sick & disgusting beyond reason. Neo fascism is not a threat its already here again now. God help us! 🙈😳🤬

@andyc1749
@

She overstates the scissors. The dialectic between the superstructure and the base is just that - a dialectic. Struggles in the superstructure over hours and pay can redistribute downward wealth, income, and social power as well as lead to gains in labor's share of GDP via a non-self-financed social wage. There's an ebb and flow based on the state of class struggle.

We are entering a period of increased class consciousness, which ties into one of the points in the video - the rise of fascist movements, which is another soft point in the traditional Marxian analysis, ie, nationalism being another force available to the capitalist ruling class to maintain its rule.

It's nice to hear she has a job in the US. When I was trained as an economist in the 1990s markets were triumphant and this kind of analysis was a career non-starter.

A more balanced critique would be that mainstream economics is not a lie, but neither is it infallible. It is a framework that explains many aspects of economic reality reasonably well, while leaving room for debate about its assumptions, limitations, and policy implications. The strongest criticisms tend to argue not that economics is fraudulent, but that it should incorporate a broader range of perspectives and place greater emphasis on empirical evidence, institutional realities, and human behavior.

Once you understand what is being said here you can see the narrative coming up: a surplus of valuless people, and the push for drastic population decease.

Also, regressively most of the government waste discussion was to push the public works into a few cocporations able to comit to large works, limiting competitive markets and setting the grounds for those same few corporations to dictate costs of work, robbing tax payers more than the savinging they saod theyd provide. It is a common marketplace manipulation technique
