The Knight Duel | realistic, non-choreographed medieval combat

Video Overview & Insights

Knight on horseback: Arne Koets ( https://www.youtube.com/@airnt )

The lance hit my visor directly on my left eye. A spear-tipped war lance would have pierced the visor and my skull. The lance we used had 3 steel spikes, so the tip bit into my visor but didn't penetrate it. The lance itself was a whole tree 3.5 meters long.

Knight on foot: Dequitem ( https://www.youtube.com/@dequitem )
Men-at-arms on horseback: Katja Bergh
Squire in red: Martin Kuhlmann
Squire in blue: Jonas Schwetheim
Cameraman: Lukas Alberter

Arne Koets is probably a real knight, he is a full jouster, harness fencer, castle owner and of course an exelent horseman. We recorded this duel infront of the german castle Brandenburg in winter. There was a thick layer of ice on the meadow, so luckily for me, Arne's horse couldn't go into a stretched canter. The lance consists of a complete 4 metre long tree with a three-pronged steel tip at the end. A war lance with a spear blade would have burst through my visor and split my skull through my left eye. However, the three-pronged tip was stopped by my 3 millimetre titanium visor and the lance broke as it knocked me over. Even though I was able to land good hits with the sword at the beginning of the foot combat and would definitely have critically injured Arne if the sword had been sharp, he placed his dagger right under my chest plate in the melee and forced me to bend forwards and was thus able to bring me to the ground.

Double breastplate double the swag. Taking on a charguing horse full on without a shield or pavise is fucking nuts. Con dos cojones si señor.

Какая это нахер дуэль?! Дуэль подразумевает поединок на равном оружии, в равных условиях, а не так как здесь, где один на коне, а другой пеший!

Once opponents start grappling, would it be a good strategy to try to get your opponent's rondel or dagger and throw it away?

лажа от начала и до конца. зачем принимать удар, после реального удара пеший не поднялся бы, уклониться и ударить коня.

Imagine on how strong warriors were back then, it takes a lot of strength and endurance to carry that amount of weight on you.

realistic???
Where are blood?

@MerkMD

The knight who died messed up by not carrying his dagger when wrestling him down, due to his size advantage, he could have overpowered him + with a few leg stabs he got with his dagger, making the opponent more weak with leg control. had he still had this dagger while he wrestled him down, he could have landed a clean leg shots and/or a face shot.

Is he tackles like an idiot on purpose to lose?

Taking out a knight in full hand-crafted armor and getting to sell it for gold is probably like the modern equivalent of robbing someone at lancepoint for their C8 Corvette

I don't quite understand the terms of a duel where one knight begins with an overwhelming advantage. Or how a knight who won a duel conducted on such terms could ever look anyone in the face again. As is said by dequitem, the lance could have pierced the helmet and killed the man on foot, if it had a spear tip. Only thing I can imagine is, the knight on horseback didn't want to duel, and the knight on foot granted him this advantage to force the duel, over some mortal insult--and man, that would be a really dark ending.

Points for the raven croaking in the background, though was that a real raven that was happened to be there at the time of filming?
