In this history documentary we bring to life the insane scale of a Roman Army on the March! We begin with the basic marching rates for individual soldiers to establish a baseline for our analysis. We then calculate the true size of a Roman Army made up of four legions and its auxiliaries. These are then placed four men across and arranged end to end to calculate their maximum length of over 25 kilometers. However this is just part of the story.

As we know history is a bold face lie. I ask those who believe how and what did 10,000 matching soldiers eat for months on the road? How about1,000 even.its not logical to believe there’s enough food to feed those many men for that long. I say impossible! Orations in WW2 and WW1 was trench fighting because of the lack of food on long marches. Think THINK GUYS DONT BE FOOLS

We then cover the logistics of actually moving a force of this size from point A to point B. This is done by simulating a 24 hour cycle of a Roman army on the march. The result is a stunning 3D rendering in Unreal Engine 5 of what such a monstrously large force would have looked like. This hopefully gives you a better appreciation for the mechanics of ancient armies and how disasters such as the Battle of Teutoburg Forest could have unfolded.

I sincerely thank you for your efforts in putting in perspective what has been (intermittently) on my mind for decades. I lacked the knowledge that you have provided to come to some type of conclusion of how the Romans achieved these monumental expeditions. Absolutely amazing!! Too bad no documentary or video game engine really shows the true valli design of a Roman marching camp — the ditch and earthen rampart crowned with soldiers’ portable stakes. What we usually see instead are the static trunk palisades of long-term castella, which misrepresents how Roman armies actually fortified themselves every single night.

I think this system was a punch in the balls for the tribunes organizing the armies marching orders and planning..

I beleive gross movements were made through longterm logistic bases already settled.

This kind of movements were made only on campaigning in foreign/waring provinces, or when going to battle.

and the armies must have taken diferent routes and were moved separated in such a dimension that there were no safety issues for an ambush, since they were always a help dispatch ride away from a scout from other moving roman armies.

This ensured small enough "snake" that they can still be mobile but not fragile to ambushes. And it was dificult feeding and providing drink to all the man and beasts of burden and cavalry, so the big 4-8 legion armies were broken up into legion sized pieces.. And its easier to keep and store the materials.

Imagine missing diferent legions on the same camp, and both legions have a 1st cohort, and a 2nd, 3rd, 4th cohort and everything is double...

And mistakes can be made and materials or tools can be taken by mistake..

What makes sense is that these movements were rare events. And were not the norm of how the legions moved.

Important question: 23:20 You say 'around 10:30am all the scouts have arrived' at the new camp..

Is this 10:30am on the next day? Around 28 hours after they left the previous camp? Or is it 10:30am the same day, meaning they have only been marching for around 4 hours. Doing all of this for a measly 4 hours of progression seems like a waste. Marching for 24+ hours straight seems like it would make much more sense.

I asked google and it says that it was every day. So they only progressed about 4-5 hours at a time and then set up the new camp. I guess that answers the question. Personally, i would hate a schedule like that that forced me to be up and working every day with the longest period of rest around 8 hours or so. Longer shifts and much longer rest periods are preferable to me personally. At least they knew that more rest than work is more efficient when it comes to sustainability. Sled dogs rest something like 70% of the time to reach their peak time performance for long endurance marathons.

A very good approximation of a legionary marching camp in ideal circumstances based on known evidence. In reality there would have been some variation based on troop numbers, weather, terrain, tactical considerations etc

amazing work. the foraging part would have gained a lot of my attention, like quantifying the food required and thus the amount of people assigned to the task and the time needed to gather such quantities. also what proportion of consumed food was carried by the baggage train and what was sourced locally. anyway mayube for a future video? thanks for the video!

I did 600km walk along Croatian coastline, I confirm you walk from 30km up to 50km in a day. I agree you could push to 70km in perfect weather perfect terrain perfect mood. I also gave myself the challenge on how much km I do in 24h straight, wich was around 110km, again, I chose the perfect day and region for that. I suspect people who do the Compostelle trail average more around 25-35km per day.
