As someone who grew up eastern orthodox i never understood the craze over catholic imagery but yk what pop off
Catholics: they serve looks and they serve God. In this video I explore the definition of camp and how it crosses over with Catholicism - more than you might expect. Happy Easter 🐣🐇

0:16 What is Camp™?
Grew up Catholic (now none religious) and I always love seeing the outsider perspective on the whole thing. Like, so much correct, so much just slightly off and sort of mystified by this weird, old religion that gave birth to most of Western Christianity. It's like when kids visit their grand parents and are baffled that yes, they are in fact related to these people with dusty shelves full of baroque nick-nacks and odd ideas about how the world functions.
13:00 Why is Catholicism…like that?
22:54 Catholic Opulence 💅 & Camptholicism?
If it's not cannibalism because he's alive, it's vore instead.

I was raised Catholic now I tell people I'm non practicing agnostic. But the most Catholic headache I ever had was when I was still active duty United States air force when I was assigned 2 the chapel at Whitman AFB Missoura I had 2 get the Catholic priest ordained 2 wed in Kansas through the arch diaces of East st Louis Illinois. It took over a week

Protestant: "Yeah, in our faith women can be priests....but hopefully they will not have that inclination, since they're not really 'capable' of being real priestly!". Catholic "In our faith - women cannot be priests, of course! They're not 'Holy' enough": Conclusion: Regardless of their mismatch - they both agree, really, on that women are not 'Holy' enough to be "real" priests. At least in practice, although their public 'theory/theories' around this Q may differ (At least so in Europe...don't know about the US though.).
And yeah - I know that what I just wrote is nonsense...Kind of just wanted to write it! ;-)

IDK anything with Niecey Nash in it is kinda camp by default. She's fabulously camp at all times and I think sometimes people miss it because of a lack of education on Black artistry. She does EVERYTHING with a wink and a nod. So while it may not be naive, "pure" camp, it's still camp.
Kim Kardashian is just embarrassing tho.

Apparently some of the Resident Evil games are considered camp 🤔

I'm Sicilian, in my 60's, and attended Catholic school from 1965-'69. I got suspended, in 2nd grade, for disruption during Mass, by eating rock candy and crunching loudly, and bothering the girl in the pew in front of me. I got plenty of nun whippings for my behavior, and I guess I got revenge one summer day. I walked into the church, took a lit votive candle, and lit the confessional curtains on fire. As I ran from the church, the loudest siren ever went off. I was so scared, I hid in a ditch for several hours. It was a few weeks later when I discovered that the siren was just the noon whistle, and not the finger of of God exposing me.
@angelo8424NOW i know why i have so many catholic/religious ocs (((((and why im SO OBSESSED WITH CONCLAVE 2024 AND THE REAL CONCLAVE)))))
@misspeachjellyI've been watching you on Nebula. Just wanted to say I'm really happy to have found your work. I love your analyses, perfect for my lonely dinners <3
@lauramariamusicI love love love this!!!! So good!
@KatelynBrown-e5oVatican II was the council where the Magisterium of the Catholic Church decided that Catholics who die by suicide can have funeral Masses in Catholic churches and be laid to rest in Catholic cemeteries. Prior to that council, Catholics who died by suicide were denied all of those things in death because the Catholic Church insisted that those people went to hell and it didn't really matter why they took their own lives. At Vatican II, with the rising awareness of mental illness in society at large, the council determined that this was incorrect and that if someone takes their own life, it's probably more accurate to assume that after death, they're given an opportunity by God to repent of that sin. My favorite little-known Vatican II fact, because as a suicidal teenager in Catholic high school I was horrified to learn this 🧡
@kodiecummings2793What an incredible video!! I have a very strong interest in religious iconography and ritual but do not stand with the church (or any church).
I saw a comment of yours saying that you got to see the band Ghost!! I’m a HUGE ghost fan and i wonder how many other ghesties enjoyed this video :)
hiii catholic here!! Pope francis actually took a vow of austerity, which is very common in latinoamerican catholic churches (he was argetinian) so that’s why he dressed so modest, he also didn’t had a paycheck (wich all popes had) because he had this vow. He embraced latinoamerican catholicism :3
@felixcarrascoaranguiz26:37 that is blasphemous nobody prays to saints nobody said that "praying to him Healed them".
@gregoryjones7712If you ignore the fact that pope Francis before dying referred to gay people using the italian equivalent of the f-slur used in the English language. Better doesn't always mean good.
@nikitatavernitilitvynovaOkay so I knew absolutely nothing about camp until I heard it this year. Not surprising as I'm not native English. But the definition that I made of it is something camp is when you do something or dress in a way that is knowingly bad or trash or shitty but you're aware of it and even like it. An example would be if you're going all out with the I'm a bride to be at your bachelorette party with all sorts of gadgets and accessories knowing it's stupid and ridiculous but you don't take it seriously. You do it because you like the cringe. A camp song or tv show is something that is willingly bad and stupid but is also self aware of the matter. It is not created to be taken seriously but quite the opposite.
@nikitatavernitilitvynova67th videooooo 🤪🤪🤪
@jeeroylenkins6625I love the video, but Leo was not the first American Pope, cuz America is NOT a country and Francisco I was the first American Pope, from Argentina. Stope saying America to refer to the USA, please 😭
@nPc2730Catholicism is the Tibetan Buddhism of Christianity
@Roman-NotRamenOh now..u certainly have seen the Vatacian fashion show in Fellini's Roma...right ..?
@wandrinsonofHekateActually gay is ok in the Church today ..the not being baptized .oh baby that's an issue....
@wandrinsonofHekateOrthodox is Byzantine .. Catholicism is Roman...it's a differation with a difference..oh and prodestants is more Northern Europe...and Anglacans are more English...now u want to talk American?..oh baby..
Btw...purgatory really isn't a thing anymore .or was that limbo...whatevs I'm a unrepentant neopagan anymore....
I would say camp actually is the child of farce ..therefore Moliere and those who originated the art predate the annintatied date given by whomever .
@wandrinsonofHekateThe gays don't own camp...we just speak it fluently .. mostly...
@wandrinsonofHekateRead you? Ok... your accent, especially when you pronounce the p in camp is high camp...oh baby.....
@wandrinsonofHekatea whole video about how camp catholicism is, and the ball fondling chair wasnt even mentioned once.
@gweesadAll this Catholicism attention makes want to convert. Lol
@EDKsurlyIf you didn't mention the Andalusian brotherhoods or Saint Sebastian, then I'm afraid you left out half of the intersection between Catholicism, queerness, and camp
@Luisfour❤❤❤
@MsMinnieificationBeing a life long catholic who converted to lutheranism and also is trans, all I can say is - catholicism may be camp but traditional protestantism is goth,
Despite me being queer the campness of catholicism outright put me off, it feels like it just kills the depth of the spirituality, and I suppose that's the whole point of camp - it's unserious,
I feel too straight and protestant-backgrounded to wrap my head around all this, so I'll just say that I don't know if we can ALWAYS connect maximalism with camp- I get why it's done, it sometimes feel like all forms of restraint are in some way part of the whole "sit down and never rock the boat, live life the way you've been told and never stand out"-mood that's part of the hetero agenda, but I feel like always equating people acting out and going over the top with queerness is to extend that to like... every single businessman who called themselves an "innovator who moves fast and break things". Those guys are maximalist as hell, even if they're often so in really boring ways. I feel like one must be more discerning about it, is all.
@goranisacson2502If they wanted real rainbows they would have printed an actual light spectrum, not that.
@jaredgreen2363My introduction to camp and my only use for the term for a bit was referencing the 1997 film Batman & Robin.
@chairmanm3owAs a queer RE teacher working in a Catholic school I feel like you made this video for me - I will be showing parts of this in my RE debate club!
