now we have 18 year olds that dont know what 3x3x3 or "name 2 countries bordering the US" that can vote.

I love how they just passed over the fact that the revolutionary war where we were fighting England no one could vote that was concept created by white man so they can can add soldiers to their ranks to fight the war how interesting they just passed that over

This just proves I'll pick and choose what you want to teach don't want to teach real history the only way men get the right to vote is through war while women had to do was March street down the street

Voting Rights has been the a problem since the very foundation of Democracy in Ancient Greece. Socrates, believed that only educated people on issues pertaining to the state should vote. To prevent demogoguery, a populist from ever sitting to power which might one day crown himself a king. And for that he was sentence to death.

The same problem plagued the Roman Republic, thier fix was the patron system. Where the upper classes of society offers protection and security to the common people in terms of money, food and legal help on which they become clients. Their downfall brought forth by internal family struggles between the upper classes which by default included their clients.

The American Republic also tried to fix such things by intruducing the electoral system, which is currently being put into question.

At the end of the day, democracy and voting rights exist to prevent a single person holding to much power. The irony is, it is now put to the people to the people to decide who will they give that power.

At the end of the day, voting should not become a right but a skill to see through those incompetent populist.

It should be remembered that Socrates died for his idea, that an uneducated voter invites incompetent politicians which ultimately leads to curruption and eventually invites a dictator.

Consider this - most of the men that fought in the civil war couldn't vote.

Who should allow to #VOTE in a democratic country like India?

The landowner part should still be in place, if you dont own a piece of this country why should you have a say in how the land is governed... this is why the metro area of each state or about 5% of the land is blue and keeps winning elections.

Too many people that dont contribute and dont have skin in the game have the right to vote, and this shouldnt be like this.

I know this is all true

Perhaps that literacy test was originally intended to quell the minority vote...

However if the knowing the answers to such questions (like ones presented in the video) were required today, I'd support that idea.

In this modern age of information, where (almost) all of human knowledge is available in the palm of your hand, we have little excuse for not knowing such things.

Requiring such knowledge would help people in being better informed voters

As it stands, a majority of voters are under or misinformed, receiving most of their information from corporate media outlets, social media or (believe it or not) entertainers.

Implementing such a system would (essentially) force people to educate themselves to better understand the government and what each candidate is actually about, making the general public less easily manipulated by lofty or divisive political rhetoric.

An informed and educated citizenry is a powerful citizenry and one any government or it's political players have trouble coercing or wresting anything from.

Knowledge is power.

Voter ID laws amount to nothing less than a poll tax, and I still can't believe everyone went along with disenfranchising those living in poverty. I once had someone take issue with me, saying that a voter ID is free. I had to remind him that it costs money to acquire the documentation that one needs to have, in order to get a voter ID, and it still amounts to the poor being stripped of their right to vote, just because they are poor.
