The Future of the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab | Cosmic Queries
Video Overview & Insights
Could there be life under the icy surface of Europa? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic Chuck Nice explore interplanetary missions, asteroid mining, and other exciting launches with the Director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Laurie Leshin.
Do you think there's life within our Solar System?
Learn about what the director of JPL gets to do and what goals she has for JPL projects in the future. We hear about plans to visit Jupiter’s moon Europa, to return a sample from Mars, explore an asteroid called Psyche, and a new Earth science project named SWOT: Surface Water and Ocean Topography.
What are the challenges for a mission to Europa? Could there be life there? Find out about plans for our first Europa mission and what makes this moon of Jupiter so special. Will fusion play a role in space travel? How is NASA already using nuclear energy in space? We talk about reusable spaceships and how to get a sample back from Mars.
My prediction is no rocket tech can ever be developed to get there in any acceptable timeframe
Will we soon mine near-Earth asteroids? With so many missions to the moon, what makes Artemis special? What are new promising technologies in space travel? Could we use a space laser to get through the ice on Europa? All that, plus hear about many exciting projects that you might not know about…

The guy asked about ion engines for interplanetary travel, and you guys answered about interstellar travel with no mention to ion engines.

About StarTalk:
Science meets pop culture on StarTalk! Astrophysicist & Hayden Planetarium director Neil deGrasse Tyson, his comic co-hosts, guest celebrities & scientists discuss astronomy, physics, and everything else about life in the universe. Keep Looking Up!
The title of that moon is a joke They can't even stop from corrupting people over here on earth what makes you think they're gonna start a colony anywhere else You've got astronauts getting in fights in space you've got astronauts that want to commit suicide in space killing the rest of the crew in the process I mean who are you kidding You got Elon Musk a known bigot leading this and you think you're gonna make it past the second wall. You can't even get past your own prejudices you will not make it.

@JamesSmith-rj4ywThat was awesome, thanks guys!
@allanw9206Shes right, Arizona is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I want to move there when my daughter graduates. We were just in Phoenix this past summer, and went to Sedona and the Grand Canyon. IMHO Arizona is the prettiest state in the US, there is so much to see
@smmfdftbhNeil, when I drop into a random YouTube production like this one on JPL, can I be fairly confident you'll see my post within a few hours or days or am I deluding myself? I know you're busy but I think you owe us an answer. Because I think I have an important cosmic query worth considering. I'm swimming in bedbugs after multiple infestations lasting years. And I betcha bedbugs are the one contaminant the Space Shuttle never wants to see but may have to deal with because they are literally taking over on this planet SINCE DDT WAS BANNED — YOU CAN'T STOP THEM. PERIOD! Do you know if they've ever showed up on any vehicle yet like the Space shuttle? And would you tell us or keep it a secret? Don't forget I think you work for us, dontchu????? THANK YOU!
@bozodeniroLightning round is now renamed ... The snail paced segment.
@OuterSpaceDogsAre we, the human beings , sending another type of Voyager type of modern Giant satellite?????????
@OuterSpaceDogsOne of the original experts is astrophysics. And lots of hanky pinky when associates find themselves on the same environment that entertains us all.
@wavemaker54The question i have is, why is our moon the only one we havent named? Its just the moon, just another moon! Deapite the fact its currently the most important moon to us.
@TheSarjDamn Neil rizzed up Laurie and got her phone number
@HaveSomeSaltI think life can develop almost anywhere. Kind of like rust on iron. Whether it has a sulfur diet or needs sunlight to live in and so on and so on doesn't really matter. If there is some kind of energy there like tides and mineral mixing I think some kind of life could form there. Then of course, if it could form some kind of slimy algae, something could evolve to eat it, and so on and so on.
@larscarter7406The future of propulsion does not lie with jet engines, but with the directed, focused distortion of space time itself.
@DoomGoy88Let's wait for pictures of some European lobsters
@hans6929My father in law،Dr John Orono was in charge of developing of nuclear rockets at Los Alamos lab۔Prof.Dr.Nasir Fazal Cambridge USA
@nasirfazal5440Is this a trick question? Didn’t you see the movie? Or was it faked like the moon landing?
@Mom_sBasementImagine if these topics were available to the mass public to study, what we could accomplish. Instead it’s locked behind a debt that doesn’t go away even if you apply for bankruptcy
@dylanbrown7664What bull ! 😂🤣😂
@geoffbirchall7552I loved her what a sweet yet brilliant lady 💗 inspiring us all to be polite and maintain human decency even after possessing knowledge.
@KeyurRohitI'm so greatful for this channel! ❤
@mathew00There is water there, so maybe they say follow the water right
@fleabaglaneChuck and Neil, I am now retired from Lockheed Martin and spend far too much time watching StarTalk on my TV and computer. Buttering you up first - you guys are the most enjoyable and educational of all the programs I watch. I am not alone. Many of my family and extended family are addicted to you both. Neil, my cousin Mary in Baton Rouge gave me your book Starry Messenger for Christmas. YES! Outstanding. I wish I could afford to be one of your contributors, however - retirement has me on a budget for now. I do hope you will not block me from future comments after this. Chuck, please consider raising your camera about 5 inches back off from your camera about 6 to 7 inches. Your handsome face is very pleasant, however, putting your posture in the same format/proportion as Neil and most of your guests, would be greatly appreciated. I will be a fan forever, even if you don't implement my suggestion. Very Respectfully, Mike Kler, Salem, Oregon.
@mjkler9109Excellent guest. Really appreciate her time.
@mocafrostImagination is more important than knowledge

A thought 💭🤷♂️
Chuck should take over this show when mr Tyson jumps on Elon Musks rocket to mars :p
@Krystallen15:19 Avengers vibes
@alboogaThis idea of finding life on other planet is just too far in the future, Humans better learn to take care of LIVING LIFE ON THIS PLANET EARTH THAT HAPPENNS TO BE A LIVING PLANET. "GEOSCIENCE" FIRST FOR ALL. WHY, BECAUSE IT WILL INCREASE THE BUDGETS AND BRAIN POWER AVAILABLE FOR FURTHER EXPLORATION OF OUTER SPACE.
@vinp6093I'm 100% certain there is life in the oceans of Europa & Encelidus. Also, I've solved the dark matter problem. Information has mass. Mass has gravity. Dark matter is all the knowledge and thoughts of every being in the universe. Neil, you can be my "plus one" at my Nobel acceptance speech. ✌
@TheMichaelBeck22:25 why would going faster be correlated with going more often? Isn't the the budget the upper limit, on how many missions you can fly?
@MusikCassette❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@Lykos_FegariAunt Laurie is so awesome!
@BennyLeshin
