Whoever coined it “Nato Phonetic Alphabet” didn’t know the meaning of phonetic. If you’re gonna give something a particular name, would be a good idea to first understand the definition of said word. It’s a spelling alphabet! Simple as that! NATO Spelling alphabet. 🤪💪

I'm working at the reception of a campsite. We have guests from all over Europe. Our gate works with plate number recognition. I got tired of misunderstaning what letters people were saying, so i picked up the Nato alphabet and read their license plates back to them this way. Not a single car couldn't enter the site anymore due to a misspelling since then.

Once you gave the full alphabet, I was thinking "hmm, Lima is the only one I might have a problem remembering". Then you busted out the "LIMA-sine", it made me laugh, now I can safely say I will NEVER forget L is for Lima-sine! 😂

Whisky is really a bad choice, since it’s originally a misspelling like all other words starting with «wh», the h was both pronounced and spelled first. Wigwam would be a better choice.

Also, I always say indigo instead of India, because I’m developmentally delayed-tarded

My work uses the phonetic alphabet for shipping weights. Out shipping guy scans things after they are packed and all you hear is “zulu, zulu, victor, uniform” and each word is connected to a weight. so like Zulu is 700g, victor 600g, etc. learned a good chunk of it from just hearing that robotic voice saying them all day😂

I wonder if any wise guys have tried typing an entire school report in NATO phonetics to pad out the word count?

My uncle was a squaddie. I learned all the phonetic, marching, shooting, basic soldiering by 13... I never even wanted to join the cadets, but he basically put me through his version of it instead.

License plates are a fantastic way to learn as well. When you're out and about, take notice of the cars you pass by and try to match the letters to the words. Like learning a new language, repetition and everyday usage is a great way to memorize. I taught myself the whole phonetic alphabet through my embarrassing amount of Uber eats orders during Uni lol.

The NATO alphabet should be taught to every school kid.

@burntsider8457

The other method that works [well, did for me at any rate] is to sit down w pen and paper and write them over and over and over until they became ingrained. Now I can rattle off NATO code w/o a second thought. Oh, and it should be noted that, in addition to "M" and "N" being easily confused, the letter "S" often cannot be heard at all over the phone when spoken by itself.

@momcat2223

You said ZED as a maritimer now in Texas I loved to hear that!!!! Outstanding educational content!!!

@WanderingMum

the short stories are more complicated than just memorizing the actual letters.

Minor nitpick, but "Quebec" is pronounced "Keh-beck", not "Kweh-beck". The numerals ("wun", "too", "tree", "fower", "fife", "sicks", "seven", "ate", "niner", "zeerow") would have been a nice addition.
