The DEATH of Disney Channel

Video Overview & Insights

Once a household name throughout the 2000s, the Disney Channel is a shell of its former self with it being shutdown across the world due to its poor ratings. There are a lot of reasons for this, some of them obvious, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Disney has Miraculous which i love

I know this video is a year old. But people are now starting to wake up at how horrible streaming is. When it started as a cheap, affordable way to watch shows & movies has now become pretty expensive. Netflix is now $25 a month, Disney + & Hulu are $40 a month & so on. So now with the rise of everything, people are asking what now. Should people go back to analog like what the rising trends on Tiktok & Instagram suggests? Or should they say good bye to streaming altogether & switch back to cable or satellite to get their media fix?

Because with people living in the U.S. is spending hundreds of dollars a month just on subscriptions, people are itching for that feeling of ownership along with that sweet nostalgic feeling of being able to flip through channels to find something to watch. Cable, what used to be an expensive option for many folks are now seem doable if many people are already spending the hundreds on streaming services. A $100-$130 a month for a package of 120-170 channels might seem a good deal. Also satellite like Direct TV is promoting a comeback. Consumers are starting to choose what is the best decision for their wallets & it possibly spell disaster or the end for the streaming industry.

What thing that was wrong with my tv channels I didn’t actually have access to Disney unless it was summer same with nick and Cartoon Network. So I had to watch Disney Xd and watch some weird shows. Did you know of player select where they show clips of shows why they play games through most likely for legal reasons where mostly indie games. That where I learned of Celeste, Hollow knight, Cuphead, only up. It was weird.

A big part of this is also the fact that shows were no longer good, I don’t know what came before, shows losing quality or kids addiction to social media such as YouTube. Back in our day we did not have an option but the shows/films were actually really good. At the same time if you see what kids watch on YouTube it’s absolutely unbearable, one of the worst things I’ve seen in my life and still cannot understand why it appeals to them. Not to mention that is absolutely damaging.

Jake Paul needs to be banned from everything and isn't a good role model.

Their last good original sitcom was Austin & Ally that ended in 2016. Afterwards they just relied on reboots like Bunk'd and Raven's Home. It was never the same after.

im going to sound honest as a 28 year old, i'd say disney channel's peak was actually in the early 2000s. 2001-2008 were the primetime years cause you had that's so raven, lizzie mcguire, kim possible, even stevens, the proud family, etc., i stopped watching the channel around mid 2009 when i started 6th grade. so yeah this is an unpopular opinion, but i think 2009-10 was the downfall of the channel and it has been falling since then.

As a former Disney Channels viewer, I can safely say Disney Channel died away because of one reason; it resented its’ own audience. Nowadays you don’t see any more sitcoms or at least sitcoms with clever writing or tolerable jokes. Disney Channel Original Movies became more something to capitalize off than something people would actually enjoy, and the Descendants and Zombies movies specifically become more catered to younger and younger kids and name-brand recognition than actual teenagers. It seems that Disney at this point had no idea how to appeal to their target audience, or even who their target audience was, instead resorting to extreme capitalism and name-brand recognition. They can’t even make a more interesting premise than freaking Primos.

And to prove how they resent their audience, take a look at their animated track record. Phineas and Ferb, Gravity Falls, and Ducktales all ended as spectacular animated phenomena. Amphibia and the Owl House were also fantastic, with the Owl House being my all time favorite cartoon. But apparently the Owl House “didn’t fit the Disney brand” so they shut it down swiftly, ostracizing not just a major part of their own audience, but the show’s freaking creator. And then we had The Ghost and Molly McGee and Hailey’s On It, more lighthearted Disney-brand shows that—while gaining some fair repute—didn’t last quite as long or had that much engagement. In the end all that was left was Big City Greens, which was also a great show with a lot of awesome jokes, but over time started regressing into a mass of less engaging jokes and more stereotypical characters with almost no nuance to it.

And all that was left also. . .was Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir. While we could all pile on its’ horrific writing decisions, the show was just asking to die, dragging on for 5 seasons with its’ plot it attempts to make sense going absolutely nowhere and engagement starting to fail with characters becoming less likable and the show just becoming less tolerable. We could make fun of how badly it butchered its’ only likeable character Cat Noir but it’s honestly tragic to see a show this mishandled, the creator attempting to expand it into a cinematic universe only for it to be left abandoned by even its’ most loyal fans. Left as a representation of Disney itself, ostracized its’ own audience through its’ vanity only to be left as a shadow of what should’ve been.

Another thing about disney shows that I’ve noticed is that they either cancel shows right before the finale, or absolutely fail at making good ones.

I remember when I said that Disney Channel isn't dead... Welp, I was wrong. One of the main reasons why Disney channel died, is because of the lack of stardom. 2009 was their most successful year because of Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers. They had movies, shows, tours, album's and so much more. Nowadays, no one even remembers the name of the main star at all. You barely hear anything about the newer sitcoms. There's no interview, no pop culture, no songs, NOTHING. It's just... There. That's why Hannah Montana was Disney's most successful show of all time. Because it perfected the formula.

So, yeah... R.I.P Disney Channel.

The only show I see really airing like that on Disney channel is miraculous (a personal favorite) but I think the show might fall off bc the creators confirmed like 10 more seasons of this crap and the show is kinda their cash grab

Even as a kid I hated Disney channel due to them getting rid of all of their cool animated shows in favor of bland sitcoms, (and yes, that includes even the popular sitcom shows when I say that)

I was around during the transition from Toon Disney to Disney XD. If I remember correctly, there was even a countdown.

it died in 1995. i was born in 84, watched it in 86 as a 2 year old with very fond memories: dumbo's circus, pooh corner, donald duck presents, etc etc... heck even the raccoons. i literally grew on that stuff!!! there was wonderful world of disney with von drake and a bunch of awesome cartoons in the mix. for the most part, it was a lot of repackaged 30s-50s toons, but it was certainly new for kids who were born in the era. around 95 is when we got our first exposure to the type of live action that would eventually become all the cringe programming.. starting with *Flash Forward*.. that was the beginning of the major downfall. if you look at the disney productions wiki, you'll see that it's literally nothing BUT these kinds of shows from 95 - present. wasn't much of a fan of phin and ferb, i know a lot of folks like it.. it was tolerable, there were some shows that were sprinkled here and there that were nice, but once calArts cancer hit the scene, it was truly truly over -_-

To be honest, even in the 90s-early 2000s, Disney Channel was always a distant third behind Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Other then Kim Possible and Lilo and Stitch Disney Channel had nothing to offer and whenever im at my aunt's place, I would mainly watch Toon Disney which has a much better line up with Disney in the Afternoon re-runs like Ducktales, Rescue Rangers and Talespin.

@brendanbleecker9639

If cartoon network and nickelodeon is dead why not disney channel as well?

@angelaparente4470

Even though Quite On Set was centered on Nickelodeon, that documentary was made for Disney Channel. Now add the fact that Demi Lovato came out with her own documentary on the trauma of child stars. This led Disney Channel to finally make some changes on the network

One notable event was when Disney decided to broadcast E3 2018 live on their channel "Disney XD".
(This was when the channel was trying to appeal to young teenage "gamers") They got about halfway through the presentation with no issues until Gears of War Tactics was revealed, and they cut the broadcast out right after the trailer showed an enemy's head exploding from a sniper shot. After that the presentation kept cutting back in for a few seconds before back out for several minutes because Disney was too scared to show anything else on the show for more than a few seconds. It was a total disaster and the nail in the coffin for their whole "gamer appeal" phase
