The Day the Music Died: How Spotify's Algorithm is Killing Culture
Video Overview & Insights
Spotify’s algorithm didn’t just change how we discover music... it paved the way for AI to start making it, replacing human creativity with frictionless, placeless sound. This video uncovers how automation is rewriting music itself, and what we lose when art stops being human. In it, I also sit down with the University of British Columbia's Blank Vinyl Project to talk about the future of music in the age of AI.
To tie this into your recent wired headphones video, I think what would would help is cheap live music. I know this is difficult on venues and artists but as someone who would love to see more live music, but is low income, the barrier to entry is so high that listening solo is my default. However, if a venue near me offered different music genres every day of the week, for $5 entry, I would absolutely come down multiple times a week.
On the streaming services’ end, I would love to see a simple toggle for allowing or filtering out music made with AI. I don’t think the impact would be as strong as the companies think, but the user base would be happier and the cultural shift towards human made art appreciation would return.

This was incredibly well done. There is irony in the algorithm not spreading it to others

So amazing Ansel! Love what you said about the placeless-ness and flattening of music with automation (</3). Great to chat with you

Agree about the community spaces. I can imagine in the future some humans may start to be physically joined to AI via implants
