On March 11, 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant was hit by a 45-foot tsunami. The sea wall was only 19 feet high. What followed was a Station Blackout, a desperate race against time, and the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

This is the hour-by-hour story of the engineering failure that shocked the world. From the moment the "SCRAM" protocol initiated to the desperate "suicide mission" to vent hydrogen gas manually, we break down exactly what went wrong inside the reactors.

This should be called The MISINFOgraphics Show considering the amount of exaggerated bullshit hyperbole they inject into the narrative.

The batteries had 8 hours of life. The engineers had zero margin for error. Don't miss this epic true story of one of the worst disasters in history unfolding hour by hour.

This sounds like it was so much worse than Chernobyl even though it wasn’t

This is one of the best explanations of Fukushima I've seen. Clear, engaging, and easy to follow. Keep up the amazing work!

Amazes me how ignorant people are. Amazes me even more when someone trying to act intelligent, such as this channel, explaining something completely incorrectly.

20k people died from that Earthquake/Tsunami... NO ONE died from radiation. No one. Zero.

Wake up people. Learn to learn. Stop being ignorant. You too infographics.

"a brilliant design to run without electricity, as long as there is battery power."
just think about that one

The thumbnail resembles a kurzgesagt thumbnail, the animation resembles SCP Explained, ain't it?

@andrydia2849
@

I like the video but the animations at points are just plain wrong. Like when you say “The water level in the core is lowering” but you show the water level lowering in the fuel pools instead.

Kinda tasteless to describe such a horrible disaster with a cheerful tone, and the transition to the sponsor segment felt disresepetful.

And you should've named at least some of the volunteers who were willing to go towards the dangerous areas in hopes of saving others, like the two guys that tried to open the stuck valve.

Disasters isn't an appropriate subject for entertainment (except maybe some dark comedy), but for education.

The Fukushima and Chernobyl techs who volunteered to help intervene are among the bravest people ever.

@bobbituka123

This is what happens when you don't hire technicians on site 24/7 - no one to fix jack just when its was needed the most.

Liar there was never a deadly level of radiation outside of unit 1!!!!

Had it JUST been the earthquake, this could have been still really bad but contained...
but the Tsunami essentially turned the entire situation into a Hopeless "Delay as long as possible" situation.

Some HAD to kniw there was nothing else they COULD do but delay. For NOTHING yet built has ever bewn able to withstand when Natures essetially delivers a full strength punch right to your "Disaster-proof" monuments and reminds you: Theres NO hope when she decides to make your day a literal hell.

Wow that thumbnail is ripping off Kurzgesagt so hard.

what in the Kurzgezagt rip off.... 😮

@madhav766
@

They messed up with the safty designs...
They needed 2 more aspects. A 30-50 HP generator on the top left side of the floor protected by steel at a 45 dagree angle to divert any explosions, this would suck in sea water as a last resort, ALSO 2nd roof venting that could be manuly opened if no power.
Install this for all 4 buildings and all of this could of been avoided. Have backups of your backups that can handle anything.. even a hydrogen bomb

On one hand there is Fukushima who sacrificed himself to save people
On the other we there was that bastard Dytlov who killed 100 thousands of people and still have the audacity to say he was in toilet🤡🤡, i hope that bastard rott in hell

"The Fukushima nuclear accident resulted in one confirmed death from radiation-related lung cancer, while over 2,200 deaths were attributed to evacuation and related stress. Most studies indicate that there were no immediate fatalities from acute radiation exposure, but potential long-term cancer risks remain uncertain."
So, in basic terms: The "disaster" itself caused a SINGLE death. Peoples FEAR of radiation, because of left wing alarmists, caused 2200 deaths?
Well... I am honestly not surprised.

@timholstpetersen79

did anyone click on this thinking it was kurzgesagt?

@therealzakhar

I recently learned that a vast amount of the Japanese people see this event as a great shame upon their people and country when that couldn’t be farther from the truth at least from the American perspective. They fought mother nature with every ounce of will they had and sacrificed greatly at no fault of their own and prevented one of the largest nuclear disasters of all time. They should be greatly honored by how hard they fought for each other. Every bit of their efforts should always be commended!

@HalesBeIIs
@

If only they could have known that Japan has earthquakes or if we could have known that the country that invented the term "tsunami" might have a tsunami.

Hopefully we don't have a nuclear reactor in the US that explodes if anyone plays Freebird, or a cheeseburger gets to close.

Seriously?

Nuclear plants should consider Murphy's law a little more.

@rudyvigil6928

You’d think after enough of these things failing so detrimentally that they’d try to find a new renewable energy source but what do I know right🤣
