Vienna. Just to give you an impression what we germans have to deal with when coming to Vienna. In a youth hostel, we woke up to this being said through a loudspeaker: "Gudd mo-aning, idds aid a glogg now, se yoos-hoshdl wui glose ed nine-a" We germans fell out of our beds for laughter, being sure no english speaking person would understand that.

5:12 - no, that's not the suebian dialect. That's just how suebians pronounce Hochdeutsch (high german, the german that you'll learn at school). When talking to a non-suebian, they are immediately changing to Hochdeutsch, which they are speaking so badly, that everybody thinks that this is the dialect. Suebian Hochdeutsch: Des isch e Äärdbäärmaarmelaad. Suebian dialect: Des isch e Breschtlingsgsälz. (This is strawberry jam)

There is a large population of German speakers in southern Brasil for over 200 years. They speak a dialect called Riograndenser Hunsrückisch which comes from the Rhineland area of Germany near Luxembourg.

11:15 A note: Although "Platzangst" is colloquially used incorrectly for Klaustrophobie (claustrophobia), in psychology it actually correctly refers to Agoraphobie (agoraphobia), the fear of public places or large spaces, i.e. rougly the opposite.

Funfact I am from Hannover, we have almost no dialect there (there is a small area in north Germany almost completely dialect free) and I was alone in Bavaria for a few months and the first person I talked with was a cap driver over phone. I did not understand anything and I almost started crying, cause I was afraid I wouldn't be able to communicate at all.
Btw the cap driver understood me quite well, it was just me 😂

Germanic and German is not the same thing. It a specific English langugae misstake to make. Maybe you only know English?

@alicelund147
@

I have something for you: Platzangst doesn't really mean claustrophobia - but agoraphobia. When people tried to infer the meaning from the parts making up the compound, they ever so slightly got it wrong. The German for "agora" is "Marktplatz", or short "Platz". "Platz" is both "space" and "place" in English, so people believed that "Platzangst" means "fear of being closed in/fear of running out of space". Nah, it really means "fear of large open places". That mistake is so popular, that even specialists will uphold it. I guess Mark Twain has a point.
