The Dark Souls Player Devoured by the Game

Video Overview & Insights

In the fall of 2015, a player reported an anomaly in Dark Souls that's never been seen before or since. This is an investigation of what that player found hiding inside the game, and what it might mean.

This is fucking modern art.

How Dark Souls tracks choices 4:48

The first bell: 7:15

The player failed his journey and died along the way. Right about where the last video ended. Everything was partially done and out of place because in his last moments before death, he was reliving the journey, tracking a mind believing it was real, yet shutting down as it died piece by piece. The black mass that kept appearing and getting closer was a representation of another part of the mind being devoured by the darkness, and the missing parts of the world are the parts of the mind that had shut down already.

In those final moments, he was reliving his greatest journey, As best he could in a mind that was shutting down until at last, the final bit of consciousness was snuffed out.

Anor Londo is wrong: 32:25

Dark souls but the player has a psychosis and the mental desintigration keeps getting stronger...

The world is disappearing: 43:56

Ghosts in New Londo: 47:05

I have an autistic pleasure for secret or unfound things and also things being mysteriously altered specifically in OG demon souls and dark souls 1 it really tickles my brain for some reason

Firelink is gone: 51:12

Return to the asylum: 52:38

I still dont know what was wrong with the world after watching the video but overall good video and ominous seeing DS1 break and the small time seeing whatever that thing making the clicking snapping noises

Return to Ash Lake, ending: 54:29

Analysis and interpretation: 56:17

This is a really interesting and creepy mod! Looks like what someone would see if they had a nightmare about Dark Souls.

I like how this isnt just a arg taking place in dark souls 1, instead actually playing a lot with dark souls lore.
The idea of the haunted cursed copy being a third ending, where instead of choosing between continuing the age of fire or letting it fade, something in the world makes the choice before you, with seath at the end having the head of a primeavel serpent like kaathe and frampt, suggesting the existance of a third serpent like mentioned halfway through the video, and it guiding this “something” off-screen, into creating a new ending, of turning the world back into the age of the ancients, with no light and no cold, no fire and no dark, no black and no white, just gray.
Throught the video, we slowly watch as the world falls apart and crumbles in on itself, much like what happens in dark souls 3, when the fire is about to fade, we are witnessing in real time the effect of the age fire fading, the bonfires and all sources of fire going off, all enemies other than dragons disappear, we are returning to the age of the ancients, where there is no disparity. im not sure if the steps taken to create this third ending were all made before the playthrough, or if it was still being done while it was being played, but i think we can probably guess some of the steps that would be needed be necessary to achive that ending by examining the world, for one, Gwynevere’s illusion 100% needs to be dispelled, maybe that is done to symbolically remove the control of the Gods of Anor Londo from this version of dark souls world, plunging it into darkness, but curiously, the 4 kings are still alive, infact, whatever thing is responsible for doing this to the game seemed VERY intent on stopping the player from killing the 4 kings, its the only time it attacks the player instead of just watching them, so the darkness and the abyss should still be spreading, maybe that’s why seath at the end is entirely black, maybe the age of dark has something to do with it?
Either way i loved the video and how well made it was

I think this is an alternate timeline where Aldritch got to Seath first and began using his knowledge to consume the other Gods. The shapeless black mass resembles him more.

I'm really glad I decided to give into my curiosity today and click on a video that YouTube recommended to me (presumably because one of the channels I watch frequently does challenge runs primarily in FromSoft games). I'm only halfway through but I'm commenting now so I don't forget and because I wanted to say how much I appreciate that you created this video in such a way that someone who isn't a huge dark souls fan could enjoy. I am somewhat familiar with the game itself from seeing challenge runs, but you laid a lot of important foundations throughout the video and provided enough context that I didn't have to have played DS myself at all to appreciate what was going on. plus, the voice over was pleasant to listen to and engaging without being overblown or overly dramatic. I especially appreciated the moments when you would add in your own footage to show what typically happens and when you would explain the game design bits. :D

Him stopping on the rafter after the first silver knight arrow made me so angry. No one who's beaten dark souls 4 times would EVER stop to see where the arrow came from.

thing for me is that, im so familiared with Dark Souls 1, because this game has been so broken and analysed by data mining and challange runs, i can see how you can manipulate and mod the game to get this footage.
i feel like this would have hit a lot better during the golden age of creepypastas

The fact that the "original channel" isn't linked in the description of a post hbomberguys plagiarism essay, video is the immediate evidence that it was made by this guy. And it is NOT a bad thing I just don't get the video strategy of making a cool story and then pretending it's someone else's so that you talking over and explaining it doesn't seem like lazy storytelling
